LAST NIGHT’S FIRE ON DEVIL’S PEAK, TABLE MOUNTAIN
I got these pics in the middle of the night. Taken at 1am this morning by 2oceansvibe reader, Matt C.
For those of you who don’t know the ways of the mountain, Devil’s Peak is the peak on the left of Table Mountain, just above the Tampon Towers.

Devil’s Peak, above the Tampon Towers
Without flames
The peak obviously peels round hospital bend to UCT, which is apparently where last night’s fire started and then “the wind whipped it around the bend.”
Anyway, no more time wastage, let’s check out the shots.

Beautiful, yet dangerous
Raising the question : Fire, friend or foe?

Raging!

Mental!
Jeez, pretty serious stuff.
I chatted to The TBG this morning who tells me The Dude arrived home *pissed* at 1am and woke up the whole house, telling them to go outside and watch the fire. They thought he was kidding and, after 10 minutes, found themselves driving to signal hill for a good view. Our very own little “storm chasers.” Or “fire chasers,” as it were..
Cops had cordoned off the mountain because there were so many people there. At 1 in the morning! This is clearly only possible if you’ve made work a sideline and you’re living the holiday.
Another PERFECT example why I never have meetings before 11am and after 2pm (and never on Mondays or Fridays) – because you never know what might happen the night before..
More from the “traditional media” here.
More pics (from Coda) here.
And another radical one showing how close it came to homes here.
Helicopters still dropping water on the flames this morning – click here.

a moment of silence for all the little four legged and winged creatures who do not make it to safety.

That is the first thing I thought about as well. Went the weekend on a bike ride through Jonkershoek. All that was living was black crows sitting on the black trees.

I received a phone call 12h30 from my son last night, he and his band OVERTONE were just about to be evacuated from their Guesthouse as a result of the fire… hectic…
Panic stages, but they are all fine……….. I dont think we all realise the effect of a fire like this…..

Great pics and you must have been one of the first bloggers to get pics up, Seth. I’ve just done a blog about how the traditional media on the Net were soooo left behind by the bloggers and Twitter on showing the drama of the fire. Check it out here:

I went up to Rhodes Memorial today, where the emergency crews were, and got a number of close ups of the action. I also managed to get some panoramas of the fire last night and this morning from my roof.
