WHITE MOWBRAY MAN GETS REFUGEE STATUS IN CANADA
White 31 year old, Brandon Huntley, has managed to get as far as he can from the Mowbray mean streets.
Canada were happy to take him on.
This, from the Ottawa Sun :
An Ottawa man has been granted refugee status after an immigration board panel ruled he would be likely be persecuted if he returned back to his native South Africa — because he is white.
A Canadian immigration and refugee board panel ruled Thursday that Brandon Huntley, 31, could stay in Canada because he presented “clear and convincing proof of the state’s inability or unwillingness to protect him.”
A white dog
Cute? Apparently not..
“I find that the claimant would stand out like a ‘sore thumb’ due to his colour in any part of the country,” tribunal panel chair William Davis said in his decision to grant Huntley refugee status.
It’s likely the first time a white South African has been granted refugee status in Canada claiming persecution from black South Africans, said Russell Kaplan, Huntley’s immigration lawyer.
“There’s a hatred of what we did to them and it’s all about the colour of your skin,” Huntley said of the violence wrought by black attackers on many white South Africans.
Huntley first came to Canada on a six-month work permit in 2004 to work as a carnival attendant. He returned home to South Africa and came back to work in Canada in 2005 for a year and stayed illegally for an additional year until he made a refugee claim in April 2008.
Growing up in Mowbray, a town near Cape Town, Huntley was attacked seven times — including three stabbings — by black South Africans during attempted robberies and muggings.
During these attacks, Huntley told the refugee board that he was called “a white dog” and “a settler ,” a reference to South Africa’s colonial past based on racial apartheid.
“If you have got the money, you can protect yourself,” Huntley said of the armed security guards wealthy white South Africans hire to protect themselves.
Huntley’s “subjective fear of persecution remained constant and consistent” up to the time he made his refugee claim, Davis noted in his decision on Huntley’s claim.
Wow – the first whitey to get refugee status in Canada – he’s gonna have a ball over there.
While I do feel sorry for Brandon Huntley and appreciate what he has apparently been through, I would like to know exactly where he lived and why he stayed in a place where he was attacked seven times. Maybe try a different route home? Or install some burglar bars?
A similar thing was happening to a friend of mine living in London.
He moved.
I spent a large portion of my life in the Southern Suburbs and, in particular, Mowbray. My mother’s office was in Mowbray, as well as my bank branch. I didn’t LIVE in the area and I’m aware that it’s not exactly Upper Newlands, but I had and still have a number of friends living there. I have never heard of any of them, nor any other white person I know living anywhere EVER being called a “white dog” or a “settler.”
And what do they mean by him standing out “like a sore thumb.” Is he implying that as a white person in South Africa you will be targeted, but not as a black person? Which part of Mowbray will everything come to a standstill if you walk through it as a white person?
I’m not saying he is LYING, I’m just saying that he is potentially a spice master and I’d love to hear the other side of the story. You know, just to find out a little more about the circumstances. That, and the burning question on everyone’s mind – does he have many friends? Black OR white?
I just find it interesting, that’s all..
What do YOU think? Do you reckon Brandon Huntley is a spice master?
[thanks holly]

The guys either a total master (at spin & spice) or else he’s a complete coward and fraudster. A charity case, circus act.
The fact that he sought asylum as opposed to any other way that requires effort with integrity, and GOT it…
just makes me so jealous!

The process is quite involved. Refugees need to provide documentary proof… it’s not simply an interview. The board would of have asked to see the SA police reports of the actual incidents. This guy probably had a good lawyer in the mix.
The government of Canada accepts refugees who fear cruel and unusual punishment, a risk to their life, or torture… so that’s pretty much 40 million other South Africans too.

True it is not a simple interview. Its long hours and months spend with a lawyer and various departments of imigration offices. Hours spent waiting not knowing if you will be able to stay in a country where you feel safe. Or to go back to a country where you have no future.
He came here on a work permit. He worked hard, in substandard living conditions often not being able to bathe for days, cramped quarters, poor ventilation. Working 12hr+ a day for less pay than the “canadians” working at the same job. He got injured on the job and the boss had him claim it was on “off” hours or loose his job. He worked injured…. He put up with much worse than most would endure. He has a valid work permit. And is one of the hardest most honest workers anyone could employ. He’s not “milking” the system. He’s not looking for a free ride. He is actually a very proud man, who will not ask for anything. He would rather suffer with no food or money than ask for a hand out and be seen as a burden. He spent an entire Canadian winter with no heat in his basement apartment. To the average Canadian the winters here are unbearable. Imagine now if your from SA! Never having experianced this kind of cold. He doesnt want people to view him as a fraudster, a chancer or a liar. He is none of that.
When you hear the passion in his voice when he speaks of SA, of the beautiful views, the fabulous weather, the ocean, the surf, the springboks, the Braiis, his friends and family. He is not a man who hates his country. He hates that nothing is being done to right the situation. What pains me is the sadness in his eyes when he tells you of innocent people having their land taken away, being murdered, raped, babies tortured left for dead, while the Gov. turns a blind eye. What man in their right man would want to have a life and raise a family in such uncertainty and fear?
I have seen his scars, I know of how they happened. Crime happens everywhere, but until I met Brandon, NO ONE I knew of had ever been stabbed or robbed at knife point. These are not normal everday happenings here. But they happen every day in SA? These are horrible acts of violence. Its in the papers, its on the news, the net. You can not deny that a lot of wrong is being done, One only has to open their eyes.
He tells me of seeing for the first time women out at night walking carefree, no fear. Of people stopping at stops signs no worries of being jacked. Of houses not having bars in every window. Of taking the bus and not being stabbed. Bus driver not behind bullet proof glass.
He tells me of how he was so amazed of all this when he first came here. “It’s just not normal back home”. I was shocked, my reasearch and his stories have now opened my eyes to things far worse than I imagined possible.
His judge was tough, his questions even tougher. His lawyer was good. But the evidence brought forth before the judge by Brandon, His lawyer and witnesses were more than enough to prove his point. He is happy he can now feel secure in making Canada his home. He may be the “first” but many others are in the exact same situation. He was just brave enough to stand up and say he had had enough. He has done a world of good for others experiencing the same.
Judgements are now being made based on a news article that has been written by an outside party as a story. Small quotes that can be made too look a certain way to get an up rise out of people. Did he have a hard time back home because of his color, yes that is true….If he was sent back home did he have good reason to fear being attacked not being employable and being a burden to his family, yes. He didn’t choose the easy way. Far from. It saddens me that some are so quick to judge and call him names. Childish I say, how can you who judge him without knowing anything about him or what he has been through. You have no idea the pain he has suffered. Brandon is a faboulous, interesting and intelligent man who is well spoken, funny, hard working, dependable and would give you the shirt of his back if you needed it. I am proud to call him my good friend.
(and to answer your question. yes, he has friends, Black,White,Indian,French,English and all of whome are proud to stand with him in his journey)

I’m with Seth on this one…pathetic really and dissapointing of the Canadian Government. I can just imagine what those in Rawanda must think! I think he has a long career in marketing ahead of him to help pay for his heating! As a white South African (who has just returned to SA after 6 and a half years in the UK) I have not once felt like I stick out like a sore thumb! Ok…I did go to Tiger Tiger a while back and felt slightly on the higher side of the average age! Sure, the government isn’t solving all the problems but they try…running away is not helping anyone, we need to stick it out and help solve the issues together and keep the government accountable so that the Vibe continues!
I have a feeling that it might be slightly tougher for white South Africans to get visas for Canada going forward…

Immigration and emigration are not new phenomena anywhere in the world. It has just become virtually impossible to do so going “into” what many would percieve as better circumstances, hence the lengths some are willing to go to. I haven’t the inclination, but it would seem that if I did, this would one of a very limited number of options open to me, despite being highly qualified.

Thanks for the comment Halle. It’s given us some insight into the man and he sounds like a great salt-of-the-earth type of guy… but there’s still a burning question which I would ask Brandon if I ever met him: why did he run to “greener pastures” rather than sticking around to try and improve things here in SA?
Before your knee-jerk reaction of saying “because he was a victim of violent crime”, I would like to clarify something. Most South Africans, myself included, have experienced robberies/hijackings at gun/knife point at some stage (perhaps not as frequently as Brandon but it’s terrifying nonetheless). Now this is clearly not acceptable but after it has happened each of those victims faces the question – do I run or do I try to assist in bringing about change?
South Africa finds itself in a crisis with regard to the crime situation but this can only be rectified if its people stick around and strive to improve it. There are countless people here who give of their time to promote education in poor areas, assist crime prevention by performing reservist duties, give generously of their resources to put underprivledged children through school, etc.; all of which will provide a brighter and safer future for all South Africans.
You may think that this article (or the people commenting on it) are having a direct jab at Brandon but it goes much deeper than that. We, the South Africans who remain in the country, just feel that there are question marks over all of our expats head’s who flee and then claim to “love” our country. If you love something then surely it’s worth fighting for?

I recently lived in Mowbray for 4 years. It was awesome. Sure there were “bergies” etc. but this is Cape Town we are talking about. I used to walk to my bank branch, draw money to pay my staff and walk home without batting an eyelid.
I also often went to the eateries (were I made a number of friends), bars (Champs pool bar etc.), local bottle store, pharmacy, charity shops and even the betting house off Main Road to play soccer 6, all of which were predominantly frequented by “non-whites” and I was never ever called names or felt like I was sticking out.
I understand this dude may be a “good guy” but in no way should he be getting political asylum from living in Mowbray. What a sham! Mowbray is like a rebelious teenager, it is a little rough around the edges, a little risque, but it has a warm and fuzzy heart.
This guy is spicier than a Sunrise Chip and Ranch triple chilli, triple cheese, triple chip roti. By the way its only R26 and is available on Main Road, Mowbray

Good on him. He made the effort and it does not sound like it was easy. I have not been (and hope never to be) a victim of violent crime and who’s to say I would not also bail if it happened to me.

There’s something very funny in him being able to pull the wool over an entire country’s eyes. Kinda like sneaking into a club when you’re under age, or when you’re wearing sneakers instead of shoes. In Cape Town, that’s what we call “skieting a kaard.” And Mr. Huntley, it would seem, is very adept at that. However, from a proudly South African perspective – good riddance! Our country is better off without people like him!

Interesting comment from Halle. We not doing the lobster pot here are we? My complex, of 8 units, has had 6 crime incidents this year. Surely that would make most people get out of dodge? Hmmm. I like warm watter but i hope i notice if it gets to hot.

Halle, thank you for your reply. It’s great to see ‘the other side’ of the story. However, I have to tell you that I am 27 years old, have lived in bad neighbourhoods to very classy neighbourhoods, yes, there is crime, but nowhere near what global news reporters are saying. I have had a few incidents of break-ins. That’s it. No muggings, no racial slander, no hijackings, I have an evenly balanced mix of black, white, coloured & indian friends.
I do sympathise with Brandon, and my argument is not with Brandon, I am glad he is in a happier place where he have a better life. My argument is with the Canadian government, that they can believe and approve of what he had to say without consulting the SA government. Or in fact asking one of us for that matter.
I have NEVR once felt like my life was threatened on a daily basis.
I think I just feel betrayed by the media who have really sensationalised what is really going on in this country. Yes, we have crime, we have issues, but nowhere near as big as the media claim.

This is about one thing, and one thing only.
Getting a visa.
If our expat friends are willing to marry someone in the vain hope of getting a visa, surely they’d tell a few tales (true or otherwise) about being a victim of crime?
This is absolute bull – no white person in this country is a VICTIM of the new democracy. Please!!

Agree with Justin.
Halle, your views on SA and the dire situation it is in is something we as passionate S.Africans hear and get defensive about very often. My blood begins to heat up when I hear a foreigner commenting on the country I live in as if they have a right because we are 3rd world (agh shame) as opposed to the 1st world powerhouses they come from. This is not a jibe at you Halle, but, like Justin said, the media have turned SA into a proverbial sess pool which embodies everyones deepest fears and social concerns – we have serious crime, petty crime, racism, reverse racism, xenophobia, poverty, high level corruption….yet the people who live here love the place – we are well travelled and still (the majority) come back and sing this countries praises…How can this be… I mean, what about THE CRIME???!!! There is a vibe here, a vibe which we are part of which is all about bettering this country and being a part of history. We are democratic, multi racial, proud, passionate and above all, HAPPY. We host millions of tourists year in, year out, the world cup is coming, many other major sport events have been and gone. Halle, I promise you, its really not that bad here!

I say “good for you, Brandon”.
The South African government blatantly discriminates against whites and no-one does anything about it. Brave men are needed to stand up and find alternatives. There is no point in running away but putting one’s head in the sand does not resolve the problem either! Moving to a better environment is not running away otherwise none of us black, white, coloured or Asian (how I hate our fixation on racial classification) would have landed up in South Africa in the first place!
Evil triumphs when good men do nothing!

And Grant you forget the power of the world media. A story like this can do a serious amount of damage to our tourism, foreign investment and ultimately our growth. When all our friend needed to do is follow the standard procedures that are in place, which are exercised by thousands of South Africans every year and immigrate. There is no case for refugee asylum in my opinion. For some one who loves our country so much its odd how he doesn’t see a problem in dragging our name through the media mud.

Ok,
So here I sit on the fence.. right… I guess I am an expat, 11yrs on the road missioning around the world.. now finally I’ve hung the back-pack up and making a life in Australia. (Already some of you have judged me).. But moving forward -
I grew up in the Ville (Durbanville) and feel like I am South African. I still got the accent (wat is nou in sy moer in) and
for the first time I feel like an outsider. You all jump on the band wagon of “Our country is better off without people like him!”
so like him and me.. or what?? Just coz we have chosen a life where we don’t have burglar bars or death everyday on the TV. I still back the BOKKE 100%, yet the way it sounds is you would prefer that those of us not in SA – should
not support the Boks coz ya’ll fighting for a better South Africa. We would stand up for SA alot more than you think – and yes it gets
a bad rep in the media; But without us patriotic Africans living abroad educating the rest of the world Nobody would ever know.
So next time you are at a game or knocking someone who’s left home – Think for one second, you are surrounded by your brothers
cheering as South Africans.. while WE are out numbered by the opposition in our Green jumpers singing the anthem passionately and cheering
as South Africans (alone) without the backing of 80million brothers
My bloed is groen en ek is BOK BEVOK…. Altyd!!!!

I have been living in Mowbray for 6 years – a little cottage off Raapenberg Road. During this period I was assaulted at least 6 times, ending up in Groote Schuur emergency unit on 2 occasions. It was only after the bitch threatened me with a knife that I said enough is enough. I dumped her ass and kicked her out about 10 months ago…things have been rosey ever since.

The comments of some of the readers are quite interesting. ” I lived in Mowbray and it was a wonderful place blah blah blah” Pull your head out of the sand. Living in South Africa you are ALWAYS one traffic light, or one car away from being murdered. Deal with it. If you havent been high jacked, had a family member raped, murdered, robbed, you are in the minority. I’m as positive as the next person. I spent alot of time in NZ last year and was very disheartened that so may South Africa, of all colours, have left our shores because of crime. But who the hell am I to critisize somebody for leaving because they were affected by crime.Just because this guy doesnt want to actually stick around until het gets murdered doesnt mean that you think he is wrong to get citizenship from another country. I love South Afric and will never leave. I was robbed at gun point with my family in my parents house in Bergvliet a month ago. Its not very nice to watch a guy put a gun to your mothers head and smile. Now, if I wanted to leave the country necause of that, I would’nt expect people to to critisize me for it. If people want to leave for “greener pastures” then good luck to them. Hopefully one day they will return with their kids, who may end up living here.

Craig,
I’m not sure I get your point pal. Brandon whinged to the Canadians and now he’s got asylum there… How is that helping our crime situation in SA? (Which I agree is blown out of proportion in the international press… but is still at very worrying levels)
It isn’t like he pursued his asylum under the banner of “improving the crime situation in SA”. The fact that it’s made it into the media may give some indirect assistance to the situation but it wasn’t his intention.
Get Real
01 Sep 2009
Its time to get real. We have some of the worst crime statistics in this country, and all the government does is write in new tobacco laws. For those of you who claim “stay here and help the people to improve the country”; well you frankly need a reality check. The only people who can really help the country are those running it. And those that do help out of themselves, are only being laughed at by our politicians, because those that help, are not the ones who voted for the politicians. And those that receive the help, well they DID vote for the politicians. See where this is going. I say, if you have an opportunity, then take it. Yes things are not that bad here, but they are bad enough and could only get worse!
On another note, why do you give a flying f* that this guy left for canada. Its his life and his decision. And then going forth and alienating him furhter from his country by these stupid comments is exactely what is wrong with whites in this country. We are always fighting amongst ourselves. If we can’t even hold together how will whites and blacks ever live together in the future. Get of your pedestals and get back in touch with reality please.

Show me ONE African country where whites & blacks get on “in harmony”. As soon as the going gets tough the “race card” is touted and the ANC are the masters of this (See Caster’s return and the “where are the whites” comments) Yes, I know it happens in other countries but not to the extent that it polarises the ANC’s “our people” from the “settlers”-(read into the “haves, have nots”, and the “I’m going to take”) – this is why SA has a unacceptable violent crime rate.
Just because its become ACCEPTABLE to put up with crime does not make it right!
Good luck to the heroes “toughing it out” but sometimes you you need to actually read & digest the writing on the wall! This is not only for your own benefit but for your kids as well!
Good luck to Brandon I say – and good luck to those left behind. Doors do not remain open for long!

I also know a large number of foreigners living in the Western Cape and Gauteng. They are choosing to live here and many of them have gone through painstaking immigration processes to do so.

There are a lot of cotton socks that need to be blessed – Halle, there are other routes he could have chosen to get a work permit either in Canada or elsewhere – he deserves every bit of ridicule he gets for seeking asylum status. Because by doing that he is saying all whites in south africa are persecuted. That is outrageous and deserves to be condemned.

I say good for him. Most are missing the point here. This is great news for our young democracy.
Let the world take note and keep a close eye on our government. Equal rights for everyone…not just those who happen to be in power. Affirmitive action is bull and cannot be accepted, education is the answer.
I love this country but worry what future my “white” children may have here. At least now I know that when the sh1t finally hits the fan I will have somewhere to go….not all of us were grew up with silver spoons in our mouths!

Well said PeacyP. I actually also know a Canadian, and she is currently living in Obz (next door to Mowbray). Like you said – the irony! Personally, I have no issues with people leaving. What I do have a problem with, is people leaving for “greener pastures” and when they get there bad-mouthing South Africa (but will be supporting the Boks on Saturday). The reason many (not all) Saffers living overseas criticise South Africa so much is to justify to themselves the decision they made.

I am as patriotic a South African as you’re likely to find, but unlike some of those commenting here, I am also a realist. Of course the international media spice up the SA situation at times, but there is no denying that it is one of the most violent places on earth. I double dare anyone to guarantee a foreigner’s safety during a visit to SA. While I always promote the country with enthusiasm and gusto, I am under no illusion as to how dire the situation actually is. When asked, I can’t lie. It’s a dangerous place! Beautiful. Incredible. Amazing. But fucking dangerous and life is cheap.
It’s not until you’ve lived in a city with relatively no crime that you realise the value of feeling secure, of not having to worry about your missus going out at night, or even of having to lock up your house or your car. Where a taxi driver will return a phone left in his cab. It’s not common, but it does still exist in places and it’s pretty fucking cool!
Brendan is no different to the thousands of Saffas in London that desperately try to stick it out for the 5 or 6 years to qualify for (refugee status?) permanent residency….’just in case things go tits up in SA’. Other than a few burglaries and car break-ins, I have fortunately not been exposed to serious crime, but I can only imagine that someone would get disillusioned after being repeatedly victimised.
To judge someone for deciding to do what he thinks is improving his lifestyle is stupid and ignorant. Sure he may have embellished a bit, but it had the desired effect and he’ll possibly be shovelling snow every winter because of it. At the same time, the chances that he’ll be man-raped and shot in the pip by a meth-head for a phone and R20, will also be exponentially diminished.
Some of us are not fortunate enough to have the luxury of a foreign passport or the means to obtaining an ancestral one, so if Julia Malema ever hooks up with Mark Thatcher and decides to stage a coup, I’ll be hauling ass over to Canada, thanks to my new mate, Brendan
I left SA several years ago after being offered a job in the UK, I have since lived in several countries and am on the brink of returning to what I call home, and not from some hovel in the South West of London, but rather from a Caribbean island where I am often referred to as whiteboy; and why not? I am after all white and packing meat and two veg.
I can also tell you I’m not coming home to ‘make a difference’. I’m coming home because I love the place. So while Nick is spending his weekends in Gugulethu teaching kids how to read and write (and possibly some righteousness), you’ll find me at the beach!

Sorry to burst your bubbles, folks, but this guy sounds like a complete loser. To be assaulted so many times and in that manner in Mowbray or surrounds means he must have been associating with low-lives or dealing in dodgy stuff – and that’s even assuming those stories are true. I live in Obs, I am a middle-aged woman who comes and goes at all times. I have never been assaulted or mugged or anything close to it.
And if the only work he could get was as an fairground attendant – give me a break!! No wonder he left SA. He’s unskilled and unqualified for anything so can’t hope to get anywhere in the SA job market, probably a stoner so forget about any enterprising ideas. Gone are the days of getting any job you want just because you have a white skin, now you have to have an edge (as I’m sure almost all of you reading this have!)
He probably can’t come back here anyway because some gangster is after him.
It’s easy to get into Canada if you go about it the right way and you have some qualification or added value. This dude is exploiting a flawed system (check what their PM has to say about their refugee system) and he’s going to score from the grants and benefits given to refugees.

@Justin McCall
”My argument is with the Canadian government, that they can believe and approve of what he had to say without consulting the SA government. Or in fact asking one of us for that matter.”
The decision was made by the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (IRB). The IRB is independent and therefore does not need to consult any third parties, such as the Government of Canada or the applicant’s country of residence. I therefore believe that any attempts by the South African Government to “apply pressure” to reverse the decision will be fruitless. In terms of an IRB ruling, and appeal is permissible within 15 days of notification, but this type of appeal is only made in cases where the original application for refugee status was denied. The Federal Court of Canada is responsible for the judicial review of the IRB decision – but the 15 day requirement has passed. And who exactly would lodge an appeal with the Federal Court? The South African Government? I’m sure that it would be in the best interests of the South African Government not to interfere with the decision of the IRB or any other Immigration Board for that matter.
I’m sure the money spent on an appeal would be better spent by looking into the needs of minority groups living in South Africa as to establish why they feel persecuted and neglected… and how about looking at the situation of the refugees living in South Africa? Or maybe the money would be better spent on a BRABUS M-Class tuning package for MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko?
This story will blow over once the tests results for Caster Semenya are released/next farmer is shot/car hijacked/money embezzled/random YL statement/dropping of charges etc.
Bah!!!

I’m glad I read all the comments – I’m still not sure who I agree with. But I am very impressed by how intelligent & “grown-up” this discussion is. There seem to be great arguments & facts from both views.
Seth, great job for sharing this post & moderating the discussion.

If you want to go, go but all we ask that you do it quietly and quickly. The decision made by William Davis in this case was the supposition that Caucasians in South Africa were a minority in the hundreds. He was duped and Canada now deserves what they get from here on out in VISA applications which after this “carnival attendant” may be just be potato peelers, aging stay at home kids who no matter what country they’re from would always be bums.
Strange, with this grand persecution complex that many Caucasian South African seem to chide when they don’t get their way conveniently forget that they’re still an active part of the political process e.g. DA -> Helen Zille. But color aside, REAL South Africans endeavour to forge ahead and see any problem as the potential opportunity it is without any hoopla at play.
Besides which, this psychology of whining, is indicative of the fact that we all know that our country is worth fighting for and if you’re stupid to believe otherwise – join that MORON in Canada!

He took a chance and the Canadians gave it to him. Good for him.
But there are a few things odd about it.
He says he was mugged seven times and stabbed 3 times. Not once did he report these crimes to the police.
Have to ask why.
How can the SA Government be held responsible or negligent if he never reported it.
The report just says he was brought up in Mowbray. Did all these attacks happen in Mowbray? Did he live in Mowbray, CT?
Another thing. The reports don’t say when these attacks occurred. Are we talking over his whole 31 years lifetime or the last 10 years?
As the testimony is sealed and nobody is likely to appeal it, we may never know exactly what he told the Canadians. I’m just surprised they gave him asylum because he can’t have had much proof.
Good for him. But it’s a mockery of the Canadian process.

I have to say, SA may be a ‘challenging’ country to live in, but for those of us who have qualifications, read blogs such as this and enjoy the ‘finer things’ in life – our standard of living in SA is miles, I repeat, MILES better than what we can expect overseas (Yes, I’ve lived in many other countries). For a bunch of people living the good life, us white saffa’s sure know how to complain.

Talk about a loaded question Seth.. “Is he a spice master or not?”, like .. “Does he beat his wife or not?” So we know where you stand but may I remind you that during the apartheid years many of our famous politicians were asylum seekers overseas all educated free. The Gov. complaining is a laugh! And with Cape Town having the 5th highest murder rate in the World, with +60 per 100 000 people.. whether its Caprice, Mowbray or Nyanga (all nice and close to one another) – insinuating that he is a spice master for seeking refugee status?? Well that’s rich. Stick to the ‘safe-house’ Seth, you’re less likely to get raped or murdered there.

I’m a Canadian who isn’t surprised by the Board’s decision. It seems allto common in this country that the Immigration and Refugee Board openCanada’s doors to individuals who likely wouldn’t have been accepted hadthey followed the standard Immigration process. It seems Mr. Huntley hasbeen able to jump the queue. Perhaps he would have been rejected if he did, but we’ll never know. One would expect though if you stay in a country illegally that you should forfeit your ability to then be legally accepted and allowed to stay.
I’ve traveled throughout a good portion of South Africa on several occasions as recently as January 2009 including Cape Town (Mowbray being asuburb) and while the rate of crime is very different from what we experience here in Canada, I’ve never experienced anything like Mr. Huntley has described to Halle (see comment # 5). No doubt Halle also provided a marvelous character witness statement on behalf of Mr. Huntley. One thing Halle, we have labour laws here in Canada and perhaps you should travel the world or turn on the discovery channel to see what substandard living/working conditions are. We have laws in Canada requiring landlords to provide heat and power companies are not permitted to turn off the power during the winter months. Considering last winter was one of the coldest in the last 50 years, Mr. Huntley either didn’t spend much time in his apartment because if he did he’d have likely died or the truth is being stretched here.
While Mr. Huntley must have experienced the acts of violence he claims were inflicted on his person as I can’t see how Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Board would be so incompetent to have over looked them, perhaps it’s more a question of street smarts/common sense that led to those unfortunate attacks against him or just extremely bad luck. There are places in all of Canada’s large cities I wouldn’t venture into after dark and if I do then there’s a chance that I might experience some type of crime. Considering just less than 80% of the population of South Africa is black wouldn’t it stand to reason then the higher percentage of crimes would be committed by blacks and this would have little to do with racial hatred? I find it interesting the lawyers sister gave evidence of a home invasion (which happens here in North America) and this is somehow related specifically to Mr. Huntley’s case with Mr. Davis of the tribunal panel chair making comments “show a picture of indifference and inability or unwillingness” of the South African government to protect “White South Africans from persecution by African South Africans.”.
While it is highly likely Mr. Huntley is a scammer and with the aide of a slick lawyer and likely some refugee association was able to jump the queue it isn’t Mr. Huntley who is the problem, but the Canadian Immigration and Refugee Board itself for allowing such a claim to pass. Perhaps the members of the panel should spend some time in Cape Town so they can experience what Mr. Huntley has claimed. On second thought scratch that as they’ll use Canadian taxpayer dollars to do so then open the doors to all claims since they’ll compare South Africa’s standards to Canada’s. In the end it’s just a shame that people like Mr. Huntley jump the system while others wait their turns to immigrate. South African’s you have a beautiful country and while perhaps not up to the same standards as Canada there are far worse places one could be in the world. Mr. Huntley welcome to Canada, you’re extremely lucky to be here.

Unfortunately few people are likely to read my comment, so I’m not sure why I’m making it but I’ll nonetheless go ahead:
Halle: Even if there is just one factual error in your argument (I’m ignoring the fallacies and logic errors) I cannot treat it as credible. And there’s way more than one. Please come and visit SA and experience this place for yourself, I’ll give you a room to stay in AND breakfast.
I’m a 28 year old white male. After university I applied for ONE job, and I got it. With only a BA degree and a BA hons degree. With the government. And I got promoted within a year. I’ve never been a victim of violent crime. I’ve never felt unwelcome in this country. But yes, I do stand out, for the sole reason that I am enjoying life to such an extent over here that it shines so brightly in my eyes and this is what draws attention.
Jeez people, and I’m referring to the pessimists, I am a realist and I’m having a f-ing ball in this country! Get a proper grip on reality, get your facts straight and learn how to write better arguments!

The Honourable Jason Kenney, P.C., M.P.
Citizenship and Immigration Canada
Ottawa, Ontario
Mr. Charles Hawkins,
Manager of Media Relations
Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada
The Honourable Jason Kenney, P.C., M.P.,
If Canada capitulates to RSA: I herewith request Contact Information: To File Documentation substantiating Huntley’s Refugee Application, of White Persecution Claims.
I read the news article in the Calgary Herald, South Africa wants Canada ‘refugee’ ruling overturned. I am writing to request whom I need to contact, should the Canadian Government be coerced by the South Africa Government to overturn the IRB: Mr. Davis’ ruling. If so, I would like to submit extensive evidentiary documentation on behalf of Mr. Huntley. I currently have a legal Crimen Injuria matter before South African courts, wherein I accuse the South African Government of intentionally not upholding the Truth and Reconciliation Social Contract, not only with white people, but with black people too.
I am a 42 year old white South African woman. In 1999, I believed the ANC to be an honourable non-racial organisation truly committed to a New South Africa. In January 1999, I filed my submission with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and I was so committed to the New South Africa, I donated my entire future inheritance to the TRC. Yes, read that again; I am not joking. I donated my entire future inheritance to the TRC, that was the level of my commitment to a future non-racial South Africa, based upon MERIT! @ D-man – The reason that no-one will read past the first few lines of your comment is because its pure and simplistic KAK!
Get your blinkers off boet. Just ’cause you’re one of the lucky ones to have been “untouched” doesn’t mean this is the norm!
Its not a “generalisation” that SA is riddled with corruption and crime – its a researched FACT!
All you neeed to do is get realistic (and open your eyes – Google is your friend – embrace it)

Now, what is this? Now that one white man wants to get out Africa it’s a problem, but every year how many African goes to Europe or America? Why do they want to get out? Because you don’t know what it is like in Africa. It’s easy to judge a person on TV. But when you are the person being judge in this country it’s a different story. So be careful, cause what is happening in SA is grating more Hitler’s’ among us. So forcing us to be here is not doing anyone any good. So if Brandon Huntley is going to be better in Canada, who are we to stop him. It’s better for him being there than creating a Hitler here…

All of you that makes these nasty comments are just jealous. Why dont you all pack up and leave SA. I still love my country deerly bu me and my wife decided to come to Ireland about 7 months back and what a great experience. No burglar proofing , kids playing in the streets , sleep with your doors open if you like , leave your house open when you go and do shopping , leave your car unlocked outside on the street in the evenings. Makes me think like the 80′s. What are you waiting for. Do something about your own situation. This is the life everyone deserves
