PARLOTONES ABANDON SOUTH AFRICA AND SUPPORT GERMANY

Product endorsements and commercialisation aside; aligning yourself with another nation and singing for their victory in a tournament which is being held on your home soil (a tournament in which your own country is competing), may well be the final straw for Parlotones fans.

“Aligning” might be a bit tame. By the looks of their new website (the-parlotones.de), it seems as if the Parlotones have in fact defected to Germany. In their new song, which is widely celebrated in Germany, the ex-South African band sing for the German football side to “Come Back As Heroes.”

It is not known when or why their new affiliation came about, but here is the bombshell video that has left SA fans completely bewildered.

Hey, did you get tickets to the Parlotones Germany game?
    No, it was sold out..

    Wow! I’m speechless..

Commericalisation is a part of business growth and, whilst 2oceansvibe can be teased and get a bit of flack here and there for promoting various brands and products, one thing stands true – these are products and services that we believe in and want to use and choose to use. Some of them pay, some of them don’t. It is common knowledge, for example, that I only use Ponds face wash, and they don’t pay me a red cent.

Be careful not to confuse this with “selling out.” Selling out is if I accepted R1 million to endorse and feature Crocs shoes on 2oceansvibe – a product that I have never and never will like (except on the feet of chefs and kids). And that’s exactly why you have never seen it advertised on 2oceansvibe. It is this very reason that sees 2oceansvibe often turning down brands and services which we do not believe in – something a lot of readers out there are unaware of.

All of that said, if Germany knocked on my suite at the Cape Royale hotel, and offered me R3 million (or any figure for that matter) to support Germany winning the World Cup, would I do it?

    No, I wouldn’t.

Check out the Parlotones German website here and find out more about their song made in support of Germany bringing home the cup.

    * Kahn, the lead-singer of The Parlotones has subsequently responded to this article. You can see his responce here.

hmmm… I don’t think its fair on our side to turn our backs on them. Work is work… I think one needs to do everything in their power (in the music industry) to get to the top.

As a follower of Kahn and the boys, I have always believed that they are proudly SA and will always be true to their home land.

I know many people who do things in their jobs they don’t like but have to do it to get to the top… is this not one of those cases?

If this is the case then we need to turn our backs on all the sports men and women that have left SA to grow in their sports…

So what? They have a huge fan base in Germany. Just because they sing a song for their German fans & the world cup, does not mean they have forgotten their roots. And I’m pretty sure they will do fine without the endorsement of 2Oceansvibe. I do think using the word abandon in the title is a bit of a stretch.

I say more power to them. Drink it while it’s fizzy! They know they are in business and not just messing around being wannabe rock stars.

Not many South African bands have made it huge outside SA. Once they have a few hits it usually falls apart and they end up working in music shops or owning a drive through car wash.

In the US all the celebs do endorsements and appearances for a fee. It creates wealth and wealth gives them a chance at doing music forever.

The next time they play, I will make the concerted effort to attend just to enjoy them BOOing them off stage. A fate most deserved!

I have two stories I would like to tell about Seth Rotherham. Firstly, my brother works with the marketing team who do stuff for Nixon watches. Apparently it is absolute truth that they approached Seth with money and free watches and he turned them down because he likes his own watch (not sponsored) more than Nixon. They asked if he didn’t want to negotiate and he declined saying he preferred the brand he was wearing to Nixon and the money was irrelevant. All very politely handled I am told.

Second story comes from a friend of mine who is in Seth’s “inner circle” and he says that Seth is known for always asking for his sponsored brands before ordering anything else. So he will first ask for a Jack Black beer and then only order something else if they don’t have. What’s more he advises the manager that it is a pity that they don’t have and then he puts the place in touch with the brand via email.

The guy’s got integrity, you got to give him that.

Also some of you out there might find this article Seth mentioned the last time a sponsorship argument like this came up – http://www.2oceansvibe.com/2009/07/24/an-important-message-for-the-new-2oceansvibers-out-there/

Whether or not they also promote the world cup in SA, for SA, is irrelevant. The point is that as South Africans, they should support SA, no-one else.

This is no different from all the wannabe English supporters who only support England because the premiership is all that Supersport is force-feeding them.

The Parlotones can eat wherever the fuck they want, wear what they want, drive what they want. That’s the difference, they don’t have to choose something because it’s on their website. Aligning with KFC might not have been the best idea but you can’t compare seths watch deal with a company that owns 50% of the fast food market in SA, or singing the damn German soccer song, Gernamy are soccer giants btw, it’s a big fucking deal. We’re talking real money here, not nixon watches and some pocket change. No band is going to make everyones fucking ears dance, its impossible! I’d just like to say that this is typical South African, you people can’t enjoy the success of your fellow peers without tearing them down. This is a band and this is their profession, they are being paid to do this and at the end of the day we should be proud that a South African band is doing so well internationally. Look at the opening concert we had here for FIFA 2010 the SA musicians had to beg to be part of it, while we flocked to see International artists, to me that is more disgusting than The Parlotones singing one endorsement song for Germany, come on guys grow up and realize that if we actually paid our musicians better and supported them more than we do maybe they wouldn’t have to take their talent else where and actually get paid good money for what they do. I am shocked and horrified that the South African can turn it’s back so easily on a band that the claimed to love, no wonder this country is going no where.

The Parlotones dont suck because they support Germany, they suck because they are a shit band. Naturally, there are people that like them because they enjoy regurgitated DSTV ad music and it gives them that feeling of recognition. There are better bands playing tiny gigs in pubs all over the country.

    BTW,

    1. To the Seth haters posting here: You are naiive if you think someone can run a successful blog that generates a real income and not be passionate about brands and punt them as often as possible. Do you get pissed off when you find that every second page in your favourite magazine is an advert? No, I didnt think so. That is monetization of a product, finish & klaar.

    2. Seth Rotherham is the ONLY blogger in SA that is making decent money out of his blog. If I am wrong with this statement, please correct me in this post. I challenge you to prove me wrong. And by real money I mean enough to have a decent Cape Town lifestyle, not some guy with a gripe that once made R150-00 using AdSense.

Keep it up Seth, and to German music fans, you are welcome to the Parlotones… and the Hof for that matter – He’s equally talented.

Do i like the fact that Parlotones are out there punting another team? No, of course not. Do i blame them, considering the money and, more importantly, the exposure? Hell no.

The music industry in this country is a nightmare. Making it here is hard, and many of the bands who do manage to get signed locally still end up having to hold day jobs to pay the bills. Parlotones is the first SA band to really take advantage of the marketing opportunities emerging in this country and, under the circumstances, can’t be blamed for it.
Music is a career. Ask the abstract artist who paints lion herds because tourists buy them, ask the sci-fi writer who covers florist conventions so he can eat. if you want to be able to do what you love, you have to be able to get into a position where you can make your own decisions regarding your career and you’ll never manage that if you’re sharing a canned tuna with your cat each night.

They managed to go international. Kudos to them. it’s every musician’s dream.

That all said, i am disappointed. I’m disappointed that it took another country hiring one of our premier bands to support their team while competing on our soil for people to look up and go, “Heck, why didn’t we do that?” I’m disappointed that, even with all the amazing talent we have in this country, Shakira is singing the World Cup theme song.

Our country should have been there first. simple as that.

Super SA they are! Commend them for really making a success and having a huge fan base, world wide. If you prefer different music, fine, but no need to judge characters who have done absolutely nothing wrong, instead more right than nothing at all!

Amazing how when one of our own does so well, and they are doing well, we cannot just be proud and happy for the successful. Whether you like their music or not, The Parlotones are an amazing band with the gumption to go out there and work! They are 4 local boys with more guts than most of us will ever have. Give them their dues…Imagine if Queen had not stuck their necks out to come to South Africa in the 1980′s and faced a Ban for doing it, how much poorer we would have been for not experiencing their magic.

Please do not criticise people who endorse product by referring to them as corporate whores when you do this yourself in your so called “article” – please explain your reasoning behind the links to Pond’s and Cape Royale – how much were you paid to mention them? Sounds like a sell out to me!!!

Wow I really enjoyed this very negative and (un)patriotic article. As for the R3 mil, don’t kid yourself bro.. I bet that was written without any forethought. Kak like this is usually spewed when others are jealous of a person’s success.

Society constantly requires that we set ourselves apart from the masses – but when we do we are shot down.

What’s worse is the obvious agreement from the groupies on this website, who gives a toss if you don’t like the Parlotones music? No band in SA has worked harder to achieve success and at least they represent local talent. Or could you name a better local band that would appeal to the international community? Exactly.. So stfu and go back to being anonymous bloggers trying to justify procrastination.

It’s D-grade ‘journalism’ and opinion pieces like this that pull our country down.
Lets celebrate our artists and see the beautiful irony of a truly SA brand being asked to help the German team in our WC! (try that angle and you may get just a little respect rather than a red card in future)

I’m with Seth on this I’m afraid. What does their music have to do with it? All Seth did was highlight the poorly managed release of a song which suggested Parlotones were supporting Germany. It was ambiguous and Seth saw a gap and took it. Do you REALLY think Seth believes the Parlotones were supporting Germany? Do you really think a person who has built up something like 2oceans doesn’t know what he is doing? Does anyone remember when he did this to Dave and Randall at Idols? He had Randall ranting and raving on 5FM by the end of it and his hits probably doubled. The music video is actually irrelevant. Seth is the winner here and the more you comment (positive or negative) the more he wins. He can only win. Anyone who understands business and marketing will know what I’m talking about. Well done Seth, you’ve very good at what you do bru.

Lets have a look on Seth’s previous views on The Parlotones.

“I must say I was also particularly impressed with the Parlotones. Keep that shit up, guys – highly entertaining”-Seth Rotherham

“I HIGHLY recommend you check it out. CLICK HERE to read about the festival and choose which event suits you. Parlotones on Friday I believe..”-Seth Rotherham

[*Video soundtrack is "Window Shopper" by The Parlotones]-Video Seth created using The Parlotones for the soundtrack.

Go have a look here http://www.2oceansvibe.com/index.php?s=parlotones

Seems like Seth was quite fond of them until they ‘defected’ to Germany.

Really good 2300 word paper Kahn summoned up in a few hours in between being a famous pop-rock star, drinking wine and eating KFC. I wish he could use his essay writing skills in his songwriting. What a pity.

Maybe they have already met at Caprice over a few Jack Black beers, who knows.

It’s actually embarrassing how clueless the parlotones emo fans are. Seth has not “sold out” or over endorsed himself. It’s a website which he happens to be the face of. It’s exactly like a magazine. Magazines are jam packed full of ads and no-one runs around saying the editor of the magazine is a sellout or a corporate whore! why do you think brands love him so much? because they get the exposure on the site (the magazine) and they also get him running around town using their product and telling everyone about it. quite convincingly too it looks like! Seriously you people are very immature and emotional and misguided.

In my opinion Seth is simply in another league and is looking down at all of you like little puppets. He is playing with you like puppets.

Firstly, SETH, and all the other idiots who don”t know what the hell they are talking about, can any of you people tell me what you have ever done to make your country proud? Have you ever done anything half as remarkable as putting South Africa on the map as a place that is proven to have talent that can actually compete on an international level?? Has anyone of you proven to any other country that South Africa way more than they ever thought or ever known! You are all hypocrites for degrading the Parlotones like this, only because they are too “over exposed” and endorsed, and because they sang a song for Germany???

You all talk about supporting you’re country, then why don’t you support one of South Africa’s first bands to make it this big world wide???? You are all narrow minded hypocrites. At the opening ceremony for the soccer world cup we had Shakira, Akon, and a number of other world celebs singing in support for africa, Does that make them any worse than Parlotones??

EVERYONE PLEASE GO READ KHANS RESPONSE TO SETH’S IDIOTIC ARTICLE BEFORE YOU SAY ANYTHING ELSE. RESPECT to Khan for being such an inspiration to every struggling artist and giving us all hope that we can make it big one day. This band has done way more for the pride and image of this country than all you stupid muppets have EVER done.

Seth, be glad your face is very well known because it represents all the small minded, irritating pricks in this world. You and most of the people who posted idiotic crap are more of an embarrassment to this country than anything else.

Fuck you Parlotones. That sucks some monster dick. I wouldn’t be surprised if even some Germans have some raised eyebrows about this. Not sure they’re supporting you as much as they’re stoked they were able to lure you away with cash from singing a South African song to fuck you. Ha ha. Ha ha ha. Ha ha ha ha ha.

So much to say, so little space — but I’ll say it anyway. It’s great to see the return to a comment list to rival the Idols incident and the Apple store debacle. Seth, honey it’s been a while. I’m not wading into the fray about the Parlotones – enough people have done that already. But something else struck a chord with me through the course of perusing the article and the comments: you’ve very sadly gone awol and I fear that “2oceans” and “vibe” have parted ways. I appreciate the branded model and how it works for you as a business, but I fear you’ve lost sight of what — and who — got you here today. We’re the audience and it is our interest, happiness to endorse and return visits over and over that have helped towards your overall success. But the 2oceansvibe that was, it truly that: was. Gone are the engaging posts, the devil-may-care attitude, the edge, and the pure Seth-ness. As your empire expands you’re diluting the original offering (enter silverstreak, who, bless, does write a good post but isn’t you)and you’ve taken that foundation flavour with you. When was the last time Mavis made an appearance? When she did, she was probably cleaning with Woolies products while sipping a Jack Black and probably playing on your latest toy courtesy of Digicape. We know your brands inside out, and the “for the sake of mere product placement” is getting painful. Sometimes we just want to hear that Mavis did a crap job (or a good one, either is fine). Sometimes we just want to watch a video of you getting pumped up to a Rocky tune about to take on Randall without a close up of your Ray Bans or Puma shoes. Sometimes we just want tot go back to the old days – the days when you cared for us, entertained us, and spoke to us like real intelligent people. I am (almost was)one of your most loyal fans, checking back a few times a day to see if there is new content. But lately, it’s there but it ain’t interesting, it ain’t you, and it ain’t worth coming back for. I probably speak for a lot of people when i say Seth, come back buddy, we miss you terribly. The empire may be expanding, but if it carries on like this, your audience may do the opposite. I know it’s a very real possibility for me at the moment. Please do something about it – if you want to – while you still have the chance… xx

I think you need to realise that things do change. I also don’t know about mavis, but I saw a damn funny tweet on 2oceanvibe twitter about her this week. do you follow seth on twitter. All issues set aside (and beside the fact that people should just grow up!) The Parletones have a right to support any team their heart desires. We do not own them, we cannot decide who they should or should not support and in the end if an opportunity arises to broaden their market, and make a bit of money in the process, all the better. That is what any sensible business person would do. Should they live on bread and water? They have bills to pay, just like all of us. So please grow up and find some better cause to yap about!

On the subject of patriotism…I think you should revisit the word and ask yourselves why you are bashing (and have done way before the German song) a local band that is showing the world that SA has decent live acts. Youtube comments are abound with shock that they are from SA…finally something to be proud of and you on their own home turf are their biggest critics.
They are featured on the front page of Itunes, in the ABC Music lounge, in the UK Sun and have the backing of MTV USA…these are all international press….but they get this from their own local press. Just good ol SA press doing what they do best.

I cannot believe how narrow minded some people on here are. They are selling music and promoting themselves – thats what they do for a living. I have seen them play in countries all over Europe and in SA and they promote their country and are very clear about where they are from and very proud about it too. Fair enough if you don’t like their music, but a hell of a lot of people do. I wonder how many of you would have done the same if you were in their shoes.

Parlotones have been one of my favorite SA bands for a while, not only because of the fact that they are so talented but because they have always showed their utmost support for SA and all their SA fans! all you haters are complete hypocrites, not one of you can tell me that apart from Bafana Bafana you do not support an overseas team “Manchester United, Liverpool etc etc” and now with the World Cup – not one person can say that they are not supporting another country now that Bafana Bafana are out! Shame, do I sense a bit of sour grapes? Seth, you’re one of those typical South Africans who cannot live with it when someone/some band has made it, while you’re still stuck in the tiny little island called your mind. Weigh up the differences: Parlotones rock, Seth stinks, everybody knows the Parlotones, Seth is a wannabe who gets his publicity via the band; the band has a life, Seth spunges on the lives of others, tries to drag it to his level by providing irrelevant criticism and then has to eat the pudding all over his face when those whom he critise have actually better verbal skills than him!! Get a life Seth and consider a different career!!
