WYCLEF JEAN – DON’T GO TOWARDS THE LIGHT

27.07.2010

You hear the news? Multi-talented musician and purveyor of all things chilled, Wyclef Jean, is perhaps, potentially, maybe, could-be, considering running as a presidential candidate in the forthcoming Haitian elections.

Apparently he’s been tempted to run because of a grassroots youth following lobbying strongly for his political voice in that country. It’s called Face to Face.

Well, that’s great, Jean, but we’re talking about HAITI, here. Again, with capitals, HAITI.

Here are five incredibly sound reasons why this would be a very, very bad idea.

  1. As a rule, people only aim for the President’s chair for self-enrichment, unless they happen to be super-idealistic.
  2. As a rule, super idealistic musicians don’t make money.
  3. Jean has made a LOT of money as a musician. Don’t kid yourself, you’re a mainstream kind of guy.
  4. Having a grassroots youth following doesn’t mean people love you for your policy. It means people love you because you’re a superstar. Ask George Weah.
  5. With that in mind, ask yourself, do you really want to risk assassination, civil unrest and the day-to-day headaches that come with running a third world country?

C’mon guy, just come to 4th Beach for one afternoon. Seth will let me out of the cage, and we’ll talk.

I understand that it can be hard being a critically acclaimed, internationally popular musician. I understand that, I blog from a basement.

Live the holiday Jean. Don’t run from it.
