A lot of us are currently using the iPhone 4 are only now coming to terms with Apple’s reluctance to allow Siri to run on our hardware. There’s probably even a bunch of us using Android that wish we could have something similar. Well, iHave good news. There’s an app for that.
Vlingo is an app available for iOS, Android, Blackberry and Nokia smartphones. It’s not quite Siri, but it’s a pretty good substitute. I downloaded the app at the beginning of the week, and so far I’m loving it. It’s pretty amazing for when you’re driving as well.
Obviously, it’s not Siri, so the integration isn’t as thorough, but the functionality is very simple. Launch the app, push a button, and speak your command. So, for example, if I say: “Text Ryan: Hi I’m stuck in traffic. Going to be a bit late”, the app will compose a text message, choose the ‘Ryan’ in my contacts that I’m most likely to message, and show me the final message for approval. One tap on send and it’s on its way.
But is doesn’t stop there. Vlingo also does emails, social media updates, and phonecalls. It’ll even use Google Maps to find places near you. Oh, and it’s pretty damn accurate at picking up what you’re trying to say. I’ve only had one or two misfires, and once I’ve corrected it it’s remembered the changes.
The best bit? This app is free. Without limitation.
