The Beagle Freedom Project rescues dogs that are bred and used for lab testing. These dogs are born in laboratories and live in cages their whole lives. The project recently rescued 40 dogs, between ages four and seven, who have never seen outside sunlight. Back in June, the organization also gave nine other lab beagles a second chance at life.
The rescue mission is the largest yet for the group Animal Rescue Media Education (ARME).
Beagles are the breed of choice for lab testing of pharmaceutical, household, and cosmetic products due to their “friendly, docile, trusting, forgiving, people-pleasing personalities,” their ability to adapt to life in a cage and the fact that they are relatively inexpensive to feed.
When the beagles are no longer needed for research, some labs contact organizations such as ARME, who then work to find good homes for the dogs.
This video shows some of the rescued dogs in June being let out on a patch of grass outside for the first time:
If, like me, you are completely disgusted about this, the answer is simple: support companies/brands that do not test on animals. Click here to view a list of them.
