    Nobanda Nolubabalo

By now you must have heard of Nobanda Nolubabalo, the 23 year-old South African who was arrested in Bangkok on Monday. She is accused of being a drug mule and was allegedly carrying 1.5kg of cocaine, hidden in her dreadlocks. Photos of customs officers searching her hair have since appeared online.

The drugs have a street value of R1,2m! The people who hired her allegedly only paid her a little over R15 000 for this “job” that could now cost her her life. This is because Thailand has some of the toughest anti-drugs laws on the planet, with judges permitted to impose the death penalty for traffickers.

Nobanda was arrested on the very same day that another South African, Janice Linden, was killed by lethal injection after she was caught in November 2008 trying to smuggle 3kg of crystal meth into the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou.

Here are some more images of the “extraction” process:

I dont know she was thinking, she is in school why sacrifice her life for only R16000,u cant even buy a car,a house, its 1-3 months worth of money for your life.I cant say I am not feeling sorry for her course I am,she does not strike me as that kind of a gal,the big fish is who we should blame for making our young people take such risks, ofcourse poverty, peer presure, life style is wat made this young gal take the risk.I just hope they atleast let her come back to us,dnt think its possible but I will keep her in my prayers.Feeling very sorry for her and her family they must be really dissapointed with her.All I can say is best of luck to her.

Poor, Stupid Girl…WTF!!!what was she thinking? couldn’t she negotiate for more money? how gullible is she to even believe that she’ll get 16000 when she got back…unless this is not her first time. When is South Africa executing Nigerians, Chinese, the Spanish DRUG MULES…Whose punishing them and showing no mercy!!!!! it’s sad that our government can’t provide for its own people, i bet this girl if she had a job/Opportunities here to be someone then she would have said no…..how many South Africans are unemployed? it took me 3 YEARS TO GET A JOB…WITH A DEGREE…she was the brave one, there are plenty thinking about doing the same thing. Unfortunately, job applications and studying doesn’t pay the bills.

My heart bleeds for this young woman [and all the drug mules around the world]. I cannot imagine what she is going through rite now. I wish her all the best. It’s sad that she was sacrificed by the big fish… the Glen Aggliottis of this world. Poverty and lures of better things made her do such a silly mistake. I’m sure this is thee most stupid thing she’s ever done. Unfortunately she must serve time – in a foreign land. Heres what I wish could happen to her:
    1. receive a fair and speedy trial
    2. be sentenced appropriately [five years at the most]
    3. be treated with human dignity
    4. be forgiven by her family and all of those that she may have harmed through out this experience [f@ck everyone else].
    5. she recoveres from this traumatic experience as quickly as possible.

she is a poor child, who made a wrong decision.
I wish you and all my country men all of the best in the foreign soil… Proudly South African!

Muzi, she wasn't poor. She was a model-C child whose parents paid for her education ... she wasn't a welfare child like the rest of us. Let us stop assuming that just because she's black, she's automatically poor. She was greedy for a mere R16, 000 and in that process, she would have destroyed 1000's of lives with those drugs. She deserves a very harsh sentence

my heart breaks for her, she is so young, it makes me realise that people will do anything for money. i can’t help wonder what was going through her mind when she accepted to do this, and what led her to that decision. All i can do is pray for her, if Jesus forgave me of my sins, His grace and mercy is sufficient for her as well and therefore i cannot condemn her.

The most sad part is her parents who have done every thing to give her a brighter future and instead making become the best she destroyed her life over a lousy R15000. But looking to another side of the story, this is the realty young people of SA are facing, your parents spend every penny they have to give you the best education with the hope that you will have a brighter future. After getting your degree or diploma you become unemployed. Our government keeps on encouraging young people that education is the key to success, but with the empty promises our government makes, you are left with no choice but to take anything that will bring you money so that you can survive

so i guess a young mind will always be a curious mind , we should not

How many lives would these drugs have ruined had she made it back to South Africa? Yes we will pray for her but brothers and sisters, remember that no sin goes unpunished!! Even God knows that we are not perfect but that does not exempt us from punishment. Only God can help her now.

How dumb must you be to classify her action as a mistake.

She clearly knew the consequences of her actions but was to greedy and overcrowded by her love for money to think. I mean putting the drugs in her hair was premeditated plan. No way she just woke up with dreads.

I'm sorry but I'm glad she got caught and she deserves any punishment she receives.

I also blame her parents, raise your children with morals and integrity so that they can make the right choices in life.

@Michelle from the little that I’ve read her parents did the best they could, sent her to a good school, made sure she went to uni, her grandmother lamented on how disappointed she was, none of her other kids have ever being in trouble. I feel it’s unfair to place the blame on them when they did their best and the minute she was no longer under their control she strayed, much like other kids, unfortunately she strayed too far to be saved.

I had no idea that we were an unforgiving people. There’s no denying this girl lost it in the worst way, but at the end of the day she’s human and the reality of her situation is dire, she was headed for trouble and boy did she get it. Regardless of my disappointment in her, I truly feel sorry for her, she gambled with her life, played the wrong and lost, but she’s still someone’s child and no parent to go through that pain, I can just imagine how difficult it must have been for them to watch that video, I don’t know the girl, but GOD!!!

The truth is life is precious in the eys of God. We all make wrong choices once in our lives! Yes she didn’t foresee what her greed would bring her as there are dark forces in this life that entice us, the power to resist differs from person to person. The enemy is not the world but the choices we must live with once all is revealed. Perhaps she wanted to opt out we will never know. May she find God’s mercy and learn that there are two roads and one always leads to death! Jesus please help this soul as she is faced with the shame she caused and she feels! Be with her parents and hold them close to You! Help our nation to fear you so we canm raise our kids in wisdom and in truth! There is life after death through the salvation offered by Christ, I don’t hate you, I hope you will find peace. People of our nation, in all our communities do we question our children who don’t work when they bring hope expensive goodies? Are we not to blame that at times we tend to blame and not start acting against crime in our homes! Let’s start with our families so that they can uphold the teachings they learn from us! Be the change you want to see in the world…

    @tshidi,

I’m sorry my parents brought me up exactly like that andnow the difference between right and wrong.

I am a realist. Those drugs would have ended up with the youth eventually and ended many lifes. Crime does not pay and she deserves to be punished.

I’m basing my assumption on her actions not on articles praising her upbringing. She needs to used as an example to all them gold digging woman in SA( yes I said it) there is a price to pay.

Its shocking to see that south africans don’t stick together. Who cares about what she did and why she did it, we should concern ourselves with getting her back to south africa and then of course punishing her. She is human, we all make mistakes! We must remember that most drug mules are coerced into doing it, we don’t know in what situation she was nor what her emotional state is! I feel unbelievably sorry for her! Yes, we know the consequences to our actions yet we all take a risk, like drinking and driving or even using our phones while driving, some consequences are bigger than others. I truely hope that our government is able to help her more than they helped Janice Brownyn Linden! Nobanda and her family are in my thoughts and I truely hope that this lesson doesn’t cost her her life! You are in my prayers!

Who are you to judge others, dont we all have skeletons of our own? dont we all make mistakes? Ofcourse we do and the sad part is that they differ in size and consequence. She was naive, and she is learning her lesson as we speak and she still is going to face the music. I really do not understand some people at times, but hey we can never choose what people say, but atleast we can choose how we take and recieve what people say to us or about us. I love her to bits as she is so dear to my heart cause i know her in and out and is my blood and i really dont care what people think nor say, but hey God is there and i will not stop praying till i see progress even in the wrong that she has done, coz to me shes not a stranger but my dearest older sister and no one can do or say anything to change that. To me she still is and always will be my sister and i certainly do not want to see her suffer in any kinda way and yes what she did was wrong and i think she knows that by now. “MY BEAUTIFUL SIS, REMAIN STRONG, FOR THE LORD HAS SENT HIS ANGELS TO WATCH OVER YOU AND GUIDE YOU THROUGH THE TOUGH TIME YOU ARE GOING THROUGH, HE WILL DEVINELY INTERVENE AND WILL MAKE A MIRACLE OUT OF THIS BAD ORDEAL AND YOU WILL BE A LIVING TESTIMONY OF HIM BEING REAL!” ( I LOVE YOU SIS AND WILL FOREVER LOVE YOU AND I PRAY THAT GOD KEEPS ME TILL YOUR RETURN TO MNA, UMAMA WAKHO UHONJISWA, UR GRAN UNOMANDLA AND YOUR LIL SIS USESONA)

True that “to err is human, to forgive its divine”. Who are we to judge? We all make mistakes, small and big, some goes unnoticed and some explode in our hands and we pay the price for them….
