A large fishing vessel has run aground at Clifton First beach, Cape town. With heavy mists greeting excited gawkers this morning, one can be sure the same fog played a role in theis ship running aground.

We are picking up details as we go, but a local convenience store manager confirmed that he heard lots of buzz about it on his “wireless radio,” which allows him to overhear emergency services conversations. He said it must have occured around 4am.

    News24 reckon:

A 50m fishing trawler has run aground at First Beach in Clifton, Cape Town on Saturday morning, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.

“All people on board at the stage are safe, but with an incoming tide that may change,” spokesperson Craig Lambinon said.

The Japanese trawler was about 20 metres off-shore in the wave-line and rescue efforts were in progress.

The question is … what is a Japanese trawler doing off our coast? raping our reserves as usual? more info on this link http://t.co/2AHpSPPs

and who’s going to pay to for the salvage and cleaning the mess??

    • Deon Fialkov

      Some great photos !
Now people have an opportunity to get off facebook and twitter for a few minutes, and physically go check it out and take some pictures and experience some overseas debacle in motion…

    • jason

Its probably just a technical issue and an unfortunate mishap.

    • Mecheal

Ja guys, what’s it doing in our waters while local fishing quotas are reduced every year?
Who’s paying? Well the NSRI are, in rescuing, NO Government funding (unless you count tax rebates on donations) – Platinum partners pay their overheads and ALL crew are volunteers…makes you think!?? Station 2 Bakoven and Station 3 Table Bay are in the thick of it at Clifton today.
See http://www.nsri.org.za for more, and ways to support them – I do!
If it stays aground? Crew will obviously be rescued by the NRSI. News is very limited at this stage, but if no insurance and it stays aground, we sit with another Seli 1 situ, waiting for an entrepreneur to rescue us and foot the bill. At least less oil involved with a fishing vessel, but there’ll still be enough to cause damage if it breaks up.

It’s about 3 years since the Seli 1 debacle (Sept ’09). Approx 2500km of coastline and our Maritime laws haven’t been updated yet – to ensure foreign vessel responsibility AND accountability??
Suppose too busy passing Secrecy bills to hide truths and promoting e-toll robbery…

    • Gordo

Good points Mecheal, after a surf in big bay by the wreck, you can see remnants of oil on yourself Let’s hope they can salvage this boat ASAP.

as ive mentioned on this subject that trawler has enough hitech marine electronics onboard to know eactly its position within min 5 meters there has to be another reason here worth looking into this vessel running aground, these trawlers operate in deep sea conditions they know exactly where they are at any given moment on the high seas, dont think fog played a role here as there is fog at sea around the world worth looking into this situation

    • FWJ

if you look at the coastline versus the location of the grounding of this vessel it indicates a possible purposefull grounding if this vessel had engine problems this vessel will ground lengthwise in relation to the coastline, looking on the marine chart for this location is a very tight squeeze in relation to the coastline samsa must look into this grounding of this vessel, the master\capt of this vessel cant say he didnt know where he was,as port control will have picked him up entering table bay and contacted him on vhf marine that he is close inshore-cape town radio would do the same,he has enough marine electronics navigation equipment on his bridge to tell him exactly where he is at any given time,if he had engine failure and running aground then the location of his position it would appear then be anywhere between clifton beack\atlantic seaboard coastline, this isnt the 1st time that these type of trawlers have run aground on the atlantic\tablebay coastline, this grounding needs to be investigated

just another insurance scam…. gotta love it !!!!

    • FWJ

this trawler needs to be removed as soon as possible, they most probably going to remove the fuel, the ammonia on board is for the refrigeration, this is a long line tuna boat its sole purpose is tuna, ive studied the various antenna systems, seen on the photos, the master of the vessel is in direct contact with his office in japan as the satcomms antenna is clearly visible, the entire vessel gets written off, with its load any negotiations between the owners\insurers\agents\salvage operators is solely for the removal of the vessel, removing the fuel 1st and maybe its load poses additional problems on its existing location in relation to the weather\tidal currents, its going to become difficult to remove this vessel,as it going to get pushed further inshore with the bed suction \sand building up along its keel, the ammonia is a environmental risk factor to residents\sea life in the immediate area, the ammonia is located in tanks on board or cylinders, the fuel tanks are under bottom and that is where the risk is going to be coming from, although it is aground on a sandbank the concern is going to be more what is beneath the sand\seabed,that is the risk factors here, the longer it stays aground the more it buries itself into the sea bed

An obvious case of the crew sleeping.. happens all the time

SAMSA were alerted by a clifton resident at about 4:30am that a ship was approaching. They told the resident that they didn’t know where Clifton was, …that they couldn’t see the ship on their radar, and that the resident should call the police!
