It’s a fraught world out there, friends.
I don’t know about you, but I’ve noticed a flurry of activity around Father’s Day this year.
It’s like for the first time in a long time, people are really considering what it means to be a man. A man, in this time and place. A man, versus the world.
That’s really where we are, isn’t it? Men our age are under increasing pressure to fulfill all of the traditionally encouraged roles of men – provider, protector, leader – while hyperextended consumerism demands that we smell, look, and feel like Ryan Gosling while fulfilling those roles. Well you know what? I’m just a man. And I bet I’m better than Ryan Gosling at a few things, but no one cares.
Guys our fathers’ age don’t necessarily let this pressure get to them. They’re beyond that kind of foolery. They know who they are, they’ve been through the mill of life.
But do they know that you know who you are? If you don’t, they might not. And how do you think that makes them feel?
I bet it makes them feel terrible. All a father wants is for his child to be confident in who they are.
So forget the wine aerators, fancy whiskey decanters and plastic cufflinks as gifts for Father’s Day. The best gift you can give your father is peace of mind.
The kind of peace of mind that comes from a conviction like, “This world is a crazy place. But I’m a man, and I’m a man in this world, and I can eat like a man and have a Tower Burger with my father at the drop of a hat. Because that’s what men do.”
And then look your dad in the eye, and order another, like a man who knows that what matters most is what’s on the inside.
