Celestica, the Toronto-based manufacturer that produces hardware for Research In Motion, have announced that they’ll be stopping production of BlackBerry hardware over the next three months, and charging the company $1 billion for unsold BlackBerry inventory. Between the BlackBerry 10 smartphone getting pushed back to late 2012, and new iPhone rumours, this could sort of be RIP RIM.

Or, at the very least, RIP BlackBerry. RIM reported its fourth-quarter earnings in March, missing all expectations and defeating hopes for some kind of recovery before 2013.

    From the Celestica press release:

TORONTO, Canada – Celestica Inc. (NYSE, TSX: CLS), a global leader in the delivery of end-to-end product lifecycle solutions, today announced that over the course of the next three to six months, it will wind down its manufacturing services for Research in Motion (RIM).

Celestica has been a high-performing manufacturing supplier for RIM and will work closely with RIM throughout the transition. As discussed on the company’s first quarter results conference call on April 24, Celestica has been working with RIM as it assesses its supply chain strategy. Celestica estimates that prior to any recoveries, its restructuring charges will not exceed $35 million.

What I’m saying is you kids should start getting familiar with Android.

don’t let the fanboi boss here that comment

I see all you android and iOS users are celebrating. Why though? Now you not as unique and esoteric as you claim you are. Your iPhone 4S, the next primary school uniform Blackberry Curve. Your Galaxy SIII, the new “I’m cool” and so is everybody else Bold 4. So nobody to show off to that you are apparently (well now evidently) better than us BBM addicts.

Get ready to welcome the rest of the world into your little cult! *as i budget for an SIII*

Blackberry had nothing to offer anyway, that slow ass BIS was disappointing, that’s why Android crushed it, Android and iOS are the future of smartphones and tablets, forget Symbian.

I’ve never thought of Android phones as unique or esoteric (?) in anyway – but for the most part, BlackBerries were for people who couldn’t afford iPhones, and weren’t inclined to Android’s cheaper options (Wildfire S, Galaxy Ace, etc)

My guess is they’ll mostly swap to Nokia at first, since it’s a bit more familiar.
I’ll be honest, I’m a massive geek and it still took me a moment to get into how Android works

Blackberry’s are awesome for being social and chatting with friends. The iphone and android is more for sitting at home and spending time playing stupid games and using interesting but pointless apps.

    • ganja

Blackberry isn’t going anywhere. Its always gonna be around. The fact that some manufacturer is “pulling out” don’t mean a godamn thing, other better manufacturers will take up that job

So black berry is just going to be as stupid as any other phone, I’m buying an iPhone that’s it.
