A new investigation reveals that there have been some serious coverups at Pelindiba, South Africa’s largest nuclear research facility. This is a little worrying, because behind the walls of that facility lies 600kg of weapons-grade uranium, enough to make 20 very loud bangs.
The incident has been hidden from the media and has only come to light now, although a spokesperson for the facility has said that there is no reason for concern. According to a DA leader, this is the third time that the facility has been broken into in seven years. This includes an attack in 2007, when the facility was breached by a group of heavily armed men.
Security at the facility has been upgraded, and is said to consist of several layers to try and make a thief’s life as difficult as possible.
