If you ever need an official, local, gay flag, this is it. Mava Mothiba, from the Department of Art’s and Culture’s bureau of heraldry, said yesterday that there had been no objections to the flag which is an adaptation of the international gay flag and the South African national flag. “It has been registered under the Heraldry Act and is protected under the act,” he said.
The flag has become a symbol of both the celebration of queer South African identity as well as the obstacles and hate crimes LGBTI South Africans face that are unique to this country.
According to wikipedia, “the rainbow flag, sometimes pride flag, LGBT pride flag or gay pride flag, is a symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender(LGBT) pride and LGBT social movements in use since the 1970’s.” Wonderfully, there is an Internet site dedicated to creating gay flags of the world.
Each of the colours in the rainbow flag has been given a specific meaning. Red is life; orange, healing; yellow, sunlight; green, nature; turquoise, magic/art; indigo or blue is serenity/harmony, and violet is spirit.
