    “R16 000 [a month] is nothing! It’s peanuts! They can afford R16 000.”

These were some of the statements made by Julius Malema yesterday. He was speaking to miners at the Beatrix Mine in Meloding, Free State. This was his first public appearance after being granted bail on a charge of money laundering last month.

Adressing a crowd of about 400 people, Malema told them to fight for better working conditions. He also promised his support for their struggle and said that their demands are not unreasonable. The video can be seen below.

The day I shall keep quiet, will be the day when I am in my grave. Not even prison will silence me. I will continue to fight for the rights of workers from prison. I shall always be with you. I don’t need permission to address you. You must never be scared. Stand firm on your belief and continue to fight for what is right. Defend the R16 000 because it is possible.

Damn, if they pull this off I should consider mining as a career…

    • Neil

I’m right there with you James….R60k pm…..I’ll gladly go dig holes for that….get a food subsidy, housing allowance and and and…. Julius you muppet!!! Can’t wait for the day that someone shuts that blabbering mouth of yours up!!!!

      Viva Julius.

OK, obviously a R16K salary for a basic miner is not gonna happen. But, after thinking about it for a little while, a better paid mining force (who earn approx R8K-R10K pm) would be very beneficial to the South African economy-thousands of better paid miners will spend more and thus help stimulate the economy via their ability to buy more goods and pay more taxes etc.
Currently, the directors/ board members of these mines who are so against these salary hikes earn millions via bonuses and share options. This money is then often invested out of South Africa, and does not benifit us as South Africans (black or white).
I am a white South African who is in the vehicle retail industry. It would be far more beneficial to me (and any local businessman) if we had many more persons who could qualify for finance than have Nick Oppenheimer and his cronies buy a mansion in Europe.
So, whilst Malema (whom i dont like) runs his mouth……we must be rational before we just write off what he says….otherwise we are just as stupid.

There is no way the majority of South Africans in poverty are going to sit by and watch while the current president is building himself a R200m mega-home. Give it 5 – 10 years, and after a brief stint in prison he will be the country’s new leader. I’ll bet my bottom dollar. Dust off those biltong books (passports), and get yourselves some international application forms.

Somehow the mines Nationalized their debt by evading responsibility for acid water bubbling up out of mine shafts all around Johannesburg.
