This past Friday, multiple gold medal winning Olympian Michael Phelps made waves outside his usual arena. Phelps was competing in the Pro-Am Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St. Andrew’s, in Scotland, when he set a new world record for the longest televised putt, ever.
Phelps sank a 48,5m putt on the sixth hole of the Kingbarns course, and in doing so, set a new record for the longest ever televised putt. The shot was a full 18m further than the previous record set by Terry Wogan in 1981 at Gleneagles course in San Francisco.
A 45m putt! That was the longest putt I’ve ever holed so it was pretty incredible.
To be able to have a net hole-in-one was special but even without that this trip has been even more special, just having the opportunity to come over here and play among these players on these courses is incredible.
The now retired Olympian was playing with former world number three Paul Casey, who also commended the athlete:
Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. It was perfect, he got the line right and pace right.
Don’t expect to see Phelps in the PGA just yet though, with a 24 handicap, he’s still got a long way to go.
