  • Cycling South Africa Are More Concerned About Sport Than The Law

It seems Cycling South Africa is more concerned about prizes and competitive cycling, than safety on our roads. With an almost endless public outcry against public indecency, inappropriate behaviour and the now common practice of cyclists riding through red traffic lights on our roads – oblivious to what impact this has on children (examples here, here, here and here) - one wonders when Cycling South Africa will come forward and do actually do something. Surely the ACTUAL law should be more important than a SPORT’S law? Or do you only take something seriously when your now-fallen saviour Lance is involved?

    This, from News24:

Johannesburg – Cycling SA (CSA) president William Newman says drug cheats will be punished regardless of their status in the sporting code.

The International Cycling Union’s (UCI) stripped Lance Armstrong of his record seven Tour titles on Monday, and Newman said CSA had a zero tolerance towards doping in sport.

“It’s a very disappointing day in sport,” said Newman on Tuesday.

“There is no place for people who cheat in sport and we commend the UCI on what they have done.

“This shows that you will be caught, no matter who you are.”

    [more here]

Give me a break. There are more important things to work on, Cycling South Africa.

You’ll get respect, when you give respect..

I have no idea what I just read.

    • http://www.facebook.com/pabaker Peter Andrew Baker

Not to mention whole pelotons illegally riding on the freeway every other day! Cyclists really need to obey the rules of the road. If not, they have no right to complain when they are senselessly knocked down and killed.

    • Andrew

It’s that time. The time when this continued cyclist-bashing needs to go the way of the Great Big Korn Bites Outcry of 2012. Seeing a grown man tilt at windmills is only compelling in works of fiction.

    • Andrew

Well of course they are going to make a statement about drug enforcement in light of recent news….you clearly latch on any cycling related content you can and try twist it to your own anti-cycling viewpoints..getting quite tiresome to be honest

    • Andrew

I have to say, I find it interesting that you remove comments that dont confirm to your take on the story …..anyway, what my original comment said is, that of course Cycling SA will issue a statement about drug enforcement in the sport, particularly in light of recent events with Lance Armstrong.

    • Graham

don’t show your ignorance – Cycling SA is the body that controls competitive cycling in South Africa. take up the problem with the local traffic authorities. they are the ones who should be enforcing the rules & regs for ALL road users.

Got this off a cycling chat forum –

      Hi Everybody

The incident in Kalk Bay this morning happened right next to me! I am still pretty shaken by watching the whole thing. At around 7am I was waiting in the queue of cars on my way through to fish hoek when the cyclist came toward me on his way to Muizenberg. A Golden Arrow bus approached him from behind and hooted at him. I saw the bus overtake the cyclist, and when the bus had passed I saw the cyclist lying on the ground. I jumped out of my car, thinking maybe he was still alive, but as I got closer, I saw that he was dead: his helmet was completely crushed. Obviously the bus’ back wheel had ridden over his head. The bus stopped and the driver came to the scene and called his authorities. The cyclist was a young man (early 20′s I would say) dressed in cycling gear.

      My thoughts on the incident:

      1. The cyclist (whose ID I do not know) died instantly – there was no pain or suffering because from the time that I saw him as the bus passed him, to the time he lay dead on the ground, was less than 2 secs. Thank God he didn’t suffer.

      2. Although the bus wasn’t speeding, it was in my opinion going too fast for overtaking a cyclist on such a narrow road. The driver didn’t show caution as he rushed pass the cyclist.

      3. I feel that for the time being cyclist should not be allowed on that stretch of road. It’s just too narrow and even the best driver would struggle to pass a cyclist. A cyclist’s route can be designed through the back-streets of Kalk Bay until the roadworks are done. Also, cyclist should take the initiative and try and plan another route – you are actually putting your lives in the hands of a bunch of strangers, many of whom don’t have a great track-record when it comes to thinking of others. Sad but true.

      4. I would also like to add that, as someone who passes that way daily, I have often seen cyclist riding NEXT TO each other, instead of single file! If you are a cyclist using that route, please ensure that you ride single file and tell your fellow cyclists to do the same! As we have seen today not all motorists watch out for cyclists.

      4. My heart goes out to the young man’s family who had to receive such tragic news today. If anyone finds out the ID of the man, please post here. I would love to be able to tell his family that he didn’t suffer.

    • The Other Andrew (again)

So, another cyclist killed this morning. How about posting an article to the 2OV front page, celebrating this development? After all, the only good prawn’s a dead prawn, apparently.

    • seth

      @the other Andrew – a few things

      1) Any loss of life is sad and yesterday’s was particularly tragic. 2oceansvibe’s thoughts are with the family.

      2) We have never condoned violence on the road and have never encouraged physical harm to cyclists. We had one of SA’s top cyclists working in the 2ov compound for over a year and he never took offence once. Don’t confused mockery of latex and prawn-like helmets for anything more.

      3) The cycling debate is an ongoing one, with the general argument being “should recreation be taking place on public roads?” This is an important discussion which people should be having. Can skateboarders, for example, join in?

      4) I drive a scooter and could just as easily ‘nip’ through those red lights. But I don’t – what makes cyclists above the law? If cyclists want to conduct in recreation on the roads, should they not at least adhere to the rules of the road?

      5) Ironically, 2oceansvibe’s ongoing stance has been to do with road safety and the law of the road. So your naive and childish comment below misses the point completely.

Is the issue not to do with road safety? That’s what we are trying to fix here. Much like the taxis on the road – whom I have no respect for (due to fact that a large number of them let them all down) – shouldn’t the cycling community make a concerted effort to reprimand those cyclists who go through red lights? Would this not help toward the mutual respect zenith which you all so strive?

We all have to “think bike” but then I see another cyclist going through another red light.

      Is that fair?

    • Mike

Please lay off the bottle before writing your articles Seth. :)

    • Liz

I passed the scene not long after – what a terrible accident and loss of life.
I agree with most of what you have said BUT I do think that the stretch of road from Kalk bay right through to Muizenberg is just too narrow for cyclists and cars/ trucks/buses -I do not think that cyclists should be allowed on that bit of road – ever – for their own safety. Another two roads that I think are too narrow are Chapman’s Peak (too narrow, even for runner’s in some sections) Chappies is another spot where I have seen a cyclist hit by a trailer & Boyes Drive…anyway my 2 cents.
