On Wednesday a survey revealed that one in four young South Africans would vote for former ANC youth leader Julius Malema.
26%.
According to Times Live, the survey questioned 3,585 South Africans, between the ages of 18 and 34 and showed the following results. 35% said that the would vote for the African National Congress. 26% said they would vote for the expelled leader Malema’s party and 15% said they would give their vote to the Democratic Alliance (DA).
What happened to the other 24%? Well 6% of the poll stated that they would vote for other parties, 14% said they would stay away from the vote completely and the other 4% were undecided.
Shirley Wakefield, of Pondering Panda (consumer insights company):
It’s clear that a significant number of young people are dissatisfied with the ANC and would turn to Julius Malema as an alternative if he created a new political party.
It was stated that 35% of the votes cast towards Malema were from men, compared to 18% from women – and the majority of his votes were from black South African’s. When asked in a different survey if it was a good idea for Malema to start his own party, 40% agreed that it was in fact a good idea – and they also had ill feelings towards the ANC.
