Last weekend, Shigenori Goto became the latest fisherman to mistakenly haul up a very rare giant squid in his fishing nets.
Goto was casually fishing off the coast of Sadogashima island when one of his nets pulled up this four metre-long beast.
Giant squid are usually so elusive because they thrive and tend to live at very low depths – although Goto’s nets were only 70 metres deep that day. The squid, who was found to be male, died when it reached the surface.
The oversized cephalopod was taken to a local government marine research institute in Niigata for further research. “This is the first time I’ve seen such a large squid,” said Goto.
Just imagine those calamari steaks.
