There’s no denying that the majestic whales that roam around Hermanus in season are a true highlight and the biggest offshore attraction, literally, but the little coastal town is also home to another must-visit event.
The annual Kalfiefees, which celebrates local arts, culture and cuisine, and as the name suggests, also paying tribute to those little baby whales being born along the coastline. It really is a whale of a time (you’ll laugh later).
The Kalfie Festival has a very strong focus on theatre and drama, and the line up will usually include a Woman’s Day celebration, dramatic and comic theatre, entertainment for the little ones, as well as a book show, great food and music.
So if chowing down on some amazing meals and getting a glimpse at some whale calves doesn’t sound good, you can also get a great deal out of it.
Grootbos nature reserve is one of the premier locations to stay in the region, and they’re offering a pretty enticing special which caters for those last-minute bookings – because it’s all about being spontaneous, people.
If you book 48 hours before your planned trip, then you’ll get 30% off the normal Grootbos rates. It includes a full board package, which features incredible free-standing accommodation, buffet breakfast, light lunches, five-course dinners, horse-riding, nature excursions, and the opportunity to do some whale watching. Casual.
And if you’ve already locked in your weekend plans (sans whales – lame), then keep an eye out for some more Grootbos specials for the Whale Festival which is taking place from 1-10 October.
