You didn’t think you had heard the last about statues on university campuses did you? Dream on, this one is going to linger.
The latest drama comes from the University of the KwaZulu-Natal, where a statue of King George V was defaced on the Howard College campus. This from News24:
In photos tweeted on social media, the statue of the late king was shown splattered with white paint and covered in pages of writing and a black cloth with the words “end white privilege” written on it…
“The white race is the chosen race and blacks will work for us forever,” were the words on one of the printed pages.
King George V was that most privileged of persons, the second son of King Edward VII, grandson of Queen Victoria and grandfather of the current British monarch Queen Elizabeth II.
Cue white people desperately looking for a statue of King Shaka Zulu.
