This year has seen the consciousness of race-related issues in this country becoming more prominent than ever before. Since the removal of the statue of Cecil John Rhodes from UCT’s grounds, protests on the campus regarding the university’s internal race policies have quietened down, but has caused a ripple effect across the country, sparking anger and the need for change at the newly victimised Stellenbosch University.
The New York Times released an article on the subject, focusing on UCT – one of South Africa’s most prestigious universities. The article is well executed and objectively brought across, a rare trait, and treat, in journalism today. Interviewing students, lecturers and government officials, a well-rounded and insightful view is delivered from a non-South African. Delicious.
