This weekend saw the EP Rugby Board’s AGM held at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth, and anyone who has watched the Kings play can now understand why they are set to be one of this year’s whipping boys.
Brawling, disruptions, racial insults – this really was one for the ages. With the media being barred from proceedings they were left to film the scenes outside, officials attempting to force their way in. Below from The Herald:
There was pandemonium when suspended EPRU member Chico Februarie and Spring Rose official Amir Mpayipeli fought their way past security officials and burst into the meeting.
The meeting was adjourned for more than an hour as EP officials remonstrated with the two men…When the meeting finally resumed, the unhappy delegates were allowed to remain in the hall.
One delegate said Saru chief executive Jurie Roux’s eyes were as wide as saucers as the drama unfolded…
Because of the constitution, an expected vote of no confidence was not tabled against under-fire EP president Cheeky Watson by unhappy clubs.
Much of the drama stems from the growing disillusionment with Cheeky, father of ex-Springbok and serial chunderer Luke Watson. He will now face the music on February 28, where we can only hope some of those players not paid since September are in attendance to stop him sneaking out the back exit.
At least we can bank on one thing – this year’s Super Rugby promises to be one hell of a gemors.
