Today is the first day that no incidents were reported from the violence-stricken Marikana mine in the North West. Chaos erupted on Friday when thousands of Lonmin rock drill operators started an illegal work stoppage and protest march. Since then 10 people – two police officers, two security guards, three protesters, and three others – have been killed.
Watching athletes win gold at the Olympic games this year was certainly fun. Click through for some priceless happiness.
Team SA arrived back in South Africa this morning. They landed at OR Tambo International Airport after taking part in the Olympic Games in London. They were welcomed back by a large crowd, including schoolchildren who were there to cheer for their hero’s. Our athletes brought back six medals. Check out all the action below.
These pictures are shocking, but the story behind them is even worse. Terror investigator Neil Doyle uncovered the images after authorities carried out a raid on a school in Mogadishu. These children were kidnapped by Al Qaeda in Somalia and were being brainwashed so that they could be used in future attacks on the West. The children – some as young as seven – were chained up to beds while they were taught an extreme version of Islam.
Last night the 2012 Olympics came to a grand end with the official closing ceremony. A scale model of London took centre stage and was wrapped entirely in newspaper. Damien Hirst interpreted the Union Flag by using members of the crowd, and black London cabs performed a taxi ballet.
“This guy’s trippin! Hurry up, go to the back, and get me some fried chicken!” These guys seriously know how to order fast food – in particular fried chicken. You can literally see the poor cashier standing there, thinking: “Uhm, what should I put into the computer!?” But he need not feel bad. I don’t think any of us would have been able to keep up either. And that is why we’ve inducted both these hungry patrons into the prestigious 2oceansVibe Boss Hall of Fame.
Whether it is cracking open beers in Colombia, jiving in front of livestock in Malawi, or starring in her very own “Texts from Hillary” internet meme, Hillary Clinton sure knows how to have a good time! Check out her out burning some serious tekkie on the dance floor in Joburg last night, inside.
It is incredible to think that we are just over halfway through the Olympics already! More than 10 000 athletes from 200 national Olympic committees around the globe are taking part, and so far dozens of Olympic and World Records have already been broken – resulting in more than 500 medals already awarded!
The Lollapalooza music festival took place in Chicago over the weekend. And like pretty much every other major music festival around the globe recently, Die Antwoord played there. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly they explained why they don’t prefer to do gigs in South Africa. As it turns out, Ninja & Yolandi does not seem to care much for South Africans in general. According to the notorious two, South Africa is “pretty fucking retarded” and the majority of its citizens are “insecure”. Also, performing to South Africans is “like doing magic tricks for retarded children.”
Finally! The Competition Tribunal today fined Telkom R449 million for “abusing its dominance in the telecommunications market between 1999 and 2004.” The fine followed a decade-long investigation into the company’s practices. This immediately affected their JSE activity as well, with the share price falling this morning by 16c to R17,89.
Hillary Clinton is currently in South Africa for a 4-day tour until Thursday morning. Yesterday she met with the most beloved guy in the country, Nelson Mandela, at his Qunu home. When posing for photos, the US secretary of state even praised Madiba’s “beautiful” smile. See the rest of the pics below.
When receiving a parking fine, it is normal to wish ill on the traffic cop behind that pink ticket. But it takes a lot of stupidity to actually assault one in person. Julien Chabbott is the boyfriend of MTV’s The Hills’ star, Stephanie Pratt. After parking his Ferrari 458 Spider illegally over the weekend (the [...]
Google has recently moved into their third new office building in London. This one was designed by the Penson Group – the same guys that were behind the futuristic London Engineering offices. Check it out inside!
Sometimes we are asked to do things in life that might not be particularly exciting, nor very important in the greater scheme of things. But a true champion will always find a way of performing mundane and / or every day tasks in a spectacular fashion. And that is the kind of person we celebrate here at 2oceansVibe. Today we salute this guy: candy floss for crying out loud! Yet, he still does so…like a BOSS!
Yesterday we received our third gold medal at the London Olympics, when our men’s lightweight rowing team managed to edge out Denmark and Great Britain in the rowing final at the Eton Downey rowing centre. These pictures of Sizwe Ndlovu, Matthew Brittain, John Smith and James Thompson celebrating – a mixture of elation and exhaustion after the grueling race – makes me so proud to be from the same country as these guys!
US gymnast McKayla Maroney yesterday scored 16,233 with a beautiful vault routine at the 2012 London Olympics. And just like her performance, the judges’ reactions were absolutely perfect.
Bert le Clos, the father of South Africa’s latest Olympic gold medalist, Chad le Clos, has confirmed in a radio interview this morning that his son has withdrawn from the final of the 200m individual medley.
Hugh Herr lost both his legs after a climbing expedition when he was a teenager. However, that has not stopped this inspirational guy in pursuing his passion in life: mountain climbing. His latest adventure involved scaling a 61 meter cliff, with one of his prosthetic legs even falling off in the process, for the TV show Who Says I Can’t? He was joined by the show host, leg amputee Jothy Rosenberg, who lost his limb to cancer aged 16.
There simply is no stopping Cell C CEO, Alan Knott-Craig. First he dropped prepaid prices to 99c. Then he slashed contract prices by 50%. And this morning he announced that all standard data packages on Cell C’s network will be lowered to 15c/MB – applicable to both in bundle and out of bundle options!
While we’ve pretty much come to expect Apple to offend at least one group of people – normally BlackBerry or Windows users – in their adverts, poking fun at the people actually BUYING your products is perhaps going a bit too far. Their latest three commercials, flighted during the Olympic coverage on Friday in America, feature an Apple Store employee (a ‘genius’) who has to help idiotic Mac users make videos and other simple tasks. Can you guess where this is going?
On Friday, cyclists from the “Critical Mass” cycling campaign defied police instructions not to go ahead with their monthly cycle on the eve of the Olympic opening ceremony. This ended up in brawls between police officers and cyclists in central London, resulting in 130 people being arrested.
Last week we reported that the winner of MasterChef SA, Deena Naidoo, was upset with M-Net for apparently lying about his prizes. He claimed that while it was promoted that the eventual winner would win a restaurant, it turned out that he only gets to “manage” the place. In a press release received by 2oceansVibe from M-Net late on Friday afternoon, the broadcaster has responded to these allegations.
Throughout the entire series of Masterchef SA it was promoted that the eventual winner would walk away with prizes “worth R8 million, including their very own restaurant”. However, according to winner Deena Naidoo, the value of all his prizes only totals about R1 million. Plus, the whole “your very own restaurant” part also turned out not to be the case.
In an incredible display of boss athleticism, a US guy recently caught a foul baseball flying into the stands during a game. He did this like a pro by jumping high and catching it with one hand. The other hand, as you’ll see, was being occupied by his baby! So impressive was his skill that the entire crowd, including his wife, had to tip their hats to him. And so do we.
Today Prince Albert II will auction off 38 vehicles collected by his father – the late Prince Rainer III. The cars range from immaculate examples of a 1953 Cadillac and a 1950′s Bentley S1 through to a number of bargain basement models such as a Fiat 500 and a Citroen estate.
“With so many Africans in Greece, at least the West Nile mosquitoes will eat home made food!” It was this racist tweet that got Greek triple jumper, Voula Papachristou, expelled from the Olympics. She was referring to reports of mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus in her home country.
A monument dedicated to Steve Jobs is in the works to go up in the main square of St. Petersburg, Russia. The Foundation of IT Progress – the organization behind the initiative – has launched a competition to find the best concept for the memorial. Do you think you know what a proper Steve Jobs memorial should look like?
Imagine posing with a friend inside a mall photo booth when suddenly a super metrosexual-looking David Beckham pops his head inside and goes, “can I join you?” That is exactly what happened over the weekend at Westfield Shopping Centre in Stratford City – just a stone’s throw from the Olympic Park.
