ARD MATTHEWS, THEO CROUS, PLUSH, JACK MANTIS AND FRIENDS

26.08.2010

I will give anyone R10,000 if they catch me anywhere else at 20h00 on Thursday 9 September. Why won’t you catch me anywhere else? Because I went to the same event last year and I would give my left ball to attend it again. Luckily I won’t need to do it, because they accept cash as payment, instead of left balls.

And what’s more, it’s all for a good cause, with ALL proceeds going to the MYLIFE Foundation! What a joke – they’re making it too easy for us again. It’s like we’re playing this thing on easy mode!

So you can party your head off, listen to crazy-awesome live music, and you’re topping up your karma levels at the same time?

Oh good God, I’ve just realised something, I Scream & The Chocolate Stix (a 2oceansvibe favourite and the guys behind the smash hit My Cape Town!) are playing as well!!

Take that, and the fact that it’s organised by The Little Black Book, and you’re looking at a KILLER bash!

Hahahaha – give me a break! Where do I sign up?

Ard-Matthews-Invite.jpg

Ard Matthews, Theo Crous, Jack Mantis and friends.

Enjoy an intimate acoustic evening with performances by some of Cape Town`s top artists in support of the MylifE Foundation. Ard Matthews, Theo Crous, Jack Mantis, iScream and the Chocolate Stix, Louise Day, Plush and more will share the stage in what promises to be night of music and fun in getting together and giving back in honour of our street-children. All the proceeds for the event will go to the MyLifE Foundation.

Enjoy an early set at 20h00 and get to meet the artists afterwards.

More about MyLifE:
MylifE is a registered foundation working with at-risk youth and children in Cape Town, South Africa ‐ those living on the street without hope or support. MylifE’S team has worked within this sector for more than 12 years, gathering vital information on the social dynamics that drive these issues. MylifE was established in 2002, and since its inception has successfully healed over 105 youth, moving them from the city’s pavements into full‐time jobs, independence and a ‘normal’ life. It has given hope where there was none. Website: www.mylife.org.za

Ard Matthews, global ambassador for MyLifE says: “The MyLifE foundation is an organization that is very dear to my heart. Everyone needs a break. Even fully funded NGO’s need constant help and commitment. MyLifE is no different but at the moment it has a lot more heart than it does funds so I am committed to do what I can to change this. Its the only thing that makes me feel good about the living the blessed life I live. We are all a lot more fortunate than these beautiful kids so please join me in helping to make a difference.”

Date: Thursday 9 September 2010.
Time: 20h00.
Venue: Upper Eastside Hotel, Brickfield Road, Woodstock, Cape Town.
Tickets: R150

Bookings: Online (very easy) www.webtickets.co.za

Having a good time while supporting a good cause at the same time is a double bill of worth it!

As you can tell by phrases like “meet the artists afterwards, this is a very unique intimate party vibe. there is no exclusivity here – we’re all one team, helping out with a common cause. Be a part of it – I assure you it will be special ;-)

See you there!

VIDEOS OF THE TOWERS COMING DOWN (UPDATED TO INCLUDE BEST VIDEO EVER)

22.08.2010

NOTE: It was “videos” but is now just “video” as we have finally found the best footage possible!

By all accounts the live footage of the Athlone Power Station Cooling Towers coming down left a lot to be desired.

Athlone_power.jpg

This was apparently due to the demolition people deciding to blow the towers up 4 minutes ahead of schedule.

Dearie dearie me.

Nevertheless, 2oceansvibe has scoured the net and found you the ultimate video of the towers coming down:

Enjoy!

Shame..
GOOD JOB SARIN54!

THE INTERVARSITY BREWERY SHOWDOWN

20.08.2010

Feeling a little bit wonky…

When their students aren’t quibbling over gay kissing, UCT and Stellenbosch University are waging beer war.

And beer is most certainly worth waging war over. Consider these wise words of wisdom from greater men than I:

“You can’t be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline – it helps if you have some kind of football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need a beer.” – Frank Zappa

“Not all chemical are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital ingredient in beer.” – Dave Barry

“All right, brain, I don’t like you and you don’t like me – so let’s just do this and I’ll get back to killing you with beer.” – Homer Simpson

But we’re not talking about the predictable, passe, philistine “down-down” kind of beer war. It’s the on-campus beer production kind of war.

STELLENBOSCH GUFFAWS AT PREDICTABLY SCANDALOUS UCT STUDENTS

17.08.2010

Those of you who are Stellenbosch University Alumni may perhaps remember the annual “Soen in die Laan” (”Kiss in the Lane”) event, at which scores of students clench lips in a moment of heady abandon.

Yeah, it is. Except…

THE 2010 SA BLOG AWARDS – THIS IS HOW THEY ROLL

16.08.2010

It’s that time of year again, my friends, as the cream of South Africa’s blogger crop goes head to head for the industry’s highest honour. As a previous winner of the blog awards, 2oceansvibe encourages all blogs, big and small, to get involved

*blog owners should click here to get a nomination badge.

2010-sa-blog-awards.jpg
The 2010 SA Blog Awards

With the very foundations of South Africa’s traditional press and free speech currently being put to the test, it is (now, possibly more than ever) of the greatest importance that blogs get the exposure they deserve and for people outside of this space to recognise them.

With that in mind, we ask you, the readers of the SA blogosphere, to have a good look around and nominate as many blogs as is permissible. There is some really good content out there and you will be blown away, if you could just take some time out and delve a little deeper ;-)

Some notable items about this year’s awards:

- News24 is the headline sponsor and will be highlighting nominated blogs on their portal – giving exposure to two million strong audience! Excellent vibe there guys – thank you and well done!

- 3 phase nominations. The Top 10 nominated in each category go through to the next round. Then there will be final voting. The final part sees the guest judges lending a 30% swing to the final votes.

- Celebrity judges will come from inside and outside of the blogosphere.

Emphasis this year is to help grow the community and increase outside awareness and understanding of this space.

Nominations are from 2 August to 27 August

Public Voting is from 1 September to 17 September

Winners Announced on 25 September (we have received word from the organisers that this might be moved to one week later, due to a variety of logistics and venue issues).

2oceansvibe Readers are reminded, as they are every year, that 2oceansvibe cannot continue to grow and to entertain you, without awards. For example, we would never have been able to open and operate SA’s first mainstream internet radio station, if it wasn’t for your help.

And we want to keep on working at it – for you – breaking through all the other bullshit out there – giving you the content you have been craving – written and heard. There is a long road ahead and we have some exciting stuff in the pipeline. And who knows – maybe TV will be next. But we can’t get there without your help.

nominate this blog

So please, we appeal to all the readers out there to CLICK HERE TO NOMINATE 2OCEANSVIBE. When that page opens, read it through, enter your email address and REMEMBER to click the link that they email you – which is the final confirmation of your vote.

*As we said earlier, we encourage your support of as many blogs as possible. So to help you on that path, I would like to suggest the website www.popyacollar.co.za - which is an up-and-coming fashion blog I think you might like. We have nominated it for Best New Blog, as well as Best Fashion Blog. Check it out and CLICK HERE to give it a nomination.

THE BIRTH OF 2OCEANSVIBE RADIO

2.08.2010

It was a night Cape Town will never forget – the launch of South Africa’s first mainstream online radio station. The party took place right next door to the radio studio, in the Cape Quarter Lifestyle Village , 27 Somerset Road, Green Point. For those of you who are new to this vibe, it should be explained that the studio has been built into actual retail shop space – allowing the general public to watch the show take place as it happens.

Close on 500 beautiful people, media and celebrities instinctively flocked to the event like the salmon of Capistrano. The ridiculously lavish professionally catered snacks and booze ensured that the party went on long after the evening’s live performers had finished their duties on stage! Top Billing was there, Showbiz Report was there, Francois Louw, Dirty Skirts, Jack Parow, Andy Mac, Soli Philander, I Scream & the Chocolate Stix, The TBG, Jonty Fisher…. the list goes on.

JUST JINJER TOUR KICKS OFF NEXT WEEK

21.07.2010

Just yesterday I received an email from a reader saying they watched Just Jinjer in Johannesburg who had this to say: “holy shitballs they rocked amazing stage presence I went with some music mates and they must have creamed their pants several times…especially when they did that water and ice drum solo…INSANE..”

Now you don’t have to be a scientist or a doctor to know what it takes to cream one’s pants “several times.” That shit doesn’t even happen in Mavericks - and this band doesn’t even have chicks in it. So then you gotta know – this shit is pretty damn good..

Screen shot 2010-07-20 at 9.27.02 PM.png

The point is, everyone who has watched Just Jinjer live has freaked all over the place. Did you know that Just Jinjer is the biggest selling rock band in South African history? It’s true. And do you know that Just Jinjer has toured with U2, Counting Crows and Def Leppard? Also true.

The point is you now have the opportunity to watch this immensely talented band in a more intimate setting – giving you an even better chance of creaming in your very own pants. How cool would that be? They’ll be playing a stack of their old smash hits, as well as some new killer tracks off their new album Milk & Honies (interesting fact: I basically wrote half that song).

Just Jinjer is happy to announce their first national tour since being back in SA after living and touring abroad in USA and London for the past ten years. The tour is scheduled from 25 July – 30 August 2010 and fans can look forward to catch the band live at Barnyard Theatres in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town.Just Jinjer will be back in studio soon to record a full length album due for release in the next few months. Fans attending the Barnyard shows will be the first to hear the brand new songs live.

CAROL THORNS – LIVE IN CAPE TOWN BEFORE SHE HEADS OFF TO THE EDINBURGH FESTIVAL!

19.07.2010

2oceansvibe Radio has the great honour of hosting South Africa’s leading cellist, Carol Thorns, for even a brief few moments at an upcoming media launch. And whilst I might be fully aware of her talents, and the fact that she is heading to the Edinburgh Festival (25 shows!), I had no idea that she was performing a preview, IN CAPE TOWN, before she heads off!

WHAT an opportunity to explore Carol’s musical genius, right here in the Mother City!

This is NOT to be missed!

Check it out:

EDINBURGH FESTIVAL FRINGE DEBUT FOR SA CELLIST

South Africa’s leading electric cellist, Carol Thorns has been booked for 25 shows at the 2010 Edinburgh Festival Fringe for her show ‘Red Cello Electrified’. The performances will take place between the 5th and 30th August at C Central, North Bridge, Edinburgh. Other South African musicians to take part in this year’s Festival include the Soweto Gospel Choir and the Bala Brothers.

Together with her VJ (Visual Jockey), Thorns transforms the traditional cello, taking it to a new level with an aurally and visually arresting multi-media performance. Audiences are carried through a series of surreal musical landscapes that incorporate aspects of World Music and Ambient Electronica whilst retaining the richness of the cello’s classical origins.

Red Cello Electrified is based on Carol’s album ‘Fireflies in the Rain’, which received a 2010 South African Music Award nomination for Best Instrumental Album and has been met with rave reviews locally and internationally. This fresh and captivating performance has been well-received in India, the Middle East and in South Africa, where she is renowned as a pioneer in the genre of electric strings.

A Cum Laude Bachelor of Music graduate from Rhodes University in South Africa, Thorns has been performing for over a decade: solo, together with singer/songwriter Louise Carver and in her own band CODA, which blends electric strings with jazz sax, African vocals and a house DJ. She has shared the stage with many of South Africa’s top musicians including Arno Carstens and the Soweto String Quartet.

Thorns has also appeared at many of South Africa’s top events, including numerous charity celebrity galas (Elton John Charity Ball), fashion shows (SA Fashion Week) and major concerts (Kirstenbosch Summer Concert Series), and comes to the festival fresh from a stage appearance with America’s Got Talent finalists, Nuttin’ but Stringz.

FANWALK FOR PEACE AND UNITY IN CAPE TOWN

16.07.2010

Morning, Chaps.

If you didn’t tune in 2oceansvibe Radio this morning, then you missed a cracker. Make sure you hit the podcast when it comes out.

In any event, you have an opportunity to redeem yourself and prove once more that you’re worthy of the Vibe.

Cape Town is hosting the Ubuntu Festival this weekend (no, NOT the OpenSource software). What is the Ubuntu Festival, you ask? Well, as one might reasonably assume, it’s a festival that celebrates the principles of Ubuntu, namely community, respect, stoked vibes and the fellowship of humankind.

At least that’s my interpretation, anyhow.

BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY: Charly’s Bakery is spicing the vibe up for us on Sunday 18th July, Mandela Day.

Jacqui Biess, and her lovely daughters Alex, Daniella and Roche of Charly’s Bakery, are calling on all Capetonians to join them on a walk through our beautiful city to rediscover our streets and celebrate the life of the Grand Nelson, as we like to call him.

Here’s an appeal straight from Jacqui and the gang:

BRAAI 4 HERITAGE ON SEPTEMBER 24

12.07.2010

I put up a braai article the other day (The New Concise SA Braai Rules) which was very well received. So much so that I was contacted by the guys behind “National Braai Day ” which is a brilliant initiative aimed at establishing an annual day of celebration in South Africa – with South Africans gathering around fires, being the central theme of the celebration. Find out more on this page.

Screen shot 2010-07-11 at 3.12.51 PM.png

Jan Braai, the guy heading up the whole thing, sent me this stunning video, which features Neels van Jaarsveld (from the “met eish” ads) and Francois Van Coke from Fokofpolisiekar.

Very much along the lines of that hilarious list of braai rules!

Check it out..

So there you have it – pretty damn hysterical!

Head on through to Braai4Heritage and show your support!

THE LONG AWAITED CAFE CAPRICE SOCCER BABES CALENDAR IS BORN

23.06.2010

Aah yes, finally! The de facto home of Cape Town’s cool, Café Caprice is loved by a band of loyal fans from locals to international stars and sportsmen, and its unique events and initiatives never fail to impress, with the Soccer Babes Calendar shoot being no exception.

After gathering up some of the country’s finest female specimens to represent the various soccer super teams visiting our country, a model shoot was staged at Café Caprice, choreographed by Brandnew Marketing in order to create a sexy 2010/11 desktop calendar.

The shoot was held in the upstairs section of the venue, in conjunction with a party throughout the rest of the café, which drew a crowd of epic proportion.

I popped in and noticed one of the angels was misbehaving. She agreed that a hiding was in order.

I know it looks like I’m overdoing it, but she was being naughty. Not that she seemed to mind..

STRINGCAESAR – LOCALLY PRODUCED MOVIE SHOT INSIDE POLLSMOOR PRISON

21.06.2010

A buddy of mine, Warren Adler, is starring in a locally made film called StringCaesar. The movie was filmed inside Pollsmoor, South Africa’s most notorious prison, as it becomes a microcosm of the world of Julius Ceasar’s adolescence, where gangs, deals, allegiances, sexual liaisons, fear, anger, tears, laughter and fleeting happines were the order of the day.

StringCaesar tells the timeless story of a young man’s impassioned quest for power, for the meaning of freedom and to know himself, to live his dreams, to achieve his ambitions. We see his struggle to survive by becoming a manipulator, a powerbroker, a dictator – with roots in politics, violence and gang warfare.

Filled with drama, emotion and conflict, this is a production we as South Africans can be proud of.

Well done, guys!

Some of his biggest events to date have been heating up the 7,000-strong crowd for Jamiroquai a few years ago, performing alongside world-renowned SASHA in March 2009 and opening for Armin van Buuren, during the Godskitchen Boombox Tour in June 2009.

That is exactly why we did all we could to secure DJ Dean Fuel for a chat on Friday, during the 2oceansvibe Radio Show – live on 2oceansviberadio.com between 08h00 and 09h30 on Friday! We’ll find out exactly what he has planned for his time with Tiesto and what his favourite Tiesto tracks are. Naturally we’ll be playing some of those tracks for you, as well as some tracks from Dean’s private stash!

A BRIEF CHAT ABOUT THIS SMIRNOFF EXPERIENCE “MASHUP STREET” EVENT WITH TIESTO

30.04.2010

Regular readers will know that I’ve worked on all sorts of campaigns over the last eight years – with most of them being very unique and different and fun in their own way. I have been working with the Smirnoff Experience “Mashup Street” with Tiesto vibe over the last few weeks and I can categorically tell you that I have NEVER encountered such madness and excitement about something as I have for this event and this Tiesto fellow. And I’m not just saying this now, I’ve been saying it non-stop for weeks – I mentioned it on radio the other day – it.is.phenomenal! Did you see the original article I posted? There are over 40 comments underneath – most of them featuring guys and girls losing their minds, begging and pleading for tickets.

Honestly – I’ve never seen anything like it!

Tiesto, baby!

As embarrassing as it is to say, I had never heard of Tiesto before working on this campaign. But with all the chaos of people losing their minds, I did some research. The guy was voted “Best DJ in the World three years in a row! Come now – that’s pretty serious! And what’s more, he is collaborating with South Africa’s hottest new Indie-Rock band, BLK JKS!

So take Tiesto & BLK JKS, and then take this Smirnoff Experience vibe, which is an internationally recognised event (they’ve nailed everywhere from London and Moscow to Paris, Sydney and New York) and bring it to South Africa in a collaboration with SA street cultures and popular music genres. That, my friends, is “Mashup Street” – a uniquely South African international event of note!

Seriously, I think Smirnoff deserves a round of applause!

TODAY IS FREEDOM DAY

27.04.2010

In my matric year, 16 years ago today, South Africa held it’s first democratic elections, which brought the ANC and Nelson Mandela into power. Since that day, some of you have spent each and every moment petrified, preaching that the end was near.

mandelavote.jpg
Nelson Mandela casts his vote in 1994

“When Nelson is no longer in power, we’ll be fucked.”

Then, from the day Thabo came into power, it was, “Oh dear, this Zuma guy is worrying me. if he comes into power we are well and truly fucked!”

But now that Zuma is in power and his biggest fault is his addiction to ass, it’s all about Malema and how he will “turn SA into another Zim.”

Oh please! Do you know how much has to be done before that can happen? Trust me, it’s a lot. One of the things that would have to be changed, to begin with, is the constitution. Trust me, you’ll have plenty of time to pack your bags and run for the hills.

“We’re not going to get the World cup,” is all you bitched the whole way through. And now that it’s here, you’re going for the, “it’s going to be a fuck up” vibe.

Shame on you. 16 years down the line, people are tired of your naysaying drivel. You’re painful and sad and should either leave, or change the subject.

Fill up your drink and enjoy the view.

I’m going for a quick dip in the ocean and then we can start the fire.
