PUMA enters new yacht into 2011/12 Volvo Ocean Race

Cape Town, South Africa, November 2011 – PUMA Sailing fans can catch all the action of the PUMA Ocean Racing team with the arrival of PUMA’s racing yacht, Mar Mostro (Monster of the Sea), at the V&A Waterfront in November/December.

Mar Mostro is PUMA’s second entry into the 2011/12 Volvo Ocean Race having placed second in the 2008/9 Volvo Ocean Race.

Cape Town is the first stop-over in this “Mount Everest of sailing,” a 39,000 nautical mile, round-the-world ocean race, stopping in ten ports over the course of nine months.

A PUMA pop-up store and entertainment zone called the PUMA Quad will be located opposite the V&A Amphitheatre, to provide the public with limited edition PUMA product for the two-week stopover.

PUMA will host daily activities at the PUMA Quad. Sailing prowess will be tested with grinding competitions taking place between 3pm and 6pm on the 26 November, 1, 3, 8 December as well as between 2pm and 4pm on 10 and 11 December.

The contestant with the best grinding results on competition days will win a R1000 PUMA voucher. Two grand prizes of R10 000 in PUMA vouchers will be awarded to the contestants with the top grinding scores on 10 and 11 December.

Daily sundowner Spinnaker Sessions will start on 25 November and will see the likes of local DJs Dino Moran and Craig De Sousa spinning cool tunes at the PUMA Quad from 6.15pm to 9pm and between 7.15pm to 9pm on 10 and 11 December.

In 2010 PUMA hosted a series of parties around the globe to celebrate the after-hours athlete – a person who loves to compete in the lesser known sports (pool, foosball etc) within the social environment. I find it somewhat amusing that people are already talking about plans for New Year, and yet they neglect to discuss the event which comes just after New Year, every year. An event which oozes more class and genuine fun than any New Year party could ever dream of. Personally, I will be in the Karoo from Christmas until the day before the Queen’s Plate – more than enough reason to head back!

Local Star Dene Botha will be managing the festival activities on the day and also judging some of the Festival Competitions including Miss Kommetjie 2011.

News broke of acclaimed cricket journalist, Peter Roebuck’s death this weekend. Up until now, motives for his apparent suicide have remained a mystery, with hotel staff and police remaining tight-lipped on the matter. Roebuck committed suicide by jumping six floors to his death at the Newlands Southern Sun hotel. Apart from his journalism career, Roebuck was also involved with the cricket coaching of teenage boys. The incident happened immediately after two policemen came see him about a case of sexual assault.

From last Wednesday to Friday, Roebuck had been covering the historic events of the first Test at Newlands won by South Africa. He had been questioned at his hotel at about 21h00 on Saturday night by a uniformed police officer and a detective over an “alleged sexual assault.”

Roebuck, who was agitated, asked a fellow cricket journalist for help. ”Can you come down to my room quickly? I’ve got a problem,” he said. He asked for help to find a lawyer and for contact to be made with the students he helped to house in Pietermaritzburg, near Durban.

Minutes later Roebuck fell to his death from a window. It is believed only the uniformed officer was in the room. Paramedics rushed to the hotel but Roebuck was pronounced dead. Police established a crime scene and took personal items from the room, including a laptop.

In 2001, Roebuck was given a suspended jail sentence after he admitted caning three young cricketers he had offered to coach.

Big Concerts have reported that Taxi Violence will be opening for Kings of Leon on their tour to South Africa.

Taxi Violence’s most recent album launch, Unplugged: Long Way From Home, saw the band work with the likes of producer Brendyn ‘Rusti’ Rossouw, from Nashville, Tennessee. Rossouw’s studio has worked with the likes of Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton.

After opening for Billy Talent, in August, and Powder Finger, in June, fans will be pleased to see Taxi Violence getting the recognition that they deserve.

If for some reason you still aren’t convinced, here is why they cracked the nod.

Having seen the success of the Soweto wine festival, Mzoli Ngcawuzele and Lungile Mbalo, both of Mzoli’s Place, have decided to launch Gugulethu’s first wine festival.

They have enlisted Marilyn Cooper, MD of the Cape Wine Academy and co-founder of the Soweto festival, to manage the exhibitors and give them practical advice.

According to the Facebook group managed by the organisers:

The objective of the festival is to create awareness amongst the broader population in the Western Cape with a view to expanding the wine base for wineries, [and] to provide a favourable environment to the wineries and sponsors that wish to position their brands within Cape Town’s Black middle class segment.

Cooper has said there had been a good response from wine farms looking to partake in the inaugural event and the pamphlet promises over 350 wines and other entertainment.

The opening hours will be from 4pm to 9pm on Friday 27 May and 3pm to 9pm on Saturday. The entry fee is R70 per person and it will happen on the rooftop of the Gugulethu Square Mall.

Of course we all know that everybody goes to Mzoli’s, not just black people.

Look, in no way do we condone his behaviour. Insulting references to another man’s female relatives, most especially The Mother, should never be tolerated.

But look, the guy was clearly backed in to a corner.He’s clearly in the court room against his will. And what would his reasons for not wanting to be in that court room be? If you study the transcript, the answer is obvious.

First off, it is apparent that the advocate has already missed that morning’s proceedings due to some poor luck – his car broke down, and his SilverStreak clerk failed to notify the court of his predicament.

So he’s standing in a court room (his work place), getting a grilling, on a Friday afternoon.

Notice how he gives the judge a way out of this inhumane wreck taking place? He called to suggest that proceedings be postponed until Monday. The judge didn’t get it. He didn’t take the way out.

He called him back to work. After a joke of a morning. On a Friday afternoon.

Boom. All of a sudden you’ve got a man flipping out. See how this all could have been avoided?

Anyway, the Red Bull team is in town and they’re putting on quite a show, for free, at the Killarney Racetrack. This will be the first time in 50 years that anything even remotely connected to Formula One races at Killarney, which staged the 1960 Cape Grand Prix.

Having witnessed this incredible machine at Kyalami on the weekend, I highly, highly recommend heading through to see this car in action. And it’s not just any show car, this is Sebastien Vettel’s 2010 Championship winning racecar. The sound is unlike anything else on earth; it crawls under your skin, rattles your teeth and makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand to attention. It’s really that good.

My advice: try get a seat at Shell corner (ask a marshal for directions), the car should fly through here and start accelerating. Formula One cars are simply astounding through corners. Additionally try get onto a straight, either the main or back straight, to appreciate the quite ludicrous straight line acceleration. A modern F1 car reaches 100km/h in about 1.6 seconds, a bit faster than your turbo’d Corsa. Even with those mags wheels.

The Cape Town offices will be fielding tech idea pitches from various applicants – preferably teams, but individuals are accepted. Successful candidates get six months of office space, up to $50,000 in equity funding, business skills training, and maintain a mentorship program with the guys at Google. All of which sounds awesome.

Applications are live on the Umbono website today, open to all South African residents. The deadline for first round applicants is April 15, 2011, but the website will continue to accept applications past the deadline proper.

Today is Friday. You know what that means. That means that we knock off at 12h00.

Do you know why we knock off at 12h00? Because we’re not lying to ourselves.

“I”M NOT LYING TO MYSELF.”

You shouldn’t either.

No one is working productively after 12h00 on a Friday afternoon. The only thing that happens is the willful killing of time, begging every second flee before the great hand of 17h00 on the office wall clock.

We promised you that we would do something to remedy this farcical situation. We’re actually aiming to get local, and someday, national labour law changed, to reflect the actual habits and working hours of Cape Town’s great unwashed (that would be you and me). So we’ve been lobbying our asses off. You can sign the petition here. It’s a pleasure.

So throughout this week we’ve been attempting to deliver the reams of signed petition notices to the Mayoral office. But we’re trying to get a dialogue going, so we won’t engage in mischievous tendencies, like dumping bundles of paper on the steps of the civic offices. No, we want to have tea. Tea, which was offered to us some time ago.

As you can see, our attempt to redeem the Mayor’s invitation to tea has been rebuffed. Dialogue is not possible for the next three weeks.

Hell, we even sent Dan Plato a friend request on Facebook. No dice.

This will not stand.

Stand by for what we call a lobbying “lesson in initiative”.

The one-night initiative, spearheaded by Tourism Ireland, has been approved by the City of Cape Town and will fittingly make use of green renewable energy.  Apparently the purpose of the stunt is to raise awareness of the charitable community work being done by Irish charities in South Africa.  It’s also, somehow, intended to highlight Ireland as a desirable destination.

Like us, you may wonder how the hell it’s going to achieve that objective, given that Table Mountain is South Africa’s – not Ireland’s – most recognisable tourist landmark.

“This initiative will not only benefit the charities involved but will also put Cape Town and Table Mountain in the world spotlight,” explains Helen Fraser of Tourism Ireland in South Africa.  (See what she did there?)

“St Patrick’s Day is celebrated in almost every country around the globe and the impact of the images of the greening of Table Mountain being beamed around the world will be enormous.”

That clears that up then.  Anyhoo, it’s sure to be a spectacular sight.

On last year’s billing were 10 small, independent breweries, a motley crew of “home brewers”,  two bands, a DJ, and a collection of terrific of small, quality food vendors. Over 3000 gourmet local food and independent beer fans made their way to the fest, and drank the home brewers’ taps dry within the space of two hours!

Stadium Shuttle from the Civic Centre. This will operate from 14:00 and the last shuttle will leave the stadium at 01:00.

Parking is free at the following Park-and-Rides at or near rail stations. Station operational hours and security have also been extended.

• Athlone – east of the station
• Brackenfell – either side of the station with access from both Old Paarl Road and Brackenfell Boulevard
• Claremont – off Palmyra Road, east of the station
• Kuils River – either side of the station with access off New Nooiensfontein Drive or from Van Riebeek Road off Station Road
• Mitchells Plain – at the station off Hazeldene Avenue
• Ottery – either side of the station but primarily on the eastern side, off Panton Road
• Retreat – west of the station with access off Main Road
• Strand – at the station or across the road at the municipal offices

There will be a nominal parking fee at these Park-and-Rides:

• Oostersee – at the station (free parking) off Mike Pienaar Boulevard in Oostersee Street and on the Settlers High school fields
• Goodwood – at GrandWest with access to the rail station via the Casino
• Century City – at Ratanga Junction with a free shuttle service to the station
• Fish Hoek – at the station (free parking), with additional parking at the eastern end of the beach parking area

The bus shuttle Park-and-Rides will also be operational, namely:

• Kronendal Primary School at the sports field off Andrews Road in Hout Bay (nominal parking fee)
• On-street at Maiden’s Cove or in the municipal parking area off Victoria Road in Camps Bay
• University of Cape Town (UCT) Upper Campus in Rondebosch

The first buses will depart from UCT at 14:00, and the last return shuttle will depart at 01:00.

Road closures

At Cape Town Stadium

06h00 on 18 February until just after midnight on 19 February, namely:

• Fritz Sonnenberg Road – from the Metropolitan golf course entrance to the McDonalds entrance
• Vlei Road
• Stephan’s Way
• Granger Bay Boulevard
• Fort Wynyard Road

In addition, the following closures will be in place on 18 February:

• Portswood Road will be closed to all V&A Waterfront-bound traffic from 16:30 until 02:30 the next morning.
• Beach Road between Haul and Portswood Roads will be closed from 16:30 until 02:30 the next morning.
• Beach Road between Fritz Sonnenberg and Haul Roads will be open for local access only. Vehicles exiting the V&A Waterfront in the direction of Mouille Point will only be able to access Beach Road via Haul Road.
• Access to McDonalds via Fritz Sonnenberg Road will be closed from 06:00 until 02:30 the next morning.

Routes affected within the Central Business District (CBD)

From 16:30 on 18 February, there will be no general access to Hertzog Boulevard:

• between Civic Avenue and Heerengracht
• along Hans Strijdom Avenue
• along Adderley Street between Strand Street and Hertzog Boulevard.

Premises in this area will be provided with the necessary access via alternative routes and opening of the left lane of affected roads as required. The intersections of Hans Strijdom at Long and Loop Streets will remain open to crossing traffic at all times, but may be closed for short periods before and after the concert to give priority to the Stadium shuttle.

CBD connections to Green Point, Sea Point, Fresnaye and Atlantic Seaboard

• From 16:30 on 18 February, Western Boulevard will be closed in both directions, from Buitengragt to the Beach Road intersection at Three Anchor Bay. However, motorists will be able to exit the V&A Waterfront using Portswood Road, turning left into Western Boulevard, and then making a left turn only into Buitengragt.
• The Sea Point-bound carriageway of Somerset Road will be closed from Buitengragt to De Smit Street from 16:30 on 18 February to 02:30 the next morning.
• The CBD-bound carriageway of Main Road will be closed from De Smit Street to Glengariff Road.
• Two-way traffic will be accommodated on the Sea Point-bound carriageway of Main Road from De Smit Street to Glengariff Road. This route is intended for local access only and should be avoided by non-residents.

Road closures will mostly impact upon traffic leaving the CBD during the evening peak period. Motorists travelling to Bantry Bay, Clifton and Camps Bay along the Atlantic Seaboard are advised to use Kloof Nek Road when leaving the city centre. Signal Hill Road will be closed between 14:00 and midnight.

Armed to the hilt with wrist mics, a transluscent electric grand piano, sampling software and 38 channels on a sound desk, heap was a whirl of ditzy british sensibility and musical genius.

Accompanying her on stage whenever the need arose was a husband and wife team, who were as skilled on their own instruments as Heap was on hers. My brain erased their names midway through the first song that they joined in on in a bid to make more comprehensions space available – the dopamine was kicking in hard. The male percussionist alternated between hammering a double-bass peddle and chiming on a xylophone with his right hand stretched across the percussion pit. And where the hell is the snare percussion coming from? Of course, his left hand.

The female cellist played with a classic acoustic cello, which had a beautiful sound contrasted against many of the electric instruments.

Also on stage was a Zimbabwean mbira (Heap has very, very strong fingers) and a keytar, which was rocked toward the end of the set with a pair of aviator sunglasses.

Heap builds her layered tracks from scratch as she goes, and her live performance is perfect; so exact and so purposely conveyed to the audience in front of her that returning to the album is a lesson in pathos. All of her albums are well-produced, but held against the light of Heap in person, who does so much to connect personally with an audience, a track played through headphones has a dull sheen.

Arguably the strongest part of the performance was her personality. More than a few fans, perhaps encouraged by the Forest Red at hand, shouted long and hard in the quieter moments: “We loooooove yooooooooou!”

Not to completely dissolve into a breathless puddle here, but the forest setting of tall blue gums definitely contributed to making what can sincerely be described as a magical performance. Not “magical” in the sense of faery circles and fire flies, but in the same way that alchemy is magical.

The result of Imogen heap, plus venue, plus audience, plus instruments, is alchemically magical.

But there comes a time in a man’s working week, and sometime’s in a woman’s, even, when a sinking realisation settles in the pit of your stomach. When you chow, you get the food in your face. And you love it.

It tastes good – amazing even. Sure, it’s not as complex or delicate as haute cuisine, but the desire and the hunger is there, and it’s the desire and hunger that propels this particular chow onto the podium of “Best Meal Ever”, every time. A good chow is sociable, it banishes fatigue, it coats you in a warm blanket of comfort and then chills you back to life with a frosted beverage designed for one thing only – to slake your thirst.

A number of consortia, most notably the functionally-named Cape Town Grand Prix Bid Company are making bids to bring the F1 Grand Prix to Cape Town.

The Cape Town Grand Prix Bid Company seem to have the inside track on most of the other contenders, having been invited to make a presentation to one Bernard Ecclestone next month on London-town.

The company was founded in 2007 by Capetonian Igshaan Amlay after a 12-year research and development phase.

Esther Henderson, the company’s chief communications officer, said the proposed Cape Town Grand Prix was modelled on the Monaco Grand Prix, which takes place in the streets of the playground for the super-rich.

“Green Point is ideal for a street circuit like the one in Monaco because we have so many beautiful natural sights in the area. So while Monaco is the ‘French Riviera’ we can have the ‘African Riviera’ in Cape Town.”

The first Cape Town Grand Prix has been mooted for September 2013.

Henderson said the route through Sea Point, Green Point and Mouille Point was chosen for its “sexy location”.

You’re damn right its a sexy location. When the wind is blowing in the right direction (sorry, Mouille Point, I couldn’t help myself).

An initial costing of using a street circuit has estimated a cost of around R100 million to upgrade the streets to F1 standards, whereas the cost of building an appropriate track would crack the R4 billion mark. So a street circuit makes more financial sense, then.

Also, it would be purely mindblowing. And beautiful.

So go ahead, snap up that little Atlantic Seaboard flat you’ve been eyeing.

KENILWORTH CELEBRATES THE TIMELESS ELEGANCE OF THE 150TH L’ORMARINS QUEEN’S PLATE

CAPE TOWN 8 JANUARY, 2011 – The L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate celebrated its 150th running with another historic display by South Africa’s finest thoroughbreds against a royal backdrop at Kenilworth racecourse on Saturday, 8 January.

From an appearance by the legendary Horse Chestnut, a magnificent win by Mother Russia to claim victory over Pocket Power in the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate race, and the blend of fine wine, fashion and entertainment, this was indeed one of the most memorable editions of this prestigious event.

The record crowd of 6 000 racegoers, including South Africa’s A-list celebrities such as Nicola Breytenbach, Francesca Cumani, Jen Su, Natalie Becker, Tammy-Anne Fortuin, Jo-Ann Strauss, Liezel van der Westhuizen, Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis, did indeed revel amidst the theme of “Timeless Elegance”.

Louise Carver, Zebra and Giraffe, Locnville, Gazelle and Crazy White Boy thrilled racegoers with live performances at the Style Lounge Village, and VIP guests enjoyed a day of luxury and sophistication in the Stud Club.

In the spirit of celebrating excellence in timeless endeavours, there was a display of one of the largest vintage car collections in the world. The collection, courtesy of the Franschhoek Motor Museum, carried through the blue and white theme of the day.

Says Kate Salt, L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Spokesperson, “We’re thrilled with the outcome of this year’s L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate – from the elegance of the blue and white fashion, a top entertainment line-up and, of course, the racing. The event has exceeded expectations and has lived-up to its association with Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.”

A collection of South Africa’s top photographers were also on hand to capture the L’Ormarins Moment and the elegant fashions of the day – reflected in the “Best Dressed” competition, won by Susanna Warren, and “Best Hat”, won by Katrina Judd.

“We always enjoy the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate. It seems to be a more exclusive, sophisticated and up market event that our customers enjoy,” said local designer Malcolm Klûk.

Since its first running in 1861, the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate continues to distinguish itself as a sophisticated meeting of racing excellence.

At 12:00PM on Saturday, the 8^th of January 2011, three monstrously tough unicyclists and their support car will arrive in at Mouille Point lighthouse after completing a 44-day off-road tour, from Durban to Cape Town, on UNICYCLES.

How’re your bums, guys? Brave people.

The ride has been a charity endeavour for Bob’s For Good Foundation, which, as you know, does fantastic work putting shoes on the feet of South African kids who may never have felt the comfort of a basic shoe.

It feels like yesterday that I was a grom, chilling out on Battery Beach in eThekwini, catching the odd on-beach screening of Zulu Surf Riders. I didn’t know why they were showing movies on the beach, I just went with it.

And it was freaking awesome.

Imagine all the best things about a drive in movie – minus the car exhaust fumes, and add golden sunshine, the ocean, friendship, and certifiably fine films.

The Wavecape Surf Festival has rolled around to Cape Town , as have I, and it is with great pleasure that I furnish you with the details of said festival. But first, a little something for your eyes.

Yes, that’ll be on the festival screens at some point (to find out exactly which point, download the festival schedule at the bottom of the post).

Alright, here’s what you have to know.

The festival begins with the Wavescape Surfboard Art Exhibition from December 1 to 7 at Depasco Cafe in Gardens. Twelve surfboards decorated by artists will go on auction on December 8. They’re worth a visual perv, even if you’re absolutely broke. If you do feel like putting a little cash on the table, you’ll be happy to know that proceeds go to ocean charities, including the NSRI and Shark Spotters, with a special board decorated by township kids to be auctioned on behalf of the Ticket to Ride Foundation’s surfing development programme.

The film section of the festival begins with the open-air free screening of Scratching the Surface on Clifton Fourth Beach on Friday December 10 after the sun goes down. The film includes cutting edge camera technology in use by pioneering surf filmmakers (and that’s not just jargon – it really does look very sick, my bru). I must most heartily recommend the Clifton screening, and not only because all of the screenings there are free. Thousands of like-minded people gather on the beach with picnics from early in the evening to enjoy “a long, languid summer evening”.

Sounds pretty ideal, hey? Indoor films will be screened at the Brass Bell in Kalk Bay (R30 per ticket) from December 12 to 15 and at the Labia Theatre on Orange (R30 per ticket) from December 16 to 19. Moreover, Quiksilver will be roaming the crowd, spreading good vibes with random prize giveaways, which include three Sector 9 surfboards, a surfboard, a wodge of meal vouchers from Kauai and surf lesson vouchers from Learn 2 Surf.

But the similarities don’t stop there. The dress for the day is blue and white and its English heritage is apparent, as we indulge in a royal affair, which blends seamlessly with the sport of kings – something with which my palette certainly agrees!

Will Pocket Power equal the world record win of five successive titles? Will you be able to focus on the horses, as you share the limelight with the elegant and the glamorous? Or perhaps we will find you in the Cafe Caprice venue, setup on the race track, just alongside the classic vintage cars on display..

In short, if there was one event I could choose to go to in the the entire year, this would be it.

A ROYAL AFFAIR WITH THE “SPORT OF KINGS”

The 150th running of the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate will celebrate the royal history of this premier horse race with a gathering of the finest thoroughbreds in South Africa at Kenilworth Race Course on Saturday, 8 January 2011.

Since 1861, when this race was first run in honour of Queen Victoria, the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate has distinguished itself as a sophisticated meeting of racing excellence, matched by the style and grace worthy of such a prestigious event.

Pocket Power’s dominance of the race for four consecutive years has earned his place as one of South Africa’s greats, alongside legends Wolf Power, Sea Cottage and Politician. An exciting crop of newcomers will also be vying for the role of heir apparent to Pocket Power’s throne.

The inaugural Cape Town Festival of Beer has partnered with Rikki’s Taxis to ensure that visitors to the festival are not tempted to drink and drive.

With over 20 different brewers and more than 40 brands of beer on offer, the Cape Town Festival of Beer wants its patrons to avoid taking their cars to the event at all.

“We have beers of all persuasions,” say the Festival Organisers, “and it’s a rare opportunity to try all the different styles and meet the people behind the labels, but we are particularly concerned about drinking and driving.”

The Cape Town Festival of Beer team have asked Rikki’s to get on board with a strong presence at the exit to the Festival on all three days of the event (25-27 November) to be held on the fields of Hamilton Football Rugby Club in Greenpoint.

A collection of micro, home and big-name brewers will be present along with food, a music line-up and live coverage of the final Springbok clash of the year.

On the 28th of October, the POZteam will launch the first-ever medical health magazine in South Africa, completely free to the public. In the luxurious new Taj Hotel in Cape Town, a glamorous gala will welcome guests to experience the launch of the magazine.

On the 29th of November 2010 they’ll be undertaking a marathon trek from Saldanha, on South Africa’s West Coast, to Cape Town. That’s a distance of 142 kilometres. Now I don’t know about you, but the daily trip to the water cooler is a significant achievement for me.

Oh yeah, small detail. They’ll be doing it in wheel chairs.

Wheel chairs, ladies and gents. That means powered by arm  and mental toughness alone.

Not. Too. Shabby.

Dries and Glenn will be arriving at the Parliament Buildings in Cape Town on 3 December 2010, National Disability Awareness Day.

Their three main goals are:

1. To salute and praise the people out there who are living with disabilities and who manage to remain positive and to live full and independent lives.
2. To create public awareness of people living with disabilities and to change the stereotyped perception of disabled persons as less capable than able bodied persons.
3. The more immediate and tangible goal of the event is to raise funds for the establishment of a sports centre for the paraplegics and disabled people of the Saldanha/ Vredenberg district. The costs of which is estimated at no less than R3 million.

But back to this year’s Daisies – it’s gonna be off the hizzoooooo! And it’s greener than ever before! Check this out – you are even encouraged to WALK there! I nearly took a chopper, but realised that would be out of the question!

Spring has arrived and Rocking the Daisies is almost upon us.

Rocking the Daisies’ Walking the Daisies and Cycle to Daisies are happening yet again! Continuing from last year’s success, both initiatives will be bigger and more exciting than ever.

This year’s Walking the Daisies will see 40 people walking on a beautiful 2 day, 60km hike through the West Coast wild flower region via beaches, conservation areas and farmlands on route to the festival. Fruit and Veg City are back on board for the second year running to make sure all the walkers are well fed and looked after during the journey. The overnight camp at Silverstroomstrand is set to be a great little social gathering where friends are encouraged to visit for a braai and camp with the walkers. Once again all walkers will receive a free festival ticket and other goodies in return for their commitment to a carbon-neutral festival journey.

Cycle to Daisies 2010 will once again reward 100 people for “playing hard, and treading lightly” by giving them 50% off their festival ticket. Cyclists will also be able hire bikes in advance for the trip or have the opportunity to donate their old bikes to BEN (Bicycling Empowerment Network) after the festival.

As a talented, but fatally tainted Wall Street executive, he amassed an obscene amount of wealth by defrauding investors with a successful pump and dump scheme.

But Jordan earned far more than he could ever hope to spend. So much, in fact, that wealth became an arbitrary concept. Elaphantine quantities of drugs, women and egotistical success filled a vacuum of meaning in Belfort’s life.

Belfort’s tale is exemplary of what happens when wealth is acquired too quickly, separating the bank balance from the context of a sweated brow, and then put in the hands of young masculinity.

His exploits have inspired two Hollywood biopics, Boiler Room, starring Ben Affleck, and the more biographical Wolf of Wall Street (the same name of Belfort’s bestselling autobiography), directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo Di Caprio, which has begun shooting.

Since achieving prolonged sobriety and serving the requisite prison time, Jordan Belfort has returned to a life of normalcy. He’ll be arriving in Cape Town at the end of October to present the lessons of entrepreneurship that he gleaned over the course of his wildly successful, and ultimately tragic former life.

2oceansvibe caught up with him via Skype.

Highlights from the interview:

I heard about someone that was making a ton of money down on wall street and I knew them growing up and they weren’t that sharp, and like well, them? Well them? I can do it a lot better than them.

One of the fundamental problems that happens to young stockbrokers and investment bankers is that, because of the nature of the business you’re trading, you’re not creating anything, and you’re buying and selling. So there’s really no feeling of a tangible a job well done. Well hey I have this company, I have this thing. It’s all about the money that you get from it, so what happens is you start to get this desire to attach tangible value to the money. So you start buying shit.

So what happens is you start to getting into this cycle where the only way to express the success of it – and this is not all Wall-Streeters okay, but it happens to a lot of them – and money becomes a scorecard, and when its sitting in your bank account it doesn’t have as much, let’s just say perceived value as when you’re driving a three hundred thousand dollar Ferrari, right? It got the point for me it was like, shit, it was like Monopoly money. I mean, two million dollars in my sock draw, like loose change.

If you would have told me let’s say five years before it all happened, hey you know in five years you’re gonna be doing this, this, this, this, I would have said get the fuck out of here. No way, not a chance under the sun. I’m a good guy, I never broke the law not once in my life, I wasn’t raised that way. But it’s these tiny little steps you take. I took one step over the line, and then I did things right again, but next time I took a step over the line and it moved a bit, and then the next time the line moved further still and further still and further still, and through these tiny imperceptible steps you end up doing things you’d never do, associating with people you’d never associate with, and it all seems normal at the time. Now I look back at it and I was like, I was insane.

We could be talking of no other than South Africa’s freshest Guinness World Record holder, Jan Braai.

Our man did us proud by braaing consecutively for more than thirty hours, meat always on the griddle, coals always hot, and a twinkle always in the eye. Pretty average stuff over a weekend for Jan, really.

As you will read (if you click that article from The Star), Julius Malema, ever the rock star, visited the same school in January 2009 and promised them 100 pairs of shoes. The crowd cheered so loudly and were so excited, that our boy increased the promised tally to 200 pairs of shoes!

What a legend!

Unfortunately, 19 months later, the shoes have still not arrived – this after he promised them it would take weeks. Interesting vibe – for a guy who reckons he is one of “the people.”

Today 2oceansvibe called the headmaster, Mr. Nthambeleni Ramanyimi, who confirmed that Malema had indeed made the promise to the school in January 2009, and was yet to deliver the shoes, let alone communicate with them as to when they should expect the shoes.

All in all, Julius Malema broke a promise of delivering school shoes to a school desperately in need of footwear. Nice one.

And one wonders why is has it in for the media..

The Bobs for Good team gets cracking!

By all accounts, the Bobs for Good Foundation, who seem to have unwittingly fulfilled Malema’s broken promises, were nothing short of shaken by the poverty witnessed at Makanyu Primary School. A BFG representative confirmed that most schools they visit have a small portion of kids already in shoes – not so in this case. Apparently NONE of the kids had shoes.

Just to fill you in, Makanyu Primary is found in a rural area and is based at Hamphego Village, about 14 km’s South East of Thohoyandou. It is about 4km from the main road (Punda Maria- R524) that leads to the Kruger National Park. The school is situated at the border post of the village near the Chief’s Kraal. The school is about 600m north of the Nandoni Dam, which is a tourist attraction centre.

I’m certainly stoked to be involved with Saturday’s BOBS FOR GOOD SPRING BALL Constantia – at least we know where it’s all going and the good that’s being done! Especially when hopes and dreams have been shattered like they have in this example.
