  • THE TBG SPOTTED AT HQ RESTAURANT

I visited HQ (Headquarters) Restaurant twice last week. Serving just one kind of salad and one kind of steak, I enjoy on the simplicity of the experience. And so does the TBG (Tall Blonde Guy) it seems!

    HeadQuartersCPTLogo
    HQ Restaurant

On my second visit last week I ran into Matt, who, slightly out of breath, said, “Seth, oh my God, I JUST emailed you a TBG sighting ! He was HERE last night bru. HERE – IN HQ!!! The place was going nuts!! People weren’t sure how to contain themselves!” I took Matt to one of the sofa’s and got him a glass of water, as he calmed down.

He said they didn’t get a good shot, but the great man’s ever-present aura was very apparent. I finished my meal as quick as I could to get to my laptop to indulge in the finer details of this, the second sighting (how can we forget Skinstad’s treasured TBG sighting here) in just a fortnight.

    Here it is:

    tbg-hq
It is always tricky for a standard camera
to record the TBG’s aura without destroying
    the entire photograph.

    Seth,

As you know i have run many fine establishments in Cape Town… and never in my life have i ever been tackled by one of my pretty little ‘angels’ that work for me.

I finally found my feet, took a moment or two to gather my thoughts…..and started yelling at her….. I wasn’t quite sure what was going on..

I thought to myself ‘did i possibly take her home and not call her the next day???? – the only logical explanation. Not quite sure what was happening i popped the question “why exactly did u tackle me?”

She said “isn’t it obvious?” i replied “no my angel, fill me in…”

She said, ‘the TBG is there and i need u to take a pic!’

I was stunned….how could i not have picked it up earlier…. That blinding white aura that just oozes greatness!!!

The vibe in HQ was so intense i cant even explain…. Everyone at their tables turned around, there was a sudden hush in the bar, and his aura even outshone the fire place!

It came time to take the pic….. i took about ten….. but his aura was too bright…. all i got was flashes of white light…

I let him chill out and he had the amazing HQ Sirloin (and a few Jack Blacks on tap of course…)

I finally managed to snap this pic when he was leaving. The blinding white energy had subsided just enough to get a pic!!!

The TBG with one of HQ’s angels – Carla.

Thanks TBG….u made our night…. and possibly Carla’s life!!!!!

    later Seth

    Matt

What a wonderful experience. I didn’t realise they had Jack Black Beer at HQ. that’s good to know. With a fireplace at HQ and Jack Black on tap, it seems The TBG is very much living within “The Vibe.” Beautiful stuff. Well done, HQ – that’s quite a drawcard!

If you’ve never been to HQ, seriously, give it a bash. It’s very cool. There is a bar/lounge section, as well as a chill out section with a fireplace. The chow is amazing as well.

That’s what you’ve been looking for

But, more importantly, the rumours persist that The TBG is in London at the moment.

Keep an eye out there, ex pats. You may just get your special moment..

  • CYCLISTS NOT GOOD FOR BUSINESS

Public sentiment and general hygiene concern has come to the fore, as more and more restaurants country-wide are now blatantly refusing entry to ALL cyclists, let alone those who refuse to wear their helmets while they dine – a very particular complaint that we have, here at 2oceansvibe.

This, from Remo’s restaurant, just outside Mount Edgecombe estate in Umhlanga.

    Public 1 Cyclists 0
Remo’s stern notice to all cyclists

One cannot help but be reminded of, and to note the similarities between this public rights spar and man’s approach to global warming. With rumours afoot that Vida e are contemplating “No Helmets” signs in their stores, it seems possible that the freewheeling attitude and socially destructive behaviour of cyclists, might just be thwarted before it is too late.

Who knows, maybe some day it will become law..

  • THE CAPRICE WINTER “2 FOR 1 BURGER SPECIAL” HAS BEGUN!!

I remember when my all time favourite Caprice waitress, Justine, first described the Dreamy Burger to me. It was something to do with a slab of cheese on top of the meat, and then she began to describe how the hot mushroom sauce is then poured over that slab of cheese, melting it in the process. As she described this final stage of the preparation she actually lost her breath for a second, her eyes rolled back and her mouth opened and hung agape for a few moments. I swear to God – it was like something out of When Harry Met Sally .

“Jesus,” I said, “get me one of those!”

    IMG 0009
    Some random killer Caprice burgers

And I tell you what, it did NOT disappoint. None of the burgers at Caprice ever do, to be honest. I’d advise you to try them all – but start with the Dreamy Burger. The name says it all.

And what better time to try them all, with the annual Caprice 2-for-1 Winter Burger Special!

    Check it out:

What’s better than one delicious Dreamy, Whale or Old-School burger? TWO delicious Dreamy, Whale or Old-School burgers for the price of one!

Pull in to Cafe Caprice Monday to Thursday, from 1 May until the end of winter, for lunch or dinner.

Book now by contacting Mike on 021 4388315 or at info@cafecaprice.co.za.

    It’s THAT easy.

Funnily enough, did you hear about Barack Obama stopping for an impromptu burger in Virginia yesterday? It’s true. The Secret Service weren’t quite sure. Check it out here.

He should try the Dreamy Burger. He’d enjoy it.

  • KENTUCKY FRIED SOMETHING

Keeper of the faith, Doug W, sent in the following disturbing cautionary scrawl written on the wall of the KFC drive-through, in the Rosmead area of Harfield/Kenilworth.

    Seth,

Hanging off the backend of a bender – myself and the missus were looking for a KFC, something to soak up the booze!

Anyway, not feeling great at the time we decided to do the drive through thing in the line and as we turn the corner some komskom has spray painted this on the wall!

    Food for thought?

    Doug W

    IMG00237-20090502-1718

Wow, that’s pretty hilarious. Someone obviously knows something that we don’t. Although our national cricket team are sponsored by KFC at the moment and they don’t seem to be growing any strange appendages out the sides of their necks.

    For now.

Good heavens – can you imagine if they were sponsored by KFC in Pat Symcox’s day? He would have fielded with a KFC barrel under his arm, with a drum stick in one hand and a cigarette in the other! The tricky part would have been deciding which to drop if the ball came his way! He’d probably suck the marrow out of that chicken bone long before the ball came down to earth. He’d have to, they belong together .

    Aah, good times.

    What a beaut.

ps. I’m spending the weekend in Kommetjie, this coming weekend. The above reference to the komskom was made by the reader, not Seth. Don’t forget that Kom Skom spiritual leader, Ian “Mettie” Metcalf, has given Seth the key to the city.

  • 2OCEANSVIBE WEATHER GIRLS 4 (Part 1 of 2)

It’s an action packed episode this week, split into two parts! Not only do we spend time with the gorgeous Genevieve Morton (grab a seat), but we also delve into the secret underworld of scooter thong riding in Cape Town – featuring yours truly.

I was hesitant when I first met Gen, but, I’ll be honest, [switch to high pitched voice] she won me over. Besides from being smoking hot, she is a bona fide cool chick.

  • THE SCOOTER RALLY THONG SONG

A stunning day had by all! Andrew from the Hi-Five Scooter Club organised a scooter rally that took place on voting day (GO DOLPHINS!), yesterday, which kicked off at the Waterfront Vespa Shop, next to the Caltex station. A rally that was put together to highlight the perfect match that is scooters and Cape Town, as well as the earth friendliness nature of scooters as a mode of transport, versus cars (sis!).

Everyone assembled at, say, 12ish and it was quite apparent that the reporters from Die Burger and the Cape Times knew about the leopard print thong scooter streak I had promised. As a reminder to those of you who have just tuned in, I promised (in a video that has been watched now 40,000 times) to my stunning fantastic loyal readers that I would ride my scooter through the Camps Bay Strip with a leopard print thong , should I win the 2009 South African Blog Awards *cough* which I duly did.

    Taking notes. Cute.

I must say it’s a very cool vibe, the whole thing. Sure, it’s a far cry from the hard-core Harley riding fraternity who ride en masse from time to time. “BLAAAH BLAAAAH”, we’re driving past! Versus “beep beep, hiya buddy!” So ja, we were cute. We were cool.

Thank God I had a drag on a pinner earlier and the full impact of the moment didn’t set in. (And thank God I gave a little trim the evening before).

So you’ll just have to wait until then to see the spectacle that was.

We cruised on past parliament (giving the obligatory election day toot-toot) and ended up at Speedway Cafe in Gardens where the van der Spuy brothers supplied generous pints of Jack Black beer! It was all just too wonderful to behold!

What’s the weather looking like for this weekend? Look no further!

  • NEW RESTAURANT : BOO RADLEYS BISTRO AND BAR, 62 HOUT STREET, CAPE TOWN

I wasn’t around at the time, but there is something incredibly cool about New York movies I’ve watched based in the 1950′s. I’ve always loved the vibe. The post-Capone era, when TV had just come about and James Dean was doing his thing. But most of all, I dig the restaurant vibe that one sees in those old black and white films. With hat racks at the door and Frank Sinatra playing in the background. That is what I was looking for, and that is just what I’ve found. For you. For us.

    boo-radleys-62-hout-street-021-424-3040

I had heard about Boo Radley’s Bar and Bistro from a friend and I called them up to see if they were open. They were. I tingled with excitement and booked a table for me and The Muse. I was dying to see what a character from the book To Kill a Mockingbird reincarnated as a restaurant, looked like!

When we arrived I was finished! It wasn’t the checked floor, or the marble bar (with hooks!) and beveled mirrors. Nor was it the hat rack at the entrance. It was the BOOTHS! My God, they’ve got BOOTHS! I’ve been looking for a Cape Town restaurant with PROPER booths for most of my existence. And they’re the real deal – with real leather. Oh my!

    boo-radleys-cape-town-3
    Yes, you CAN be here

    boo-radleys-cape-town-1
    Mmmm, booths and cafe chairs..

    boo-radleys-cape-town-2
    Stop it now..

    Yip, they fucking nailed it!

I got the following from their PR people. Check it out:

Taking its cue from New York’s bistro-bar culture; newly opened Boo Radley’s offers a shot of nostalgia and a spoonful of style to Cape Town’s City restaurant offering.

The 50-seater assembly of leather banquets, café chairs and glossy wood tables are offset by a black and white checked floor and ceiling to street level windows. Palm fronds, leather-bound encyclopedia sets, heady black and white prints and a bluesy soundtrack set the scene for intimate dinners or jovial group gatherings.

An unfussy menu inspired by the famed grill rooms of cultural centres such as Paris, New York and Chicago, offers prime meat cuts, half free range chicken, seafood and pasta dishes. Staples include the mussels (served steamed in white wine, marscapone cheese, garlic and herbs), prawn cocktail (a pre-nouvelle cuisine classic served with avocado all year round), mac+cheese pot (a more-ish must), lamb cutlets (served with mushy peas), Bouillabaise (classic French seafood soup) and crème brulee ( a perpetual crowd-pleaser).

A lunchtime sandwich menu makes for a swift but satiating office escape and the old fashioned lemonade will wash that down nicely.

Boo Radley’s is owned by friends and business partners Jay Haupt and Alex George who are the duo behind Long Street’s Julep Bar. This is their “grown-up entertainment spot”, with junior partners Matt Finch (ex Ginja and Yum, Johannesburg as chef) and Conrad Joubert (ex-Julep as GM) bringing further enthusiasm and experience to the party. Naturally cocktails are a speciality but they are classics not contemporaries – although their famed Mojitos are very much on the menu.

Boo Radley’s forms part of a new stable of art, culture, food and entertainment venues on the city block that is bordered by Castle, Long and Hout. Central to this development is The Grand Daddy Hotel and The New Space Theatre. Boo Radley’s extends this creative experience with their own regular live music and a part-time staff of actors, comedians, performers and students. Boo’s theatre meals are precisely timed to ensure you make your show but return for coffee and desserts or a slow bottle of wine. Alternately, come post-theatre and enjoy a leisurely supper.

    Hey! Can you cope?

Using a mouthful of my unbelievably fresh linefish, I managed to leverage a slice of the Muse’s lamb cutlets which, as they say in the classics, “melted” in my mouth. As mentioned in the blurb, they’ve NAILED the “unfussy” food vibe, giving healthy portions and not trying to be clever with terms like “fusion” and sports car bills.

    Line Fish
    The Linefish

    Lamb Cutlets
    The Lamb Cutlets

It’s pretty tricky deciding on where to go out in Cape Town and we’re always looking for something new that isn’t trying to be clever. We normally choose from a list of three safe options. Well I’ve just added a fourth.

I’d advise you to get in there quick! – before it becomes Cape Town’s hottest ticket and you have to book a week in advance! The vibe is also so set for Winter. I had visions of the rain pouring outside, with gangsters and starlets dancing away next to the bar inside; pearls and lace STREWN everywhere! It’s so the vibe I’ve been looking for.

Go there now and if it is not awesome, I promise to sort it out for you.

Better yet, Why don’t you be smart and jump on their intro special they’re running for the rest of April?

Bring three guests or more to lunch* or dinner at Boo Radley’s and you, as the host, will receive your main meal on the house.

Click here to download the voucher , which you must print out and present to your waitron on arrival.

Boo Radleys is open, Tuesday to Saturday (Closed Monday evening), lunch and dinner (10 am -2am last kitchen orders 11pm).

  • SCHLEB PLEB – CAPE TOWN CELEBRITY SIGHTINGS – ZINEDINE ZIDANE

Zinedine Zidane was spotted at V&A Waterfront’s The Greek Fisherman on Friday.

    This, from Tony L:

    zidane-tony
    Zinedine “Zizou” Zinade
    Spotted at The Greek Fisherman

    ‘Sup Seth,

Had a mean lunch at the Greek Fisherman at the waterfront today. Zidane decided to make an appearance with his whole family. Oh please note the Mythos beer in the foreground. Imported from Greece!

    Cheers
    Tony

Those of you who don’t follow football, might still remember the name. Zidane is famous for headbutting an opponent in the chest (see that footage here) during the 2006 Football World Cup Final.

After consulting his assistants, the ref issued Zidane a red card in the 110th minute. It marked the fourteenth overall expulsion of Zidane’s career, and joined him with Cameroon’s Rigobert Song as the only players ever to be sent off during two separate World Cup tournaments. He also became the fourth player red-carded in a WC final, in addition to being the first sent off in extra time.

    What a legend.

Coincidentally, it was just this week that David Hasselhof threatened to headbutt fellow judge, Piers Morgan, on reality TV show, America’s Got Talent.

Have you spotted a Schleb mingling with the Plebs in Cape Town? Send your celebrity sightings to editor@2oceansvibe.com with the subject “Schleb Pleb” and a few lines describing where you were and the celebrity’s vibe.

  • CAMPS BAY AUCTION : SANDBAR ON VICTORIA ROAD UP FOR AUCTION

Whoah, there hasn’t been an auction on the Camps Bay strip since the place next door to Caprice, now occupied by The Grand Cafe, went for around R40 million sometime last year.

And now, the highly sought after building on the other side of The Grand Cafe is going under the hammer. I spotted them putting up the sign this morning as I dried off my glistening torso, following my morning swim in the mighty Atlantic Ocean.

    sandbar-auction
    Camps Bay Auction
Sandbar building on the Camps Bay Strip

Years of investments and successes and failures has proven that this end of the Camps Bay Strip (“Westside”) is in another league of cool, compared to the other end (“Eastside”). There are a number of contributing factors, not least of which being the fact that they (the Westside shop fronts) don’t have a view of the taxi rank and public toilets over the road.

That’s why, a few years ago, someone asked me what I think the three most important things are about buying real estate. I thought about it for a while and it became clear. So I said unto them, “location, location, location” – because, honestly, I think that is the most important thing.

Since then I’ve found a lot of people using this saying that I made up and I urge you to do the same, because I believe it’s true.

    layout

    “WESTSIDE”

This is prime real estate and I wouldn’t be surprised it got a similar price to its neighbour, what with 2010 around the corner blah, blah, etc. etc.

Come on, it’s a no brainer.

I got some information for you on the site.

    Check it out:

This fellow can be found at Vida e in Camps Bay.

    I enjoy him.

    photo
    Soso

Unlike his coffe (which is amazing), his name is “Soso .”

No, I am not spicing you.

I just hope that when people ask him what his name is, he holds out his hand flat and, before they shake, tilts it from side to side back-and-forth and says, “Soso.”

That’s what I would do to maintain awesomeness. But my name is not Soso.

Instead I just say, “Seth” and, with my mouth open and head nodding, I give a thrusting motion with my hips.

    That’s how I roll.

But, you know, each to their own.

  • THE 2009 SA BLOG AWARDS RESULTS

Well I’m still sort of recovering after Friday night’s South African Blog Awards, held at Chevelle club in Cape Town.

    saba logo

Well done to the organisers and sponsors (here) on the night and well done to all the nominees and bloggers that made it the success it was. I was also very pleased with the little angel bloggers running around – being all geek and sexy at the same time! What a great mix! It’s like a geek themed porno – but this time it’s real! I won’t even BEGIN to discuss those little angels in hot pants behind the VIP bar – so very naughty.

Thanks to Chris Rawlinson, Tyler and the team (in particular Miguel dos Santos behind the scenes who did a TON of backend work) for organising and handling the awards. They just keep better every year and this year was mind blowing – well done, guys.

  • TODAY IS NATIONAL CLEAVAGE DAY

With a maximum of 35 degrees today, God couldn’t have chosen a better day for National Cleavage day.

    Scarlett recognises National Cleavage Day

Yes, that’s exactly right! Thank you for that, Scarlett – I think you hit it spot on there! What a great example!

As with every National Cleavage Day, the angels out there are encouraged to send in cleavage shots, with the message (can be written on a post-it sticker) “Happy National Cleavage Day 2oceansvibe.”

The best entries will be posted on the site. Send to editor@2oceansvibe.com

I’m also informed that Caprice are doing something special today, sponsored by Lola’s Closet and Peroni. Click that Lola’s Closet link to see what you’re in for…

You are aware that the Caprice waitresses don’t struggle in that department, right?

  • YESTERDAY – A PICTORIAL

    I didn’t mind yesterday. Much.

I went for a swim in the Atlantic Ocean at, say, 8am. It was crispy.

I returned to The Safe House and listened to a bit of Bob Dylan (on vinyl – a birthday gift from my G-Man, The Dude and The TBG). After channeling Bob for a while, I was blessed with the arrival of her royal highness, Mavis, at around 09h30 (no rush). She made me some fruit with yoghurt. Nice.

    cappers
    Aaah, Cappers..

I popped down to Caprice at around 11 and chilled there until 13h00. I tucked into a few 2oceansvibe cocktails and thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment, which included this fellow who may or may not be a foreigner.

    Taking a leisurely stroll..

That was all a bit much and I returned to The Safe House. But not for long. It seemed the day was not to be wasted and The Photographer pulled round to fetch me, as we descended upon Little Beach, Bakoven.

Whilst we did remember to take a couple Jack Black beers down, I did forget my new Lizzard towel. So we managed to share The Photographers towel in the most non-gay way possible. You know, just burping and swearing every now and then, to bring across the element of man.

    ffff
    The Photographer won that game
    1-0

Yes, I think you will notice that the ocean was playing a game of lake-lake yesterday.

Funnily enough, I received an email on my phone at that exact point, from The Barndog, showing his view in Durban and commenting that his ocean can also play “lake-lake.” Good effort.

Speaking of good efforts, the sunset last night was, what we call, “acceptable.”

    Stunning.

But that was yesterday, and today is Friday – which is also nice.

But today is not only Friday, it is also your captain, John Smit’s birthday.

So, Barndog, from all of us at 2oceansvibe – happy birthday, my angel.

  • LONDON – NOW

Wow, this is completely different to what I’m doing.

London city today (G20 summit = protestor mayhem).

    This from Steve B:

    ubs
    Outside UBS – London city

    Seth,

Thought you may be interested to see what the London city boys are being subjected to. The soap-dodgers then broke windows at one of the bigger banks.

I heard rumour some of the lads were waving £10 and £20 notes out the windows at the protesters outside… Not cool behaviour – I see no point in poking the proverbial dog.

    Cheers!

    Steve

    Great email, Steve!

But, ummm, ja, I agree – not for me.

This is where I was after a little lunch at Caprice today.

  • NANDO’S AD FOR AMOR

I trust everyone has seen the Nando’s ad for Joost? I put it up two days ago (here) and still received it 20 times yesterday in my inbox (could we please address this issue, friends).

So anyway, someone has mocked-up ANOTHER Nando’s ad, addressed to Joost van der Westhuizen’s wife, Amor. This one is clearly a fake, but as I’m sure we all agree, there are pros and cons for both fake AND real.

    amore

    Naughty.

    Very good, but naughty.

    [thanks dale]

  • SETH IN A LEOPARD PRINT THONG ON A SCOOTER

Today is the last days of voting for the 2009 South African Blog Awards. It’s a great opportunity for those of you out there that haven’t voted, to do your thing. It is the only way to keep 2oceansvibe going. I can almost guarantee you that if you don’t vote, 2oceansvibe will be no more.

And, just in case you wanted some kind of incentive, here is the video I published just last week, telling you exactly what I will do, should 2oceansvibe win the best overall blog.

Oh, you missed that, did you? Don’t panic, here it is again:

    Would you like that?

    Ja, I bet you would.

  • GUYS, THE WEATHER IS FINE TODAY!

Why is everyone moaning about today’s shit weather? It’s not shit at all. It’s awesome. There is a VERY light cloud, and the ocean is playing a game of lake-lake. There is NOTHING wrong with that. Jesus.

    Check it out:

    IMG 6350

It’s a VERY thin cloud. Look at that blue towards the back. This shit will burn through. Even if it doesn’t, it’s dead calm. It’ll be sick on the strip – FACT.

[I wrote that AS Madonna's "Material Girl "kicked in on the iPod on random - weird - freaky!]

A lunch at Caprice wouldn’t hurt..

    xxx

    It’s your birthday
We gon’ party like it’s yo birthday
We gon’ sip Bacardi like it’s your birthday
And you know we don’t give a fuck
    It’s not your birthday!
