  • ZE PARLOTONES GIVE EXPLANATION TO ZE ALLEGATIONS

It didn’t take very long for a spoof video to appear, poking fun at the latest public debate surrounding The Partlotones‘ music video which shows the SA band singing for Germany to return from the World Cup as heroes.

With a KFC drum stick in one hand and a glass of (presumably) “Giant Mistake” red wine in the other, SA comedian, MC and speaker Don Packett went all out!

  • THE PARLOTONES INTERVIEW ON 2OCEANSVIBE RADIO – PODCAST READY TO DOWNLOAD

So we finally got to chat to Kahn Morbee, the lead singer of The Parlotones, following this week’s controversial public discussion about their latest music video. The video sees The Parlotones singing a new song, “Come Back As Heroes” to the German football players, in the middle of a football stadium jam-packed full of Germans waving German flags. But more to the point, and the part that a lot of people tend to forget (when comparing it to past examples where people have sung songs for other nations), this is during the World Cup which South Africa is hosting.

  • THE PARLOTONES LIVE ON 2OCEANSVIBE RADIO – FRIDAY

The 2010 World Cup is well underway and emotions are running high – and it’s not just to do with the football! The latest entertainment industry skandaal to circulate the internet and the airwaves is the case of SA band, The Parlotones. Their patriotism and levels of commercialism were questioned in a twitter/comment record-breaking article on 2oceansvibe, sensationally entitled “Parlotones Abandon South Africa And Support Germany.”

That’s when le shit hit le fan and, by the time the topic was discussed on 5FM, The Parlotones lead singer, Kahn Morbee had penned a response, entitled “Forever A South African.”

Comment and twitter mudslinging from both sides ensued and we realised there was only one thing left to do – get the boys on 2oceansvibe Radio!

  • KAHN FROM THE PARLOTONES RESPONDS

Today brought a multi-coloured shit-storm in the form of an article written on 2oceansvibe to do with the possibly confusing music video made by SA band The Parlotones. We suggested the band had gone too far in aligning themselves with another country, what with the song name being “Come Back As Heroes,” and the video depicting them in a stadium surrounded by German fans waving German Flags. In other words, it begged the question.

    The-Parlotones_H_s2CBbg_xkx_full.jpg

Kahn, the lead-singer of The Parlotones, responded:

    Forever a SOUTH AFRICAN

I do not normally reply to the hate because tastes do differ, but what is at question here is my patriotism, of which I have an over abundance of. So for once I will speak out and there will undoubtedly be opinions somehow laced with hate, a trait I do not possess and which considering our past, is a trait we should all attempt to extinguish. I do not care that some of you may call us corporate whores, as some of those very people spewing out that comment trundle 2 hours (there and back) through traffic to sit for 8-9 hours (sometimes more) beneath the neon lights of what? Ah ha…a corporate! Usually you’d be driving a branded car that you spend a significant chunk of your salary on for repayments, insurance, fuelling etc. All sold to you buy GIANT conglomerates. You’ll be Wearing clothing and cosmetic products from a corporate and later consuming the produce from a corporate, later settling in your home which technically a corporate bank or corporate hotel (SETH) owns! That’s right some of us work for a corporate, and some of us make a corporate work for us. Some of us do both, the question here is if you decided to name yourself GOD of the corporate whore comment, then are you truly an organic subsistence farming ‘walk everywhere’ hippy, deriving income from selling your handmade woven baskets? Either way Pick n Pay may come knocking after hearing about your awesome baskets and then what? We’re inadvertently endorsees in some form or another, some of us do it without knowing and others blatantly derive income from it SETH (your blog is laced with adverts for tyres etc.), why can’t we?

The truth is yes we did do a theme tune for a German broadcast company; the fact is that NOT for one second does anyone in the German public believe that we favour their country over ours. Here’s why,

  • PARLOTONES ABANDON SOUTH AFRICA AND SUPPORT GERMANY

Product endorsements and commercialisation aside; aligning yourself with another nation and singing for their victory in a tournament which is being held on your home soil (a tournament in which your own country is competing), may well be the final straw for Parlotones fans.

“Aligning” might be a bit tame. By the looks of their new website (the-parlotones.de), it seems as if the Parlotones have in fact defected to Germany. In their new song, which is widely celebrated in Germany, the ex-South African band sing for the German football side to “Come Back As Heroes.”

It is not known when or why their new affiliation came about, but here is the bombshell video that has left SA fans completely bewildered.

Hey, did you get tickets to the Parlotones Germany game?
    No, it was sold out..

    Wow! I’m speechless..

Commericalisation is a part of business growth and, whilst 2oceansvibe can be teased and get a bit of flack here and there for promoting various brands and products, one thing stands true – these are products and services that we believe in and want to use and choose to use. Some of them pay, some of them don’t. It is common knowledge, for example, that I only use Ponds face wash, and they don’t pay me a red cent.

Be careful not to confuse this with “selling out.” Selling out is if I accepted R1 million to endorse and feature Crocs shoes on 2oceansvibe – a product that I have never and never will like (except on the feet of chefs and kids). And that’s exactly why you have never seen it advertised on 2oceansvibe. It is this very reason that sees 2oceansvibe often turning down brands and services which we do not believe in – something a lot of readers out there are unaware of.

All of that said, if Germany knocked on my suite at the Cape Royale hotel, and offered me R3 million (or any figure for that matter) to support Germany winning the World Cup, would I do it?

    No, I wouldn’t.

Check out the Parlotones German website here and find out more about their song made in support of Germany bringing home the cup.

    * Kahn, the lead-singer of The Parlotones has subsequently responded to this article. You can see his responce here.
