Maybe I will be allowed to drive through red traffic lights if I had a bike mounted to my Vespa?

It is quite alarming, the number of people out there that are “very keen to get a scooter” – but they never get their ass into gear. They realise what a pleasure it is to drive in the city – skipping the traffic and parking next to front doors and beaches, with no car guards to deal with. Do you know how hilarious it is leaving your place at twenty to four and walking into a bank at ten to four? Ten minutes, door-to-door (literally) and no parking hassles. It’s too easy. You might as well rob the place while you’re there – they’ll never get near you in peak hour traffic.

Look, I’m not condoning armed robbery here. Shit, did I just say “armed?” Sorry, let’s get back to the point.

Two adventurers proved that Africa can be tamed – on the back of a 150cc scooter!

A photojournalist and web manager have proven that a trip across Southern Africa can be achieved on a Vespa, with grace and ease.

Having already tested the Vespa LX 150 on trips in Europe, including Italy to London and London to Helsinki, Agnieszka Flak and Alberto Rinaldi tackled Southern Africa on their chariot of choice. They completed a trip of some 9 000 kilometres, from South Africa through Botswana, Zambia, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique and back to South Africa. And if all goes to plan, Agnieszka and Alberto will complete an African west coast trip from Johannesburg, through Morocco to Spain and Italy.

Averaging around 80km/h, the pair nailed between 4 00km and 6 00km a day, depending on the quality of the fuel and the conditions of the roads, which included some hair raising off-road and night-time expeditions.

“Even though many people could not believe we were on a trip across Southern Africa on such a small scooter, with such tiny wheels, they were quite taken with the Vespa. We had many offers to buy the scooter. One guy, at the Zambian border, offered us his car in exchange for our Vespa. When we declined, he offered us 20 cows!”

What a lag!

There’s a cess-pit of bad football films out there.

Of course, the discerning viewer will recognise that Any Given Sunday rises above the sentiment and excrement that makes up 90% of the movies in this drama.

It’s a great film. There’s plenty of old-school Pacino filth and grit in there.

And there’s that one, iridescent moment that builds slowly without you even knowing it, until BAM, it’s there, and you know you’re looking at the pinnacle of the movie.

You know what I’m talking about. It’s the Inches Speech. The one that film critics praise as the most convincing Hollywood pep-talk on celluloid.

I found myself absolutely killing it outside the vida e in Green Point this weekend, and I realised that I still haven’t told you about my new toy, the Vespa GTS 250 i.e. And that “i.e.” at the end doesn’t mean “id est,” as you often see in english sentences, it refers rather to the fact that this beast is fuel injected. Yes, you heard me correctly – fuel injected. If it did mean “i.s.” as you know it, then the word “awesome” would be written immediately after it. The Vespa GTS 250 i.e. awesome.

And this is not my first scooter, either. I’ve been through it all and am more than qualified to debate the two sides. Two sides, you ask? You know what I’m talking about..

Let me tell you what I experienced and what I’ve learnt.

I won’t rubbish the name of the scooter brand I had before this, but let’s just say the name rhymes with “euro” and “jet.” I paid just over 10 grand for that bike and I can definitely recommend it – if you’re looking for a disposable bike. I did a few thousand kays on it and the bike is finished. Seriously – it’s history. And that’s a bike that lives inside a garage.

Vespas, on the other hand, start at around the 30 grand mark for a demo model and you can immediately feel the difference. The first time I tried one (a Vespa) was actually when I fulfilled a promise to the 2oceansvibe readers, and drove on a scooter down the Camps Bay strip in a leopard-print G-string.

We’re pretty blown away by the response to the “Seth Song” we’ve been playing fairly regularly, over at 2oceansvibe Radio. It’s not only a damn funny tune, but I tell you what – it’s got the heads bopping too! Apparently The Assembly lost their minds to it last Saturday!

A stunning day had by all! Andrew from the Hi-Five Scooter Club organised a scooter rally that took place on voting day (GO DOLPHINS!), yesterday, which kicked off at the Waterfront Vespa Shop, next to the Caltex station. A rally that was put together to highlight the perfect match that is scooters and Cape Town, as well as the earth friendliness nature of scooters as a mode of transport, versus cars (sis!).

Everyone assembled at, say, 12ish and it was quite apparent that the reporters from Die Burger and the Cape Times knew about the leopard print thong scooter streak I had promised. As a reminder to those of you who have just tuned in, I promised (in a video that has been watched now 40,000 times) to my stunning fantastic loyal readers that I would ride my scooter through the Camps Bay Strip with a leopard print thong , should I win the 2009 South African Blog Awards *cough* which I duly did.

And so, of course, the time came for me to “de-robe.” Which I did outside (what was) Carlucci’s in Bantry Bay. The FULL rally stopped to allow me a completely non-private moment. Thank God I had a drag on a pinner earlier and the full impact of the moment didn’t set in. (And thank God I gave a little trim the evening before).

We cruised on past parliament (giving the obligatory election day toot-toot) and ended up at Speedway Cafe in Gardens where the van der Spuy brothers supplied generous pints of Jack Black beer! It was all just too wonderful to behold!

And so, for now, quietly enjoy this little sunset on the night of the scooter rally. The day I wore a leopard print thong. The day of the South African General Election, 2009.

Think back 70 or 75 years to a time when design began to break away from the traditional and elaborate rationalism that ensued for hundreds of years. As the styles of Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Streamline and Zigzag Moderne emerged after the Industrial Revolution, designers as well as consumers fully embraced the Age of the Machine. Shiny chrome surfaces lay across curving forms or over expansive horizontal planes and glorified a dynamic new world on the move.

And suddenly, design was muted as World War II approached. Inspiration was buried away, along with some innovative and visually stunning design work. Skip ahead to 2005 when some curious members of BMW Classic opened a box and found the R7 bike 75 assembled – although not in shining condition. The engine was corroded, the metalwork was in dire shape, the battery was unusable, but the opportunity for restoration could not be ignored.

Various specialists at the BMW workshop discovered the original design drawings in the archive collections and conjured up the ghosts from Streamline Moderne’s past. Missing parts were sourced, others were rebuilt, the chrome was polished and the frame was painted black. And the final test, retuning the 1934 BMW motorcycle to the street, proved to be worth the wait nearly three quarters of a century later. – Andrew J Wiener
