Then you have Bob Hewitt, who has somewhat tainted that image, and now we can add Joshua Chetty to that list.

The 21-year-old was this week banned for life from professional tennis for match-fixing, with this below from Tennis.com:

The Tennis Integrity Unit says 21-year-old Joshua Chetty offered a player $2,000 to underperform in a singles match and $600 in a doubles match during a Futures event in Stellenbosch, South Africa, in November 2015. The approached player, who wasn’t identified, rejected the offers and reported the matter to the TIU.

Oh Joshua, you’ve really botched this one mate. Maybe he was beginning to get a little desperate, given that his world ranking currently sits at 1 875.

Anyone else think he looks like a bit of a twat?

tennischetty22

IOL with Tennis South Africa’s reaction:

The lifetime ban from all professional tennis applies with immediate effect and means the player is not allowed to compete in, or attend, any tournament or event organised or sanctioned by the governing bodies of the sport. President of Tennis South Africa (TSA) Gavin Crookes said TSA supports this decision unreservedly.

“The maintenance of the integrity of our sport is paramount, David Haggerty, the president of the International Tennis Federation has made this one of his core objectives over the next three years, this likewise is one of my core objectives for the coming three years as president of Tennis South Africa.

All stakeholders need to know that the running of our sport is above reproach and that any transgression by any player, official or administrator will be dealt with harshly.”

Thanks for coming Joshua – game, set, match.

UFC 205 is being billed as one of the most exciting line-ups in recent history, and the headline fight is between Irish scoundrel Conor McGregor and Eddie Alvarez.

Now we all know that pre-match press conferences are a farce these days, aimed at drumming up hype and selling pay-per-view packages, but there’s something about Conor that isn’t just for the cameras.

Settle in and enjoy the show – I think the wheels properly come off around the two-minute mark, and I also like the exchange at around the 6:15 mark.

Sloane Hunter <![CDATA[Saving To Buy A Home? You Should Know About All The ‘Hidden’ Costs]]> http://www.2oceansvibe.com/?p=318988 2016-09-30T11:42:03Z 2016-09-30T13:00:18Z In due time you will probably grow tired of paying rent.

It’s money that just disappears into someone else’s pocket, and all you get in return is a roof over your head for a month.

So you start saving, in the hopes of putting down an ample deposit for your first house.

But listen up, buddy, the cost of your house is not the only thing you will be paying for. It is imperative you realise the hidden costs associated with your “grown up” achievement, or else you might just be hanging on for dear life.

BusinessTech was kind enough to list the really important costs that you might not be aware of, just in case you’re going head first into buying a house.

Utility fees

You know that water and electricity you use every month? Maybe you have a landline, too. Well, you’re going to pay for using those services. Costs range from area to area as well as systems in place, like whether or not you have a prepaid meter.

Tip: Monitor your habits to curb costs.

Rates, taxes and levies

Those damn rates are pretty much like paying a monthly rental fee. Based on the value of your property, the rates of your house covers the cost of sewerage facilities, road and street light maintenance and refuse collection.

While rates are calculated according to your property type, taxes rely on the value of your property.

Levy fees apply to any property bought within a complex or building, such as a townhouse or a flat and include running costs for the complex, like insurance, repairs and general maintenance.

Tip: These costs are available to you before you buy, so do your research.

Homeowner’s insurance

Covering your property against loss and structural damage, homeowners insurance is mandatory when you apply for a home loan. Monthly premium depends on the loan amount and can be included in monthly bond repayments.

Tip: Shop around – competitive prices are out there.

Tip II: Homeowners insurance doesn’t cover what’s on the inside, so you need to get that, too.

So, are you going to buy or rent? That’s for you to do decide, but I would have to say if you have a stable income, get on that buying mission and invest in some property.

Good luck out there!

Of course tales of Trump’s jibes at women aren’t exactly new, but this below would be the first time I can remember seeing him dressed up as a beauty queen himself.

The New Yorker have gone all out there, with artist Barry Bitt explaining his drawing to Yahoo:

[He] told the publication that he was inspired to create the drawing after watching the Republican presidential nominee spar against Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton during the first presidential debate on Monday, September 26. Of all Trump’s controversial attributes, Blitt, 58, said, his misogyny “might just be his Achilles’ heel.”

trumppnewy

Fat shaming isn’t cool, unless Donald happens to be the target. A little more on the drama surrounding Miss Universe 1992, Alicia Machado:

Trump’s insults about her weight contributed to her battles with anorexia and bulimia. “My self-esteem [was] on the floor,” she [said]…

While Trump told Howard Stern in the ‘90s that Machado gained 55 pounds after her big win, she has insisted that she only put on a total of 18 pounds. During her reign, the ex–Celebrity Apprentice host infamously forced Machado to work out in front of reporters and camera crews.

And on we go…

Heists don’t come much bigger than the Van Gogh museum raid, the Amsterdam establishment hit back in 2002.

Amongst the stolen items were two Van Gogh paintings, but now police have recovered the work from some Naples-based Mafia.

Yeah, it does sound like something out of the movies. First let’s deal with how the art came to be stolen, with this from the BBC:

The theft of the two works, described as priceless, led to criticism of security at the world’s major art museums.

The thieves broke into the museum through the roof during the night of 6-7 December 2002 and used sledgehammers to break a first-floor window.

They took the paintings off the walls of the main exhibition hall. Experts were baffled at the time of the theft because guards had been on patrol and infra-red security systems were in place.

Neither work was insured at the time, and both were on loan to the Van Gogh museum from the Dutch government. Two Dutch citizens were jailed for theft but always maintained their innocence.

No insurance? Come now, you really need to be prepared for the worst-case scenario.

After what police described as a “massive, continuing investigation” by Italian prosecutors and organised crime officials, the work was finally found over in Italy.

Painting A – Seascape at Scheveningen

vangoghreturns

[It] was one of only two seascapes he painted while he lived in the Netherlands.

It shows a foaming, stormy sea and thundery sky, and was painted in 1882 while he was staying in The Hague.

Painting B – Congregation Leaving the Reformed Church at Nuenen

vangoghreturns2

[It] was painted for Van Gogh’s mother, but also partly for his father, who had become a pastor at the church in 1882. When his father died in 1884, Van Gogh added churchgoers including a few women wearing shawls used for mourning.

Van Gogh, helping street cred since the 19th century.

He died at the age of 84 in 2011, and in the years that followed hundreds (more than 450 by some estimates) of people have come forward with tales of his indiscretions.

Back in 2000, when nerdy doccie maker Louis Theroux interviewed him, rumours had swirled but he had yet to be formally charged. Not that it wasn’t obvious that he had multiple screws loose, with this below from the Telegraph:

The famously tracksuited TV presenter and philanthropist revealed that he called his bed “The Altar”, chose not to own an oven for fear of attracting women into his life and kept one of his homes as a shrine to his late mother. Theroux challenged Savile over the rumours of paedophilia that quietly swirled around the Jim’ll Fix It host, but they were rebuffed. Little more was said of it.

Here’s a little edit of the entire interview with some pearlers from Jimmy. Watch until the end, that’s when the paedo bomb gets dropped:

During the full interview here’s what he had to say about the allegations:

Savile explained that he lied and said he “hated children” in an attempt to kill the tabloid rumours that he was a paedophile. “Obviously I don’t hate them but we live in a very funny world and it’s easier as a single man to say, ‘I don’t like children’, because that puts a lot of salacious tabloid people off the hunt.”

Rather than deny any paedophilia, Savile went on the defence, saying: “How does anybody know whether I am or not? Nobody knows whether I am. Or not. So I can tell from experience when they say, ‘Oh, all those children on Jim’ll Fix It’, I say, ‘I hate them’.”

“That’s my policy. That’s the way it goes. And it’s worked. A dream. It’s worked a dream.”

It helps when your employers turn a blind eye to the evidence, something the BBC were criminally guilty of during his time with the company. Following a Scotland Yard investigation into the matter, Operation Yewtree, four other male entertainers were arrested for sex crimes.

A little too late, me thinks.

Anyway, Wheels24 did a little survey with its readers, asking them to vote for the city and province in South Africa with the “worst” taxi drivers.

To many, “worst” implies complete disregard for the law.

52 907 people participated in the online survey and the majority voted Johannesburg has having the worst taxi drivers, with 64% of the votes. Here are the final results:

Johannesburg 64% – 15437 votes
Cape Town 12% – 2795 votes
Pretoria 11% – 2651 votes
Durban 10% – 2375 votes
Port Elizabeth 2% – 541 votes
Polokwane 2% – 473 votes

I don’t believe this has much ground to stand on, as you can’t vote if you have never experienced another cities’ taxis, which I doubt everyone has.

Anyway, when it came down to provinces, of course Gauteng claimed that title, too:

Gauteng 67% – 19 120 votes
KwaZulu-Natal 13% – 3851 votes
Western Cape 12% – 3531 votes
Eastern Cape 5% – 1374 votes
Limpopo 3% – 758 votes

To make you feel a little better, here’s one motorist putting a taxi driver in his place and it’s pretty satisfying to watch:

Featuring steamy images of hunks striking homoerotic poses surrounded by religious iconography, the annual calendar is now in its fifth edition.

P.I.L.F, by the way, stands for ‘Priests I’d Like to F*ck’ and the following images are definitely not for the religious-sensitive.

While the calendar may have a tendency to offend, the team behind it says it acts as a protest against homophobia in the Orthodox Church, to which “nearly 90 percent of Romanians belong.” It aims to rather celebrate “diversity, equality and freedom.”

Magdalena De Iona, who is the press representative for the calendar, told Huffington Post that:

The [Orthodox] church has lost its way and is desperately trying to prevent hundreds of millions of people living in modern societies that respect human rights. We’d like to think that our art could empower people to question traditional forms of authority.

This year, some of proceeds will go to a local Romanian NGO, Orasul Meu (or “My City, My Colours”), who focus on providing healthcare for disadvantaged youth.

You Should Get This Anti-Refugee Aerosol Spray]]> http://www.2oceansvibe.com/?p=318878 2016-09-30T09:43:47Z 2016-09-30T09:30:10Z Since the Syrian migrant issue began to take a toll on those living in Europe, a lot of focus has been on the awful behaviour of countries such as Hungary and people like Trump.

Many reporters and celebrities have taken extra care to highlight the horrid situations many of the refugees and asylum seekers are leaving, in an effort to lessen the harsh treatment they receive upon their arrival in a foreign country.

Well, Denmark has kind of missed all the attention, unless you’re talking about it being the happiest country in the world. But here’s what you might have not known about the Danes, according to The Daily Beast:

Denmark is a country where the parliament actually voted to seize certain high-value items from them to help offset the costs of their housing and health care. It is also a country where it is legal to bounce migrants and refugees out of nightclubs just for being migrants and refugees.

Now, the next step for right-wing Danes has been to hand out a refugee-repellent product, aptly named Asyl Spray. It was distributed in the southeast port city of Haderslev last weekend by the Danskernes Parti political group, and promises to “repel refugees” in a “legal” and “effective” way.

49172068-cached

Basically a pepper spray, the party’s leader Daniel Carlsen, 26, came up with the idea and was shocked at the negative response to it. He told CNN:

I cannot see how it is racist. Pepper spray is illegal here so we wanted to figure out a way for Danish people, in particular women, to protect themselves. It’s obviously not the ideal situation.

In the long run we want to repatriate the migrants, we want to repatriate non-Westerners in general, that is in the long run. In the short run we want to provide solutions to make life better and safer for the Danish people

Although the UN issued a statement of sheer disgust, Carlsen does not care:

We are tackling an actual problem in our society, where many Danes feel unsafe.

It is a disgrace to Denmark and Europe as a whole that an organisation like this is promoting mass immigration to Europe, and it will destroy Europe. We are not saying that migrants are all rapists, but the problem with mass migration is the mass, and because of the mass it will in time replace the indigenous people of Europe.

This isn’t the first time Denmark has been under criticism for its treatment of refugees. Last year the country placed an ad in a newspaper based in Lebanon, announcing the tightening of its laws:

cov13zsuaaahif_

Hungary, notorious for blocking refugees, also had a go when a mayor put this video on YouTube, serving as a warning to locals:

And Sweden sent a message set along to some heavy techno beat:

And you thought South Africa had some xenophobic tendencies. Yoh.

It will be his 52nd appearance in the Tri-Nations / Rugby Championship, which extends his lead over second-placed Jean de Villiers (50).

It will also be his 121st appearance in the green and gold, the most by a winger, although Victor Matfield still leads the way with 127.

More records – of course there are. Here’s Sport24:

Habana, the oldest player in Saturday’s squad at 33 years, three months and 19 days, is the all-time leading Bok try-scorer against the Wallabies with nine tries, as well as the all-time leading Bok try-scorer at Loftus with eight.

Habana, currently plying his trade for Franch Top 14 side Toulon, will have fond memories of Loftus, having played 61 times for the Bulls in Super Rugby.

Habana will be looking to add to his total Test try tally of 66 – which is a record for a tier 1 player.

66 tries is one helluva total, but there are some that stand out from the crowd. Below is a highlights reel of sorts, although I recommend watching it on mute to avoid the truly awful soundtrack.

And this one, that deserves a video all of it’s own. Eat dirt, George Gregan:

As for the records Allister Coetzee might break? Playing the most backline players out of position…

The rest of us just look on wide-eyed, Trevor Noah included, because his team did a little digging and what they found is a few more examples of abhorrent behaviour.

We’ll let the Daily Beast set the scene:

Donald Trump is, without question, the most misogynistic presidential candidate in modern American history. He views women as mere objects—even his own baby daughter. He possesses a pathological need to project his own body insecurities onto women, grading and ridiculing their figures while he himself has been considerably overweight for the last 20 years.

There are a number of cringeworthy moments, but pay particular attention to when he talks about his then one-year-old daughter (2:50):

That bit at the end about a pig being slaughtered – well done Trevor, that’s a mic drop moment right there.

No, I am not talking about wearing one at an event for singletons, but rather while you catch a train or bus.

That’s what Jonathan Dunne did.

On Wednesday, a whole lot of badges and pieces of paper appeared across the London Underground. The badges had “Tube Chat?” written on them, while the pieces of paper read:

Have a chat with your fellow travellers. Wear this badge to let others know you’re interested. You’ll benefit from a daily chat. Start using it today.

Can you just imagine what Londoners thought of that? They can hardly crack a nod, let alone a “Hello”.

screen-shot-2016-09-30-at-8-19-24-am

Dunne, who is American and hails from Colorado, currently works for the National Healthcare System (NHS) in the UK, and began handing out the badges on Wednesday morning. He was, however, not surprised by the negative response:

It’s been wild. I handed them out yesterday. This morning, there were two tweets about it, mocking me, and then I went to a meeting, got back and the world had gone crazy.

You’re so compartmentalised here, you sort of go into a trance on your way to work. It’s not the same as in New York. New Yorkers, even though they have a reputation of being brusque, tend to be a bit friendlier.

Yes, the hashtag #tube_chat was born – which is how the world went “crazy” – along with a dedicated Twitter and Instagram account, and the news spread like wildfire.

The Metro’s headline summed up the general feeling pretty well: “Panic Across London as People On Tubes are Actually Asked To Talk.”

Of course, meme after meme can be found on the hashtag’s Twitter search. Here are a few of the best:

South Africans aren’t as flag-obsessed as our friends over in America, where many porches are adorned with the red, white and blue, but we do take a certain pride in waving our brightly-coloured rainbow effort for all to see.

Now we’ve taking that pride to the next level with the Giant Flag project, who have undertaken to build a massive flower display in The Valley of Desolation, just outside Graaff Reinet, that will be visible from space.

Here’s a little from BusinessTech:

It will consist of as many as 2.5 million red, yellow, blue and green desert plants, including cacti and spekboom.

The flag’s black triangular space will contain a 4-megawatt solar-panel field, generating electricity for the region.

Once completed – hopefully in 2017 – the flag will span the size of 66 soccer fields, will supply power to the equivalent of 4,000 homes, create jobs for 700 people, and boost tourism by as much as 25%…

The project has a projected cost of $12 million, with funding already generated by sponsorships, partnerships and donations from local governments, private companies, nonprofits and individuals.

The organisers of the the project have also started crowdsourcing – asking people to “adopt a plant” for R100 per plant. The project’s website indicates that the team is 25% toward its 1st threshold goal of $2.5 million.

We now have our first satellite image of the outlines in place:

wavesaflag2

And those outlines again, this picture from a little lower taken last month:

When it all comes together here’s what one artist believes those from space will be gazing down on:

People are a few glasses of wine in, one thing leads to another, someone storms off before dessert is served.

No worries, I’ll have yours too.

You can add politics and money to the list of touchy subjects, because those also tend to get people hot under the collar.

Thankfully the company I keep tend to agree that global warming and the threat of climate change are real concerns, and that we should be doing something about it before it’s too late (if it isn’t already).

We know Leo DiCaprio is involved with two things at present, hooking up with supermodels and raising awareness around climate change, and we’ve given the first of those interests plenty of coverage.

Let’s talk about his new doccie, Before The Flood, and shine some light on the second. Some insight from TIME:

Alongside DiCaprio, who produced and narrated the film, the production team lists several Hollywood hard-hitters including actor-director Fisher Stevens, who produced Oscar-winning documentary The Cove, and executive producer Martin Scorsese, who directed DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street…

The film also features appearances and interviews from big names including President Obama, Elon Musk and Pope Francis.

“Climate change is the most critical and urgent problem facing our world today, and it must be a top issue for voters this Election Day,” said DiCaprio…“Fisher and I set out to make a film that not only educates people about the challenges we face if we fail to act, but one which also shows the solutions we can implement if we can find the political will to do so.”

You can bet the climate change deniers are going to have a field day shooting this one down. Maybe they can join forces with the flat earth peeps, together burning the mountains of scientific evidence that render their stances completely irrational.

Over to you, Oscar winner Leo:

The doccie will be officially released on October 21, although there will be a special screening at the White House on October 3.

In the mean time, why don’t you look at making a few simple, cost effective changes that will have a positive result for generations to come? Find out about our new eco-friendly partners, Sustainable.co.za, HERE.

You do you.

It’s something my boyfriend says to me every time I tell him I am going for dinner with a friend, or to Fiction with my sister. It’s translates to “I am upset, but it’s your life so live it.”

And PUMA’s latest campaign featuring Cara Delevingne sends that exact message to each and every women, without being upset about it though.

Delevingne has been hinting at the #DoYou campaign for a while now, and recently revealed what it is about:

Writing “MINE” across her stomach with black marker, here’s another image from the campaign:

screen-shot-2016-09-29-at-10-04-17-amThis comes after Delevingne’s two year hiatus from the modelling world – but who could say no to representing a campaign aimed at empowering women and their bodies, especially when it’s directed by Rihanna?

Most of PUMA’s most recent campaigns have focused on the strength of women and previously included the New York City Ballet and Rihanna’s PUMA x FENTY release featuring Naomi Campbell.

And now we have Cara in the mix:

Ugh, the love I have for these women! Now you go do you, girl.

Starring Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron, Jason Statham, Edward Norton, Seth Green, and Mos Def to name a few, fans of the 1969 original were not disappointed.

Let’s just hope they feel the same about what’s to come, however.

Hollywood’s intense lack of creativity has recently seen a spate of series adapted from very successful films, like Fargo and Limitless, and now they plan to turn The Italian Job into one as well.

italianjob01

Well, The Verge’s Michael Liptak is very excited – so much so that he thought he would pen a love letter to the film franchise and, in his eye, its only star:

I fell completely in love with both Italian Job films, but not for the usual reasons. They’re certainly not the greatest heist films ever put to the silver screen, nor are they particularly notable when it comes to plot or their acting.

What they do have is those plucky cars at their center. They’re small, fast, and seem to exude personality. We MINI drivers often wave as we pass by one another, recognising that we’ve bought into a small, almost cult-like community of motorists.

I’ve thought a lot about my relationship with driving and the experience of watching these films over the years. I’ve jokingly called the 2003 reboot a glorified car commercial, but in some ways, it was the best sort of advertisement for the car. The movie was a bit of a love letter to the car, and it showed off its plucky energy as Charlie Croker and sped through Italy or LA to steal a whole bunch of gold.

Chances are, I’ll be entirely let down by this new show, but hey, as long as there’s some sort of implausible car chase involving MINI Coopers, I’ll be happy.

And there you have it.

Here’s a reminder of the 2003 version, and if you’re inspired to get your hands on a MINI just email editor@2oceansvibe.com – subject ‘The Italian Job’ – and we’ll hook you up with a racy discount.

Again.

From the likes of Taylor Hill and Adriana Lima, the video takes place on the streets of New York and has the models wearing spring’s biggest looks from the runway.

Vogue has used the moment to promote the various fashion designers, and each model has their own specific feature in the video.

Here’s a snap of Vogue’s Instagram account:

Yesterday he once again implored students to protest peacefully, but this time he had some damning implications to help boost his plea.

We’re not talking about the boets and boetesses who may have to cancel their end of year trip to Bali with the crew either, with TimesLive reporting:

If students protests don’t cease by the end of next week the entire academic year could be lost, resulting in dire consequences for students and the country, [said Max]…

“What happens for the country if we do that? Well, for example, there would be about 2400 health science graduates in the country – about 400 would come from UCT – who are all due to start their internship or community service on January 1.

“The health service is absolutely dependent on those junior doctors, physiotherapists, psychologists and the people who are currently interns would have left – gone into other jobs, gone into senior positions or out of the sector. There would be a serious risk for public health sector collapse,” he said.

That’s just scratching the surface, of course, but the same rings true for other would-be graduates who have jobs in the public sector lined up.

Here’s Max talking about the academic year at UCT and fielding questions:

What is up for debate is just how stinkin’ rich, because over the past year or so Trump has talked up his wealth to varying degrees.

For example, when he filed his financial disclosure with the Federal Election Commission this year, his campaign said he was worth in excess of $10 billion.

Slightly more trustworthy a source is business magazine Forbes, whose findings BBC have covered:

[They] reappraised the Republican White House hopeful’s personal wealth and found it has haemorrhaged $800m since 2015.

Forbes now estimates the real estate magnate’s net worth at $3.7bn (R51 billion).

The publication said the decrease was mainly due to the “softening” of the New York property market.

The magazine assessed 28 of Trump’s New York buildings, finding that 18 of them had declined in value. How much of that $800 million loss is down to his political campaign, then?

He has invested about $50m of his own money so far in his presidential bid, but has clawed some of that back by, for example, locating his offices in Trump Tower and billing his campaign for rent.

trumpowealthdown2

Forbes estimates his controversial remarks about Mexican immigrants during his campaign launch cost him about another $100m in lost deals with NBC Universal, Univision and Macy’s, among others.

Of course nailing down someone’s exact worth isn’t an agreed upon science, which is why Forbes’ $3,7 billion figure isn’t fact. Given that Bloomberg says $3 billion and Fortune $3,9 billion, I think we can safely assume it’s far lower than the double digits he was punting months ago.

Then again Trump’s estimate includes valuing his personal brand at $3,3 billion alone, and critics also accuse him of ‘routinely overstating his income by conflating business revenue and income’.

The circus rolls on.

The first season budget alone is around the $100 million mark, and in the pipeline is six full seasons comprising 60 episodes.

Initially at least the series has been written and directed by Peter Morgan, who was involved with The Queen movie back in 2006, with more from Wired:

The first season takes place in the 1940s, as Elizabeth (Claire Foy, from Wolf Hall) prepares to marry Prince Philip (Matt Smith, ofDoctor Who) and assume her eventual role as Queen. The cast also includes Jared Harris as King George VI, Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret, and John Lithgow as Winston Churchill.

It’s a significant investment, especially given that the series debuts during the same year as the tonally different but similarly exorbitant The Get Down. But historical dramas do well in the United Kingdom, and the Royal Wedding and subsequent royal births ignited the interest of Anglophiles across America. So Netflix has that going for it, plus the incredibly compelling life of the longest-reigning monarch in England’s history. The 10-episode first season of The Crown debuts on the streaming service Nov. 4.

Not really my cup of tea, but here’s the trailer anyway:

Of course certain names come to mind – Dischem and Clicks being two – but some of our bigger supermarket chains also have their own in-store dispensaries.

So where are you getting the best bang for your buck? The team at BusinessTech are on the case:

[They] compared 10 common over the counter pharmaceutical products that cater for a wide range of ailments from five major pharmacies.

Promotional discounts were not taken into consideration, though it should be noted that stores hold specials on a regular basis – often seasonally, to cater for associated ailments.

Looking at the selected basket, it’s clear that prices for medical OTC [over the counter] medical products stay pretty much in range across the board, though each store has its own highs and lows.

When you take the total cost of those 10 purchases here’s how they stack up:

Let me give you a relatable example: Maybe you have a laptop or cellphone that has an issue with overheating. Like most technology, elements are required to keep the machines cool and the bigger the machine is, and the more it works, the more airflow you need.

Imagine how much air conditioning Facebook’s data centre would need if it was in California, especially since it’s housing not only all your photographs but an increasing amount of videos.

So, instead of building the data centre in a location that would require energy-guzzling air conditioners, Facebook built massive fans to pull in the frosty winds of the Arctic Circle.

Yes, indeed.

Mark Zuckerberg has been sharing photographs (on Facebook) of the company’s technology, and the first in the series is a photo essay of the Luleå facility’s design.

They are epic – here’s Zuckerberg’s intro:

Over the next few months, I’m going to start posting some rare photos of the most advanced technology Facebook is building around the world.

We’re starting deep in the forests of northern Sweden with the Luleå data center. It’s a key part of our global infrastructure, and it uses a variety of local natural resources to increase efficiency and save power.

The small town of Luleå is less than 70 miles south of the Arctic Circle, and it’s typically pretty cold. The temperature in the area is below 50 degrees most days, so we use large fans to pull in the outside air to naturally cool the thousands of warm servers that line the center’s broad hallways. A dozen hydro-electric plants operate on nearby rivers, providing a reliable and renewable power source. The whole system is 10% more efficient and uses almost 40% less power than traditional data centers.

Inside, the main building is the size of six football fields. Nearly all the technology in the facility, from the servers to the power distribution systems, is based on Open Compute Project designs as well.

You probably don’t think about Luleå when you share with friends on Facebook, but it’s an example of the incredibly complex technology infrastructure that keeps the world connected. I’m looking forward to sharing photos of more of our advanced technology soon.

Are you ready? Here they are:

14462809_10103136676432081_4482533052638067228_n

Luleå is a small coastal town just south of the Arctic Circle, and near the top of the world. It’s surrounded by dense forests and icy rivers.

14440633_10103136675873201_6012411229515107747_n

The main data hall is so big that engineers move around on scooters.

I love this shot because it looks like a sci-fi movie. These enormous fans draw in the outside air to cool the tens of thousands of servers in the data hall. In the winter, when temperatures plunge to -30 degrees the situation is reversed, and the heat from the servers warm the massive buildings.

I love this shot because it looks like a sci-fi movie. These enormous fans draw in the outside air to cool the tens of thousands of servers in the data hall. In the winter, when temperatures plunge to -30 degrees the situation is reversed, and the heat from the servers warm the massive buildings.

14470377_10103136675758431_9005661492814123754_n

About 150 people work here, but the data halls are frequently empty. Because of the simplified design, we need only one technician for every 25,000 servers.

14441138_10103136675893161_8227743870037033580_n

The equipment is reduced to its basics so it runs cooler. It can also be easily accessed and repaired quickly. A few years ago, it took an hour to repair a server hard drive. At Luleå, that’s down to two minutes.

14463144_10103136675563821_5871425778878901352_n

Old and obsolete hard drives are crunched, forever protecting privacy. Christer Jonsson is in charge of this important task. “I must be very careful,” he says.

Pop over HERE to check out the rest of the album, which includes artistic photographs of the architecture as well as people on the team.

It’s pretty sweet, I won’t lie, just a little bit isolated for my liking.

Sloane Hunter <![CDATA[Attention All “Fashion Bloggers” – Vogue Hates You]]> http://www.2oceansvibe.com/?p=318612 2016-09-29T10:28:58Z 2016-09-29T10:30:51Z Famous for being famous.

That’s an issue that many people have with the likes of the Kardashian Klan or the Hadids, and pretty much why Vogue allies have no regard for fashion bloggers.

It has been a debate since the beginning of (fashion bloggers’) time, and was again prompted by harsh criticism of them during this year’s Milan Fashion Week – comments which immediately got fashion blogger’s backs up.

The Daily Best summarised the criticism of Vogue allies:

Paris Fashion Week thus began with a delicious feud between the self-serious Vogue staffers and the “bloggers who change head-to-toe, paid-to-wear outfits every hour” and, according to Sally Singer, Vogue.com’s Creative Digital Director, are “heralding the death of style.”

The disdain was laid on thicker this time around. Taking cues from Singer, one Vogue.com critic sniffed about the “horrible” scrum of bloggers and photographers outside shows and the “pathetic… desperate” women who dress up to be snapped. Another turned down her nose at the “sad” women who “preen for the cameras in borrowed clothes.”

Still another compared looking for street style stars in the “bought-and-paid-for (‘blogged out?’) front row” to “going to a strip club looking for romance.”

She found it all “ridiculous” and rather “embarrassing,” frankly, especially in the context of “what else is going on in the world. (Have you registered to vote yet? Don’t forget the debate on Monday!)” Here was a bit of political grandstanding, lest we think that Vogue writers only care about fashion.

Yet street style has evolved from fashionistas of the world being snapped by famous street photographers, like Bill Cunningham and the early days of Scott Schuman’s The Sartorialist.

And Vogue – and other fashion magazine houses – frequently feature fashion bloggers on their site and even in the mag. Hypocrite much?

One such blogger, Zanita Whittington, an Australian model, penned a rebuttal on her blog:

What shocked me was how nasty and biased the comments were – they clearly weren’t getting enough sleep. Frankly I wasn’t surprised they might think these things, we’re all guilty of a bit of gossip and I know how certain editors feel about the outside chaos. But to publish it?

It’s odd that, while dissing the whole scene, there was no acknowledgement of how much that scene is valued by magazines and designers, otherwise there wouldn’t be so many photographers making incomes out of it. [Fashion publications] are the ones supplying the demand. That’s the definition of hypocrisy.

Whatever, the fashion world is all about money and there is so much of that going around I am sure both sides of the party are sitting very happily with all their clothes, whether “borrowed” or given.

Kiernan <![CDATA[This Local Professor Outlines Why Free Higher Education In South Africa Will Never Work]]> http://www.2oceansvibe.com/?p=318639 2016-09-29T09:05:06Z 2016-09-29T09:01:59Z Off the bat lemme just say this – I don’t necessarily agree with everything you’re about to read.

We’ve just had a few people send it our way with words like ‘brilliant’ and ‘argument closed’ attached, so we thought we would tell you what Nico Cloete, Extraordinary Professor at the University of the Western Cape [his title, not ours], had to say that people found so illuminating.

His piece appeared on Fin24, and in a nutshell outlines why free higher education will only benefit those from wealthier families, many of whom can already afford the fees in place.

It’s a lengthy piece, but I’ll try my best to pull some excerpts that provide a summary of sorts:

Firstly, there is no such thing as “free higher education”. Universities are very expensive. Rather, the issue is who pays what and when? Secondly, international research shows that there is broad agreement among economists of higher education funding that government subsidies are “regressive”, meaning that subsidies favour the rich…

To state the obvious, in South Africa free higher education will widen, not reduce, inequality. This is because the low participation rate (currently at 20%), combined with free tuition, would immediately restrict the expansion of places.

In addition the main problem for the poor in South Africa is not that they cannot afford higher education. The issue is that less than 5% of them qualify for entry into universities.

The contrast with the 5% whose parents earn over R600 000 could not be more marked. The percentage who qualify to enter university in this bracket is over 70%.

It will be the children of the new political and business elite who have the significant social, cultural and economic capital who will succeed in school and gain access to tertiary education.

Like the rest of Africa, South Africa has limited (even zero) growth and one of the most unequal and inefficient school systems on the continent. Installing a free university system on top of that will only serve to solidify and expand inequality.

The issue is thus not feasibility, but whether South Africa wants to adopt another self-destructive policy that will widen inequality and privilege the de-racialising rich. As such, the question to be addressed by the Fees Commission should have been: What is required for a sustainable higher education system with affordability for those who qualify for access?

feesfallfree2

As I mentioned that’s really just a nugget of what Professor Cloete had to say, but I will also touch on what he thinks South Africa should do moving forward:

The issue is to fix the undergraduate university and the college systems, provide vastly expanded education and training opportunities, put in place a modern progressive graduate tax instead of an outdated loan scheme and stop raiding the Treasury. So while the fees commission and the media are looking at money, the issue is political and systemic.

South Africa desperately needs strong tertiary education institutions. It is one of the most unequal societies in the world and its economy isn’t growing. Higher education is a social mobility mechanism. In a recent submission to the Fees Commission, I argued that poor and middle class South Africans see higher education, and particularly universities, as the only ladder into the affluent middle class.

Their perception is correct. The World Bank has found that South Africa has the highest private return to tertiary education – that means that getting a degree is a passport to employment. And Van den Berg has found that graduates are three to five times more likely than a school leaver to find a job.

Maintaining and building strong universities needs a combination of two things: better government funding and fee income with affordability funding support for the poor and the lower middle class.

There’s much more to his argument, so if you really want to sink your teeth in you can read his full piece HERE.

I think it’s important that we all remember one thing here – some, not all, but some of these students are protesting for all the right reasons.

To lump the entire #FeesMustFall movement together is to undermine those who want to enact real change, and the way some of the campuses and their private security thugs have treated students points towards a bubbling undercurrent of anger that is truly frightening.

Chances are you’ve seen this video already, but here’s what happened yesterday at Rhodes University up in Grahamstown. Do police really need to use such force, knowing full well the escalation in violence that will follow?

This one comes with a warning that there are some violent scenes – consider yourself warned:

There simply has to be a better way.

Following the incident, her family did everything they could to get the breed of dog banned in their home city of Montreal, and the law came into effect on Tuesday.

A contentious decision, the law will include a ban on new ownership of pit bulls and pit bull-type dogs.

Many people have opposed the law, calling it outrageous, and animal advocates have pointed out that similar bylaws in other cities have quickly been repealed.

The dogs which have banned include:

 • Staffordshire bull terriers
 • American pit bull terriers
 • American Staffordshire terriers
 • Any mix with these breeds
 • Any dog that presents characteristics of one of those breeds

Those who already own a dog of such a type will have to acquire a special permit by year end.

The law has also gone so far as to put aggressive dogs into two categories: at-risk and dangerous. Dangerous dogs are those that have killed someone or are deemed dangerous by an expert. If your dog is deemed dangerous the city will be able to act in ways that are lawful.

Honestly, owners should be deemed responsible for such incidences as pit bulls are not the only type of dogs to be at such a high risk of violence.

Case in point is Cell C and their aggressive (desperate) new campaign to keep customers, offering a hefty (max of) R10 000 to those who sign up for the Pinnacle suit range of contracts.

With 24 million subscribers they sit in third place, which makes you realise how many South Africans have a second or third number. Below from Fin24:

[Cell C] said that three of this category’s packages will be renamed to Pinnacle 600, Pinnacle 1000 and Pinnacle Unlimited.

Pinnacle Unlimited customers, for example, can now receive unlimited calls, unlimited SMS’s and 3GB of data with an added promotional 7GB of data for the duration of their contract term.

“They will also receive 1 000 free Wi-Fi Calling minutes and a whopping R10 000 cash back,” said Cell C.

Customers can take up a SIM-only plan or bundle any device on a 24-month contract, said Cell C. Meanwhile, Cell C also plans to give away money for its Pinnacle 250 packages.

Customers of Pinnacle 250, at R299 per month, receive 250 minutes, 250 SMS’s and 250MB of data. As part of a summer promotion, Cell C said customers will receive an additional 500 minutes, 500 SMS’s and 1 000 Wi-Fi Calling minutes per month – for the duration of their contract term.

“On the Pinnacle 250, customers will also receive a R3 000 cash back bonus, just for signing up with Cell C,” said the company in a statement.

This isn’t their first time waving the cash in front of our noses – back in February they offered R20 000 to certain customers who switched across from rival networks (HERE).

I guess they see it as money well spent, especially when you consider they’ll just get you back with every out of bundle megabyte of data you use.

This time around, the Ukrainian’s victim was Kim Kardashian, someone he has “attacked” before (back in 2014 – HERE).

While in Paris, Kim Kardashian stepped out of her car on her way to L’Avenue restaurant – a place Kim and other celebs are frequently spotted – and was blindsided by Sediuk who attempted to plant a kiss on her butt.

Celeb makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic caught the whole thing on camera, and uploaded it to Instagram:

Naturally, Sediuk took to Instagram to tell the world why he targeted Kim and why he attempted to kiss her ass:

Kim has since reached out to French authorities to file a report against the prankster, but I rate she was just a little jelly she wasn’t the subject of his attention all along.

It’s a little different if Donald Trump talked about your father’s infidelities with a ‘sorry not sorry’ wave of his tiny hands, saying how proud of himself he was that he hadn’t brought up Bill and Monica’s soiree back in the day.

He did this moments after stepping off stage, just by the way, so he may as well have just belted it out mid-debate.

A brief clip of his post-debate ramblings:

Anyway, Chelsea has heard it all before, and in an interview post debate with Cosmo she spoke about the incident:

Well, my reaction to that is just what my reaction has been kind of every time Trump has gone after my mom or my family, which is that it’s a distraction from his inability to talk about what’s actually at stake in this election and to offer concrete, comprehensive proposals about the economy, or our public school system, or debt-free college, or keeping our country safe and Americans safe here at home and around the world.

And candidly, I don’t remember a time in my life when my parents and my family weren’t being attacked, and so it just sort of seems to be in that tradition, unfortunately. And what I find most troubling by far are Trump’s — and we talked about this when you interviewed me the night before the Iowa caucus — are Trump’s continued, relentless attacks on whole swaths of our country and even our global community: women, Muslims, Americans with disabilities, a Gold Star family. I mean, that, to me, is far more troubling than whatever his most recent screed against my mom or my family [is].

Trump, the racist buffoon who has no plan and no understanding of any of the basic requirements to govern a country, will somehow compete in a neck and neck election race against Hillary on November 8.

Jozi was the scene of an alleged cyclist attack over the weekend, with a furious prawn accused of striking a woman in the face and hurling hot coffee at her husband.

The incident began near the Cradle of Humankind on the weekend, Samantha van den Heever honking her hooter in response to a cyclist moving into her lane to overtake other cyclists.

The problem was that this was on a blind turn, which meant she was forced to brake hard and take to the horn. Over to News24:

When she stopped, the cyclist allegedly started hitting her car. “And when I got out to ask him what his problem was, he started attacking me,” she said.

Another cyclist, Simon Riekert, who came to her aid, said the other cyclist was foaming at the mouth.

“I told him not to hit the woman and he attacked me too,” Riekert said.

He said he grabbed the man’s bicycle and used it to defend Van den Heever and himself.

“He finally drove off, but kept on swearing,” Riekert said.

Riekert managed to snap this picture – that top is pretty unique, no?

cyclewhodat

If you’re thinking that’s the end of the story you’re wrong, because round two was about to kick off:

Van den Heever and her husband Gavin were on their way to the Muldersdrift police station to lay a charge after the attack when they spotted their alleged attacker at a bistro.

When Gavin got out of the car to ask the man’s name, the cylist allegedly threw his coffee over him and struck him with the cup. Gavin had to have two stitches in his lip, and had root canal work and a crown done on Monday.

Jislaaik, that cup must have been thrown with serious force to cause that kind of damage.

The bottom line is that (alleged) behaviour like this can’t really be condoned, so let’s see if we can find out who this chap is.

While some of Cape Town’s residents are highly unimpressed with certain plans and prospects, other buildings are making their mark in a more positive way.

Like the Zero-2-One Tower.

Across the road from the Cape Town Central Station, the new building skyscraper is set to be built and could claim the title of Cape Town’s tallest. It is currently in its planning stage.

zero2one-site-640x290

The Tower will be hosted by the plot on the corner of Adderley and Strand streets (see above).

Comprised of 42 storeys and approximately 148m in height, the Tower will enter South Africa’s top ten tallest buildings, tying with The Reserve Bank Building in Pretoria – read the list HERE.

And it’s not that ugly, either:zero2one-2-640x845

The building will have over 600 apartments, 760 parking bays, and a massive retail space as well as a viewing deck with 360 degree views open to the general public.

Look how pretty it sits:

screen-shot-2016-09-28-at-11-31-57-am

The development was initiated by FWJK, and other projects by the development company include Touchstone House (corner of Bree and Mechau streets) and KMPG Place (corner of Christiaan Barnard Street and Martin Hammerschlag Way).

I see they have a thing for street corners.

South Africa’s richest man is now investing another $1,8 billion (R24 billion) in Steinhoff International Holdings, with the furniture retailer set to up the ante with acquisitions in Europe and North America.

Fin24 has the details:

Wiese, whose net worth is estimated at $6.6bn (R89.1bn), according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, said last month Steinhoff isn’t done with deals as acquisitions are part of the company’s DNA. Steinhoff snapped up UK discount chain Poundland Group and Mattress Firm Holding of the US in the past year as it aims to challenge the likes of Ikea.

“The real story here is around Wiese, confirming the financial backing and the acumen which he brings to the company,” said Mark Hodgson, a Cape Town-based analyst at Avior Capital Markets.

“They are raising more than what I estimated they required, which may suggest there are more deals in the pipeline.”

Steinhoff are also set to raise an additional $2,75 billion (R37 billion) through offering shares to other investors, which will also be put towards that Europe / North America effort.

Must be nice, hey.

Sloane Hunter <![CDATA[Today’s Pro Tip: Advice From A Local Sommelier To Make You Seem Wise Beyond Your Years]]> http://www.2oceansvibe.com/?p=318406 2016-09-28T14:44:29Z 2016-09-28T13:24:52Z Last night I ate dark chocolate while sipping on red wine. I was pretty smug at my success on a wine-pairing well done, and thought my sommelier brother might be proud.

However, my bubble of enthusiasm was soon deflated by the realisation there’s more to red wine than the colour.

That’s when I decided I needed to start taking any wine pairing advice – and my favourite happened to come from Spencer Fondaumiere, manager and sommelier at Burrata.

We introduced you to Buratta a while back – HERE – when we told you about our favourite Biscuit Mill restaurant which happens (for now) to not require a months-long waiting period.

Famed for its flair for the unexpected, Burrata also has a superbly pointed wine list – but that shouldn’t be a surprise when Neil Grant is owner.

When we first introduced the open-plan space to you, we mentioned there’s a healthy range of pastas and mains for both vegetarians and meat eaters – but we left out the fact that the restaurant has a superb selection of risotto dishes, too.

burrataapril2016clairegunn4

We asked Spencer to give us some advice on how to pair that glass of wine with any of Burrata’s risotto dishes, and he willingly obliged. What he had to say is brilliantly casual, but full of solid wisdom.

If risotto isn’t your vibe don’t stress, much of the advice can be applied as a general rule:

 1. Pay attention to texture: risotto is often made with delicate flavours, or cooked in light broths. So it’s tempting to pair it with soft, light-bodied wines. However a well-made risotto will always have some crunch and it’s important to find a wine that can stand up to that.
 2. Enhance those delicate flavours: risottos combine a number of elements in one dish. It’s easy when pairing to ignore more subtle flavours and rather pair with the bold ones. In doing so you can completely bury the little nuances.
 3. Go with your gut: it is easy to be painted into a corner when pairing wines, red wine with red meat, and so on. Risotto allows one to be bold and to be experimental. Once again it’s because of the different elements at play, you can come up with some real out-of-the-box pairings.
 4. Try and keep it fresh: generally quite a dense dish, risotto is often cooked with cream or butter. There are of course exceptions; but more often then not that’s the case. So, a wine with good acidity and fresh aromatics is a pretty good foil.
 5. At Burrata we do a delicious asparagus risotto with goats cheese and truffle oil. It pairs most beautifully with a Fumé blanc (wooded Sauvignon Blanc), a wooded Bordeaux white or if you want to be really adventurous—a wooded Semillon. I would use the Thorne and Daughters Paper Kite if I went the Semillon route or the Fledge and co Fumé blanc. I find the toasted dry spice notes combine well with the earthy truffle oil and the acidity in the wine livens up the creamy risotto, and, of course, the asparagus is a perfect fit for the wine.

Sure it’s not marijuana, but if you can’t remember all that, I am sure Spencer will willingly divulge his knowledge with you when you pop into Burrata for a meal.

After all, their Italian-inspired menu pulls in all the delicious flavours from the traditional side along with an exciting modern twist.

Of course he’s been performing on the world stage for a number of years, but there’s something about a run so good it stops Usain Bolt in his tracks that really sticks in the memory.

Just to put a smile on your dial and help ease the midweek pain let’s relive that moment one more time, with Usain’s face pretty much saying it all:

And the fact that he is coached by a great-grandmother (HERE) – stop it now.

One person who is certainly a fan is Western Cape Premier Helen Zille, who has written to Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille suggesting that Green Point Athletics Stadium be renamed after Wayde.

TimesLive reports:

“Mr Van Niekerk flew South Africa’s flag high and did the nation proud‚” Zille said on Wednesday.

In 2015‚ he won the 400m final at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing‚ she said‚ and he was the first person to run faster than 10 seconds for 100m‚ 20 seconds for 200m and 44 seconds for 400m.

waydehelen2

“These are extraordinary feats‚ especially for a 24-year-old university student. I believe it would be appropriate to honour Mr Van Niekerk by renaming the current Green Point Athletics Stadium after him. He has not only done the country proud‚ but his home city and province.

“The renaming of the stadium would not only serve as a reminder of his incredible story‚ but as an inspiration to many other young people – demonstrating that anything is possible‚ with the right combination of discipline‚ hard work and dedication”.

I’m sure there are many boxes to be ticked and signed before this comes to fruition, but if it helps inspire local kids to take up athletics then perhaps it’s a good thing.

Will we see a Caster Semenya renaming somewhere in her home province of Limpopo?

Also, anyone know if Wayde has been able to hang on to the R10 million watch he wore during the Olympics (HERE)?

Sure most of it is taken up with mocking Donald Trump and other U.S. political follies (see his brilliant presidential debate wrap HERE), but there’s more to the hosting gig at The Daily Show than meets the eye.

The team at VICE followed T-No around and weren’t shy of snapping a picture, but we’ll start with their write-up:

The Daily Show with Trevor Noah is a much bigger production than you’d think from just watching it on TV. Each episode is crafted in a studio in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen neighbourhood over the course of ten intense hours.

The days start with Noah and his team of collaborators in the writers’ room, where they hammer out and workshop ideas. And it ends a few feet away on a sound stage with Noah behind a desk, telling jokes to a live audience of more than 200 fans and more than 7 million viewers across the internet and TV.

From watches to wallets, if your eye is focused on the beauty of your surroundings rather than your possessions, you may leave with only your memories.

A Reddit user posted an image that alluded to the idea that it was the moment his girlfriend’s watch was being taken off her wrist.

Here’s the story, according to The Telegraph:

A man and his girlfriend got back from a trip to Thailand and couldn’t figure out what happened to the woman’s watch. Then they started looking at photos from the trip, and one shows a young Thai girl in ceremonial garb who appears to be fiddling with the watch at the precise moment the photo was taken.

Here’s the picture:

1085675-11-20160927072133

The post has since been deleted from Reddit as the user has been accused of assumptions. The Telegraph continues:

“This pic solved the mystery of the missing watch,” writes the unidentified poster, who thinks he snapped an image of a pickpocket in action.

The post generated so much attention that police in Thailand brought in the two pictured girls for questioning with their parents, and the parents adamantly deny the allegation, notes a post at Khaosod English.

According to the police, the parents of the kids would have filed a complaint against the false accusation had the couple still been in Thailand. Apparently the parents were upset that people could think her daughter, 7, could do such a thing – but Reddit users had other things to say:

Notice how the thief is touching her hand in several places? It’s a pickpocket technique so that the mark gets accustomed to being touched by the thief and stops registering all of the touches.

The man who posted the photograph admitted they were “a bit drunk” and that it was a cheap watch – thank the high heavens it wasn’t a Nixon otherwise tears would have really flowed.

The world’s best and brightest young scientists gathered at Google’s headquarters over in California, and the stand-out science project was that of the Grade 11 pupil at St Martin’s School in Rosettenville, Jozi.

Kiara’s project was on using fruit to combat drought, taking home the grand prize and the R680 000 in scholarship funding that came with it.

TimesLive with the nitty-gritty:

[She] based her project on a natural super-absorbent polymer that allows soil to retain massive amounts of water…

During her research‚ which she worked on for about two months‚ she found that most citrus fruit contained naturally occurring polymers.

kiaranirghin

Orange peels contain 64% of polysaccharides‚ making them a candidate as a biodegradable polymer.

She experimented with ultraviolet light and heat and added natural oil found in avocado peels to boiled orange peels. After 45 days‚ her experiments showed that the mixture could absorb 76.1% of water‚ supporting her hypothesis that it could increase soil moisture.

Chemical absorbents are not biodegradable and sell at around R28 000 a ton. Kiara’s orange peel and avocado mix could be produced at R848 a ton.

Whether or not that all makes sense to you, the last sentence seems to be the one that really jumps out. If we can find a much cheaper alternative to protect the agricultural sector against crippling implications of drought, who knows what good could come of her hard work.

Take a bow Kiara.

SPLING http://www.spling.co.za <![CDATA[SPL!NG Movie Review: The Magnificent Seven (2016)]]> http://www.2oceansvibe.com/?p=318551 2016-09-28T12:20:40Z 2016-09-28T12:20:40Z The Magnificent Seven is a revisionist Western remake of a classic Western, which was based on a Japanese film called The Seven Samurai. The story of heroes vs. cowards, little man vs. big man, defending your fortress and fighting for freedom from tyranny and persecution has remained timeless. The altruism at the heart of The Seven Samurai is part of the reason this film has been immortalised and still holds up today. The heroic seven are an inspiration to audiences, who feel powerless in a system that only seems to make the rich richer and the powerful, invincible.

Perhaps this is what makes the remake of The Magnificent Seven a timely affair, demonstrating the power of a few in their capacity to mobilise and arm the downtrodden in an effort to overcome unreasonable tyranny by force. While this The Magnificent Seven doesn’t reinvent the basic story of a few guns-for-hire defending a helpless village, it does redress it, bringing a diverse cast of characters together as a ragtag team of strays who unite to defend the common man. Several Wild West minority groups are represented by The Magnificent Seven and each of them have their reasons, whether motivated by destiny, revenge, money, justice or the wind of change and it’s refreshing to see Denzel Washington charging on a stallion as team leader, Sam Chisolm.

Following in the wake of The Hateful Eight, it’s probably not as novel having a black actor taking the lead in a classic Western, but Washington does good as a bounty hunter and “peace-maker” partnering with Antoine Fuqua in a film that stands its ground. He’s supported by Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke and Vincent D’Onofrio as part of his posse, opposing Peter Sarsgaard as the despicable mining tycoon, Bart Bogue. Pratt isn’t quite as charming and cheeky as he was in Guardians of the Galaxy, but adds some extra firepower. Hawke seems to enjoy himself as the tarnished legend, Goodnight while D’Onofrio gets to grips with a part-bear-part-man in Jack.

magnificent-seven

“I suppose you’re wondering why I called this meeting?”

The film works mostly thanks to its book ends, starting with an intense church scene that recalls There Will Be Blood, and moving onto a high body count showdown to cap things off. The Magnificent Seven would have done well to stay in the channel of There Will Be Blood as they tap into the idea of big business enslaving a town and buying the very soul of justice from the Sheriff and his men. However, this cinematic opening gives way to a more generic rounding up the men middle as Chisolm gathers the usual suspects with one or two surprises.

The third act is all gunpowder and bravado as the town prepare for onslaught and Bogue’s men muster on the scene. Having influenced many Westerns over the years and already broken in the concept, much of the film has a dull familiarity tipping the hat to the original while bowing to genre cliches. It was to be expected and you’d be foolish to go in expecting a complete reinvention. What does work is the gunpowder and star power, slowly building to an explosive and violent massacre, and using some big name stars to get us there.

This Western could have done with more camaraderie. While the actors create an easy-going chemistry, it’s not in danger of dislodging bromances like that of Robert Redford and Paul Newman. Chris Pratt looks like he’s enjoying himself in all the mayhem, but sometimes you wonder if his character isn’t just psychotic that way. Washington and Hawke do add some class, but it’s always good and rarely great. The grit of The Revenant may have spoiled things a bit for this Western, but then again they’re more concerned with popcorn thrills than breathtaking cinematography.

It’s a wild and entertaining ride that has enough quality to serve as a solid remake, but this film realises its place within the broader context. The diversity and representation makes this underdog tale sizzle below the surface and the stellar cast helps overcome the cracks in what is otherwise a fairly routine film. You may already know the drill, but there’s enough twinkle, some epic landscape shots and plenty of shoot ’em up spirit to get the job done.

The bottom line: Enjoyable

A couple was photographed in a Shoprite store on their wedding day, and the picture subsequently went viral – what an odd choice for such a celebration.

So why did they couple go there?

Well it wasn’t because “the bride insisted they go via Shoprite coz her competition works there,” as one suggested, or because the groom “asked for leave for a weekend to get married but Shoprite refused and insisted he should be at work. So he got married,” as suggested by another.

screen-shot-2016-09-28-at-9-48-39-am

According to Shoprite spokesperson Sarita Van Wyk, the picture was captured at a Shoprite store in Botswana on Sunday 25 September and she revealed the real season the couple were there:

The photo depicts members of the wedding party of Onalenna Gaewe‚ a bakery assistant in Shoprite Maun‚ Botswana‚ who was married on Sunday‚ 25 September at a church in town.

On the request of some of her colleagues who were not able to attend the wedding‚ Onalenna and her bridegroom agreed to pay a quick visit to the store on their way to the reception venue‚ to receive their gifts and congratulations.

And there you have it. Next time, get the real story before assuming the worst in people.

Anyone who is old enough to remember the 1995 World Cup on our shores will recall the excitement every time he touched the ball, and during his career he provided fans with a highlights reel unparalleled in modern rugby.

You can see some of those HERE, but let’s move on to talking about nine-year-old try machine Meaalofa Te’o.

He’s the young chap CNN are talking up in a big way, and there’s a chance you may have seen this video doing the rounds on Facebook the past week or so.

Sure that’s rugby league, not rugby union, but let’s hear from CNN:

Physically, he’s certainly not your average 9-year-old, and he dwarfs both his teammates and the opposition.

The video shows him playing at the gala for the Doveton Steelers under-9 team, which went on to win 20-10 in the final of the tournament…

The sight of Te’o surging through would-be defenders is not dissimilar to watching a Jonah Lomu highlights reel. The great New Zealand winger…made his name by powering through opponents on the way to the try-line.

Te’o has quickly become an internet sensation. The USA Rugby Sevens page racked up 30 million views after sharing footage showing Te’o in action.

“Tries like that are normal for him, he is a very good player but soft at heart,” the player’s father Karene Te’o said in an interview with Nine’s Wide World of Sports.

“He is a very humble young boy.”

Humble and young he may be, but once he steps foot on the field it appears he enjoys running riot.

If you want to see an interview with the young lad and his father check the video below:

That was probably the thinking behind the two Port Elizabeth students who stole a penguin called Buddy from a local marine park, then released him into the Indian Ocean.

Noble, maybe. Stupid – certainly, because it turns out they’ve done far more damage than good. IOL reports:

The endangered African black-footed penguin was taken from Bayworld in Port Elizabeth in the early hours of Wednesday last week, put in a car and taken the short distance to the coast…

Security camera footage showed the two students, both in their 20s, entering the penguin enclosure at night after parking their car outside. They released Buddy at nearby Pollock Beach…

The students, who have not been named, confessed to the crime and said it was a demonstration against animals being kept in captivity…

Here’s why that was a complete brain fart, according to Dylan Bailey, manager of the Bayworld Oceanarium:

Bailey warned that three-year-old Buddy who was raised in captivity, faced certain death in the ocean.

“Although Buddy is a healthy penguin and should have enough energy to survive for up to three weeks in the wild, he is a captive raised bird that is now in an unfamiliar environment,” Bailey said. “He simply does not have the experience necessary to survive.”

penguin-fail

Penguins normally mate for life, and Buddy has been taken away from his partner Francis [with chick, above].

They had two chicks, though one died previously.

Bailey also said the park is still deciding what legal action, if any, should be taken against the misguided students.

Park staff have been patrolling the coast hoping to spot Buddy, who is not fitted with a tracker, but does have an identification tag on his left flipper.

Come on PE folk, launch a full-scale penguin hunt and reunite Francis with her lost lover. After all, it’s not like you’ve got much else going on.

Jokes, kinda.

Take for example the murder of Yorkshire schoolgirl Elsie Frost in 1965, the 14-year-old attacked and stabbed as she walked through a railway tunnel.

The case happened to attract some media attention last year, 50 years after the fact, and as a result new information came to light.

Off the back of that a new investigation was launched by West Yorkshire Police, with the quotes below from Detective Superintendent Nick Wallen on Sky News:

“Since then we have received significant numbers of calls and emails from members of the public offering new information, and have generated new lines of inquiry which officers have been progressing ever since.

elsiemurders2

“Following those inquiries we have now arrested a 78-year-old man in the Berkshire area and will be interviewing him under caution to progress our investigation”…

“The response we have received from the public since launching the reinvestigation is a testament to their dedication and to the strength of feeling Elsie’s murder continues to generate in the local community in Wakefield.”

Pretty sure that bloke, if guilty, would have thought he had got away with murder. Some more history on the case:

elsiemurders

Hundreds of people were questioned by police after Elsie’s body was found at the bottom of a flight of steps by a dog walker, but her killer evaded justice.

In 1966, Ian Bernard Spencer, then aged 33, was charged with her murder and cleared on the orders of the judge who heard the case at trial.

Given that we have such a backlog of unsolved cases here in SA I don’t see too many 50-year-old investigations leading to arrests, but at least it might make a few criminals shed a bead of sweat or two.

We know that the ANC suffered a humbling defeat in the municipality, and ever since then they haven’t been too keen on mayor (and DA member) Solly Msimanga.

That might be to do with some of the cost-cutting measures he has taken, including putting an end to lavish catered events at the expense of the taxpayer (HERE).

The ANC already stand accused of trying to sabotage governance with unauthorised land grabs (HERE), members in the province caught illegally selling off land.

Moving on to the latest fiasco, yesterday’s sitting of the council in Tshwane. Here’s TimesLive:

During the sitting at the council chambers in the Sammy Marks centre in Pretoria CBD‚ ANC councillors demanded that the chair of chairs in council steps down‚ saying he was not properly appointed.

Speaker Rachel Mathebe had made her opening remarks‚ greeting the executive mayor Solly Msimanga‚ chief whip of council and chair of chairs – who is from the Democratic Alliance – when the ANC contingent rejected her statements.

That’s all fine, but how did they handle the situation from there? Another TimesLive story:

ANC councillors prevented the security staff from carrying out the order and the metro police officers were ordered inside.

The meeting descended into scenes reminiscent of recent parliamentary tussles. ANC councillors confronted the police‚ stretching out their hands and saying‚ “Here are our hands. Arrest us. This is what you are here for‚ then do it”.

During the confrontation there were also a tussle between the metro cops and the councillors.

Six hours into the meeting‚ council had not begun dealing with the agenda of the day. Metro police were still negotiation with ANC councillors for one of them to leave the chamber.

Just take a look for yourself at how matters unfolded:

And another angle:

And here, clear and wanton destruction of property. It’s not on from our students, and it’s even worse when it’s at the hands of government officials:

Imagine wanting to make a metro ungovernable, something that affects each and every citizen that calls it home, because you can’t admit that your party’s failings caused the electorate to completely lose faith?

There are steps to be taken when you believe someone has been appointed without the appropriate steps being taken (cough, Hlaudi), but they don’t include destroying property that will just end in funds being redirected away from where they should be spent.

Sigh, it would all be far more entertaining if it wasn’t so sad.

At least in yesterday’s story a man was attacked by a python for his crimes (HERE), but no such luck in this example.

What you’re about to see is Hillary on fleek, which is to say she’s lapping up the millennial love and milking it hard.

First, the picture:

hillaryselfiessss

Then TIME with an analysis of sorts:

For some, the moment was a representation of a narcissistic “generation selfie” and everything that’s wrong with it. “The crowd members at a campaign event in Orlando were simply desperate to place themselves in the same photo frame as the historic presidential candidate,” wrote the Telegraph, as the photograph went viral on social networks.

But for the photographer, Barbara Kinney, it’s was “one of those moments that just organically comes together,” she tells TIME.

Kinney, Clinton’s official campaign photographer, was following the candidate as she greeted people in the overflow room at an event in Orlando on Sept. 21. “There were 500 people that couldn’t fit in the main event so she went and visited them in an adjacent room afterwards,” a spokesman for Clinton’s campaign tells TIME. That’s when Clinton suggested that they take a group selfie, posing for the crowd as they all aimed for the perfect selfie. “It was pretty amazing to be there and capture it,” says Kinney.

This year’s election may well be decided by the ‘generation selfie’ crowd, with a large number of younger voters said to be undecided at present.

It’s obvious that appealing to their common sense has failed, so if posing for selfies is what it takes to avoid Trump taking control you do your thing Hillary.

Sloane Hunter <![CDATA[Elon Musk Unveils Jaw-Dropping Plans To Colonise Mars – Promises ‘Interplanetary Life’ In 6 Years [Video]]]> http://www.2oceansvibe.com/?p=318321 2016-09-28T07:29:33Z 2016-09-28T07:29:33Z There’s no doubt Elon Musk is a man of ambition – and his latest vision sees manned missions to Mars beginning as soon as 2022.

That’s six years to figure out not only how the mission will happen, but how such an extravagant mission will be funded.

Addressing an audience at the International Astronautical Congress in Guadalajara, Mexico, on Tuesday, Musk explained why his company SpaceX plans to send people to Mars:

What I really want to try to achieve here is to make Mars seem possible – like it’s something we can achieve in our lifetimes.

There are two fundamental paths facing humanity today. One is that we stay on Earth forever and then there will be an inevitable extinction event. The alternative is to become a spacefaring civilisation, and a multi-planetary species.

But how does he plan to do this? He explained in one Tweet:

screen-shot-2016-09-28-at-8-30-34-am

Okay, okay, there’s an actual ship with an actual name.

Called the Interplanetary Transport System (ITS), SpaceX released a video to show how the ITS will work:

I feel like I have just come out of the planetarium after watching that.

engadget gave a break down of the information in the video:

The ITS is capable of carrying up to 100 tons of cargo (that’s supplies and people) and it will rely on a few different power sources to make it all the way to Mars.

Liftoff requires 28,730,000 pounds of thrust, which suggests the ITS will use roughly 40 Raptor rocket engines, which each generate 680,000 pounds of thrust.

Once the ship reaches orbit, its booster will return to Earth and immediately re-launch with a refueling pod, which matches up with the ITS to top off its propellant.

Then, the ITS deploys its solar arrays, two wing-like panels that fold out from the base of the ship and provide 200 kW of power, and it sets off.

Once humans on the ITS actually make it to Mars and successfully land, SpaceX teases that the planet will be terraformed, transitioning from classic red to lush greens and blues.

You can watch the full presentation below, which strangely begins at the 20-minute mark:

Elon was applauded by both NASA and Bill Nye the Science Guy, calling the notion “extraordinary.” Bill Nye, who was in the audience, said:

Watching the crowd go absolutely wild today tells me that the best is yet ahead for space exploration. Musk presented a very aggressive schedule that seemed feasible to the crowd.

No matter what we send to Mars, I very much hope we conduct a thorough, careful search for life before we consider landing people and cargo. I believe the discovery of life or evidence of life would change the way we think about the cosmos and our place within it.

If anyone knows what he is talking about, it’s Musk – and we only have six years to wait to see.

Johannesburg is notorious for its egotistical gym bunnies who frequently cause shit to bait others into a fight – but during one of the more recent public occurrences, no one is too sure what the exact story is.

At the Sounds Like Summer Heritage Day party on Saturday, a group of partygoers got into a scuffle with the bouncers when they were asked to leave the party. According to the Sounds Like Summer organisers, the group is notorious for causing trouble at events and nightclubs.

Here’s one video of the incident…

…and here’s another:

Nothing like a Tracy Chapman remix to get the blood pumping.

A few of the people who were involved in the brawl were taken to ICU – Captain Elliot Tshivhase confirmed the incident:

About eight people sustained stab wounds when a fight ensued during the [The Sounds Like Summer] festival at the James & Ethel Gray Park.

Charges were laid by a partygoer and then later withdrawn without any given reason. Suspicious, no?

Many eyewitnesses of the incident took to the event’s Facebook page to offer their account, slamming the bouncers for using such force when they are there to protect, not to retaliate. One person said:

To the people that witness and felt as helpless as I did, this is something I hope can actually make a change and bring awareness against the people that are supposed to look after us, when in actual fact they abuse their authority and position of power.

The Olympus security company not only threw the first punch but they brutally kicked, pushed and punched both people part of the fight and those who tried to break it up. In fairness those who were involved were not in the right either but they weren’t wearing the uniform that I believe holds them accountable, the guys wearing Olympus protection security uniforms are meant to be there to protect and prevent brutal attacks but they were the very people that escalated it.

Here’s another’s account:

You almost cost me my friends and boyfriend’s lives you pieces of utter sh*t! There were no glass bottles anywhere and if I remember correctly it was your head of security who threw the first punch because of course he must show everyone that he is in charge and not once was anyone told to leave the premises so that alone is a hunch of bullsh*t ! I’m glad he got knocked the f*ck down it deserves him right however he definitely was not stabbed in the head unlike my friend who was stabbed in the back…You should be protecting the people there not beating them up to a pulp!

Another partygoer kept it simple:

Bullshit. Bullshit. Bullshit.

This was in response to the event organiser’s statement:

14500775_561444310706803_3683003486252230072_oCan I just ask: How the hell were people stabbed and by whom?

The 41-year-old went to five separate outlets and found the same thing every time – when his children ordered the hake fish fingers they were served the less expensive angelfish.

When he voiced his complaints to the respective managers they admitted he was correct, with this below from IOL:

Hake, at R60 a kilogram, costs twice as much as angelfish, which sells at R30 a kilo.

Parker, the owner of Giant Hyper in Epping, says at first he took it with a pinch of salt, but after five similar experiences, he felt Ocean Basket was ripping off people and should be taken to task for it.

The restaurant chain on Monday admitted that they were caught out hook, line and sinker.

[Parker] said: “I did not want to fuss or anything, but my wife said it was not hake. She buys our food and was concerned as to what it might be. What if it’s something that could cause an allergic reaction?”

oceanbassssket2

Parker said that when he confronted the managers, they admitted to using angelfish when they do not have hake in stock.

“You don’t do that to people,” an upset Parker said.

“I do not want money or anything from them. They must be transparent and communicate with their customers. Tell people there is no hake for the fingers and that you are using other fish. Give people the choice, don’t sell lies.”

As you can imagine there has been much scrambling from Ocean Basket’s side to cover their tracks, with this from a letter Group Marketing Executive for Ocean Basket Jean Sloan directed wrote to Parker:

“We understand that you are a long-standing, loyal customer of Ocean Basket and would like to offer you a dinner experience, at our cost, to the value of R500, as a sincere apology. May we recommend that you take up this offer at either Canal Walk or the N1 City restaurant where the manager will be expecting you and will ensure you have a pleasurable evening?”

Mr Parker wasn’t taking the bait:

Parker said by Monday night no one from Ocean Basket had contacted him yet.

However, he regarded the meal offer as an “insult” and reiterated it was not about the money.

This isn’t the first time they’ve come under fire, with confusion surrounding the sourcing of their fish coming to the fore back in January of last year (HERE).

I think we’ll stick to Cape Town Fish Market and their now legendary specials – R40 for a burger on Mondays, thank you very much.

In case you’re really lagging behind on this one, former Proteas skipper Cronje had himself a bit of a shocker in the late 90s and early 2000s.

There was the tour of India in 2000, when the skipper roped in some of the other players as well, and of course the infamous test against England at Centurion where we forfeited an innings and ended up on the losing side.

The latest from Cricinfo:

[Chawla] was arrested in London in June following an extradition request from India, the Indian Express has reported. Chawla’s case will be heard in London on October 3, even as the UK’s Crown Protection Services (CPS) has written to Delhi Police asking for details about the security arrangements and facilities in the prison in which Chawla will be kept.

“The arrest was made following the Indian government’s extradition request. He faces charges of fixing cricket matches between India and South Africa in 2000,” Yasser Mehmood, press officer of the CPS, told the Indian Express. “Chawla’s case will be heard at the Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London on October 3.”

Chawla, along with four other bookmakers, will now finally have their day in court.

As for Hansie, this past Sunday would have been his 47th birthday. I would say read any of the number of books detailing Hansie’s extensive involvement in the scandals before offering up your emotional defence, but I’ll rather leave you with him tonking Shane Warne around the park all of 22 years ago.

It was perhaps the most anticipated presidential debate in history, and whilst the gloves didn’t completely come off there were still plenty of fireworks.

Trump and his basket of deplorables (HERE) will no doubt say he handled himself well, and he didn’t implode to the extent that many had hoped, but Hillary managed to poke the bear and rile Trump up – something analysts say worked in her favour.

This from Huffington Post:

The Clinton campaign’s greatest fear throughout the general election has been that some other Trump would emerge ― a more measured, reasonable and mature man, one who might look like he was ready for the Oval Office. That man doesn’t exist, so he didn’t show up…

…he fairly quickly reverted to the alpha male role that had worked so well in Republican debates, becoming something of a Rick Lazio in split screen, hectoring, interrupting, sniffling loudly and rolling his eyes…

And that, more than anything, was the impression the debate left: Trump hasn’t thought about this stuff much. He’s not ready to be president. His odd campaign set awfully low expectations, but, paradoxically, high ones as well. He had to show he was ready to be president. He didn’t.

Trump has been gaining on Clinton in recent weeks, and has brought the race close to a tie. If it were held tomorrow, however, Clinton would win, and Trump did nothing to change that dynamic Monday night.

For a three-minute summary be patient and the video below should load:

Let’s head over to Fox News, basically the political polar opposite of Huffington Post, and see if they agree:

The debate took a number of twists and turns, and it’s unclear how and whether it will tilt the race at a time when the polls are tightening. The general election rivals will meet twice more on the debate stage next month…

[Trump] vanquished 16 foes and dominated the stage over the roughly dozen early-season debates.

That record rendered him a rival not to be underestimated by the Clinton camp, which spent days preparing the Democratic nominee in study and mock-debate sessions even while Trump was out campaigning last week.

Yeah, how dare she be preparing for something big and important. Trump reminds me of that kid at school who mocks the other kid who studied, although when he sees his results he refuses to share them with the rest of the class (much like his tax returns).

TIME’s poll (HERE) has, at the time of writing, Trump down as the clear winner:

clintrumpdebates223

The Donald certainly thinks he did well:

At least Trump won the battle of the Twitter stats:

clintrumpdebates2

Great, except for what some of those tweets were saying:

clintrumpdebates22

That Hillary jibe would be Trump denying that he ever said global warming was dreamed up by the Chinese, but forgetting to delete the tweet from 2012 where he explicitly said that.

And as for getting chirped by Jerry Springer – yoh, rough.

For a breakdown of fact-checking from the debate head to the Washington Post HERE, but I guess this one has ended as many of us knew it would.

Trump supporters and the media that feeds their fantasies has him down as the winner, left-leaning outlets have Clinton down as a winner, the rest of the world are left shaking their heads at how it has actually come to this.

Six weeks out from Election Day, November 8, and there is a real chance that Donald Trump might be the next U.S. president.

2016, go home you’re drunk.

Yes, yes, Bocca is once again on our minds and this time we wanted to find out more about the menu itself.

There has been a lot of buzz around the venue as the restaurant’s hand-built pizza oven from Naples happens to create the most delicious Neapolitan pizzas around – but that doesn’t mean they are staunch Italian traditionalists.

Instead, famed owner Neil Grant insists the menu has a modern twist, while retaining an Italian feel.

To learn about what modern Italian cooking means, we caught up with their head chef, Tamara Ulrich. Here’s what she had to say:

tamara

Tell us something no-one knows about you?

Many people wouldn’t know that I originally wanted to study Fine Art. I’m a creative person and I love to draw and paint, but as I got a little older my passion for food took centre stage and I decided to combine my love for art and cooking; and study the culinary arts.

What does modern Italian cooking mean to you?

Letting fresh ingredients speak for themselves, uncomplicated, but full-flavoured dishes that evoke nostalgia with every bite yet are packaged in a new fun way.

What are some of your favourite spring ingredients and how are you using them at Bocca?

I love the fresh flavour that citrus fruit brings to any dish, like how it zests up my lemon and ricotta gnocchi.

Bocca’s must-try dish of the moment?

The dish that screams spring has sprung is the trout with parsnip and vanilla purée, served with a fennel, red onion and lemon salad. It’s light, it’s fresh and has some of the finest ingredients that both spring and summer have to offer.

Wine and food pairing must-try at Bocca?

A great wine and food pairing in my humble opinion would be our sautéed squid paired with the Dorrance Chardonnay.

boccabyclairegunn80

We are pretty lucky to have the likes of Neil Grant making his mark in Cape Town. As a a founding member and past chairman of the South African Sommeliers Association, you can bet that a visit to Burrata, Bocca or Open Door will find the cellars stocked with both familiar favourites and lesser-known gems.

Tamara wasn’t joking when she suggested the Dorrance Chardonnay.

At the time, the list of proposals pertained mostly to that of drinking and driving and trading times – you can read all about that HERE.

But now it has come to light that there are also laws proposed to “place alcohol-related limits for pedestrians on certain classes of road between certain hours.”

The proposal continues, subtly working its argument:

Pedestrians under the influence of alcohol often exhibit risky behaviour, like crossing streets dangerously, and sustain more severe injuries.

Law enforcement has limited tools to remove pedestrians who are posing a danger to themselves and others by walking on or near roads while under the influence. In most in stances, officers cannot arrest the person for public drunkenness unless they are visibly intoxicated or commit other offences.

The proposal is that consideration be given to the introduction of legislation, for example as municipal by-laws, that make it illegal for pedestrians with a BAC or BrAC over 0.15 BAC to walk on or adjacent to certain higher order roads between designated hours where alcohol-related pedestrian crashes are prevalent or there is significant potential risk, unless pedestrians infrastructure has specifically been provided and the pedestrian is making use of that infrastructure.

Legislation would need to empower law enforcement officers to be able to, at a minimum, obtain passive alcohol screening results from pedestrians suspected of being under the influence.

But what does that even mean? Maybe I am being ridiculous, but to me it reads as a way for the government to remove pesky homeless people within the framework of the law?

Tsk tsk, guys, we see you.

Kiernan <![CDATA[Staggering Stats On The Damage Caused To SA Universities During The Student Protests]]> http://www.2oceansvibe.com/?p=318242 2016-09-27T12:13:32Z 2016-09-27T12:00:12Z I think it’s fair to say the #FeesMustFall movement has lost its way a little over the past week or so, the heightened aggression shown across campuses nationwide damaging the credibility of those seeking actual, meaningful change.

We covered that yesterday HERE, renowned political analyst Justice Malala putting it far more eloquently than anything we could manage.

Next up is a statement issued yesterday by Universities South Africa (USAf), who fear that the escalating violence is going to jeopardise the very future of the institutions going forward.

Here’s BusinessTech with that statement:

“There is growing anxiety that the academic project of 2016 is in serious jeopardy. While we are committed to the idea that students have every right to engage in protests and activism in their quest for fee-free higher education, we are also increasingly despairing of the nature of these protests.

“Damage sustained by the university sector in the last year due to student protests is estimated to have now exceeded the R600 million mark,” it said.

You read right – R600 million and counting.

That is a doubling in damage costs since April, when the Department of Higher Education and Training released the last figures to be made public.

April’s announcement also saw a breakdown of damages that had been incurred on each campus:

statsprotestsss

Blade Nzimande spoke earlier at the Department of Higher Education’s headquarters about the damages, with this from TimesLive:

He reiterated his conviction that there was a political element behind the protests‚ saying the he could not understand how a majority of students could be held at ransom and misled by a minority of students.

The minister said people who continue to protest and destroy property in the name of poor were lying‚ as destruction of something already built pointed to something else.

Nzimande blamed the protests on what he said were ultra-left formations and singled out the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) as amongst those behind the protest.

“This is an anti-ANC government agenda by those who cannot win power through the ballot…there is no reason to be protesting‚” he said.

In case you haven’t seen any of what’s going on today, here’s a video shot earlier at the Durban University of Technology (DUT):

An idea of the tension on campus from a second TimesLive article:

“If [private security company] Mi7 decides to militarise this campus‚ we will moer them‚” said Bonginkhosi Khanyile‚ an Economic Freedom Fighters-aligned student leader.

While addressing students outside the Berea Res on the campus‚ he added that the students would also take action if police “operated with apartheid tactics”.

He also criticised media for portraying the protests and the students as violent.

An Mi7 guard overseeing the group was overhead saying: “I know I could moer 10 of them one time‚ that’s what I know.”\

I’ll end with IOL:

UKZN spokesman Lesiba Seshoka said excrement was thrown in the commerce building and subsequently a test and lecture were disrupted.

He said disciplinary action would be taken against those involved.

A lecturer, who asked to remain anonymous, said the students and all present in the venue were disgusted by the act.

“They carried the poo in plastic bags and threw it on the floor. It was also smeared on parts of the walls and on computers. It was quite disgusting,” said the lecturer.

The battle rages on.

No one is going to turn down the chance to get money off a new Apple purchase, which is why local Apple gurus Digicape are lending a helping hand.

They call it the ‘trade in trade up‘ special, and it’s all pretty simple. Put your drawer full of old phones and tablets to good use by trading them in at your local Digicape store, and get fresh moola to spend as you please.

They accept most brands of smartphone and tablet, and in return you receive a gift voucher to use towards your next Digicape purchase in-store.

I guess sometimes you don’t feel like peddling your old wares online, and handing over your previous phone to that one mate who loses three a year and refuses to insure them tends to run its course.

Trade in trade up – has a good ring to it.

On the off chance you’re running a small business, and are looking for a great deal on accounting software, they’re also running 50% off promo on Xero.

Sign up for the deal and you’ll stand a chance to win one of five iPad Air 2’s – find out more HERE.

Kiernan <![CDATA[Zach Galifianakis Explains Why Trump Will Never Be On ‘Between Two Ferns’]]> http://www.2oceansvibe.com/?p=318069 2016-09-27T11:27:44Z 2016-09-27T11:30:00Z You want the long answer or the short answer, because the short answer is rather rude? We’ll go with the longer one, then.

After the success of Hillary on “Between Two Ferns”, there’s an obvious allure to have the Orange Menace come on board.

You can see Hillary and Zach HERE – she may have joked that she regretted going on the show, but with over 30 million views in the first 24 hours it set a Funny or Die record.

First let’s hear what Zach had to say about Hillary’s appearance, with this below from the LA Times:

She was very game, and the fact that she was sick that day – having that knowledge and watching the news when everybody was kind of wondering what was going on, it just kind of makes you laugh…

But I was very impressed with her. I can’t say that she probably has the same thing to say about me. [Laughs] We chatted about a book I didn’t expect her to know about. We kind of bonded over this book called “Amusing Ourselves to Death” [by Neil Postman].

I walked away from that whole interview going, “She’s cool.” I thought she was cool, and I don’t know if that was my impression of her before that.

And then they asked whether or not Trump might be making an appearance:

No. That doesn’t interest me. Doing it the other way doesn’t interest me. He’s the kind of guy who likes attention – bad attention or good attention. So you’re dealing with a psychosis there that’s a little weird.

I wouldn’t have somebody on that’s so mentally challenged. I feel like I’d be taking advantage of him. And you can print that.

That’s a pretty big claim coming from someone who starred in the abomination that was The Hangover Part 3, but I find it hard to disagree.

It’s a pity, because the cringe factor of a Trump appearance on ‘Between Two Ferns’ would have been quite something to watch.

Once the sun decides to stick around longer than a few days our Webers will get a real working over, which is why we’ve been lending a helping hand with a few braai recipes you might not have otherwise thought of.

2OV DJ Aimee Eveleigh and celeb chef Peter Goffe-Wood have been cooking up a storm as part of the Weber Braai series, and their latest offering promises to be a tasty (and healthy) treat.

It’s one most of us should be able to manage without much hassle – chicken satays with a peanut dipping sauce.

We’ll keep it simple – and go….

 • Buy skinless chicken breasts and cut the breasts into long, thing slices.
 • Thread the slices through the sosatie sticks like a ribbon, weaved through.
 • Soak the sticks in cold water before you use them – the bamboo stops the chicken from burning if it’s moist.
 • Use chilli, fresh lime juice, and garlic and olive oil as a marinade one hour before.

Sauce

 • 350g smooth peanut butter (sugar-free, although you can also use macadamia or almond butter)
 • 100ml Kikoman soy sauce – only use this brand
 • 5 tablespoons lime juice
 • 5 tablespoons sesame oil
 • Preserved ginger – pink, three pieces
 • Three tablespoons of the ginger liquid from jar
 • 1 chilli
 • 2 cloves of garlic
 • 100ml of water

Blend it ALL up into a paste in the blender, then pop the satays on the grill. Once done, serve with the blend as a dipping sauce and enjoy something a little different.

It’s time for Aimee and Peter to take it away:

Tune in to 2OV Radio every Wednesday between 14:00 and 15:15 to keep up to date with what the chef extraordinaire has in store for us.

Over in Rajasthan, India a python was captured and removed from a school, which is when Ashok Bishnoi thought he’d snap his selfie.

All looks to be going according to plan, but those handling the snake have somehow inexplicably left its head unattended.

Cue panic:

From ruining Penny Sparrow’s life for her awful ‘monkey’ New Year’s post, to denouncing anything that touches a nerve as offensive, there’s no denying that it’s a place in which one is advised to exercise great caution.

Then there are the memes – oh, the glorious memes – that accompany every major world event. The Trump versus Clinton presidential debate (HERE) certainly qualifies as such an event, with more than 100 million watching in America alone.

We’ve already seen the Trump sniffing jokes (HERE), but let’s take a look at what else had peeps flexing their funny bones.

Sure you do. It was the movie our golden girl Charlize Theron won an Oscar for in 2004, after gaining around 14 kg to play serial killer Aileen Wuornos.

Well, Theron is back at it for her role in her latest project Tully. However, unlike the crime drama Monster, Tully is a comedy about a mother of three who is gifted with the help of a night nanny by her brother.

Hesitant to the extravagance at first, she comes to form a unique bond with the thoughtful, surprising and sometimes challenging young nanny named…Tully.

For the role, Theron has once again gained a little bit weight. Can anyone say method acting?

The comedy is written by Juno-famed Diablo Cody, and directed by Jason Reitman. The trio previously worked on 2011’s Young Adult – but let’s just hope this will be a lot better than that.

If you can’t see the change in Theron’s physique, here’s a side-by-side comparison.

In an effort to boost the local industry, the city made an advert featuring a girl, a swimming pool, and an eel.

Unfortunately, it quickly received criticism for demeaning women.

You see, the advert features a youngish girl swimming around a pool. Narrated by a soft, almost creepy male voice with gentle piano in the background, he says:

I decided I would do anything for her as much as I could.

I fed her with lots of delicious food. I let her sleep well.

During the ad the girl sleeps in a tent next to a fire, plays with a hula hoop and at one point comes up to the camera and says “feed me.” At the end, before she jumps into the pool, she offers a cheery “goodbye”.

Cut to a scene featuring an eel at the bottom of said pool, cut to a scene of said eel in a frying pan, during which the narrator then says:

We’re growing eels carefully.

Don’t believe me? Please watch:

So what’s the problem? Well, if you can’t see it, one Twitter user summed it up perfectly:

This makes me think of a girl who is being kidnapped and locked up…it’s the delusions of a pervert.

Stung by criticism, city officials pulled the ad, with a local official telling AFP:

We’re aware that some people were offended. We just wanted to make a video that simply explains the city is known for eel farming.

Well that advert will sure make the city well known for one thing, and I don’t think it will be eels just yet.

I said ooh girl / Shock me like an electric eel

As soon as the iPhone 7 generation came out, along with the confirmation it doesn’t have a headphone jack, people were pretty upset. When people soon realised there was a dongle that could be used to attach their favourite brand of headphones, they were still upset.

Then, YouTuber TechRax released a video that would change their lives…for the worse.

Watch:

You see, although you might realise the video above is obviously a prank, many people took it seriously and actually drilled a hole into their brand new iPhone 7.

The results were heartbreakingly hilarious:

screen-shot-2016-09-27-at-8-17-08-am

Download the headphone jack app. Priceless.

Worst of all, however, were the Interweb trolls that egged on those who were interested in doing it:

screen-shot-2016-09-27-at-8-16-59-am

Who are these guys?

Please people, when the iPhone 7 hits South African stores, don’t get a drill and try create a headphone jack. IT WILL NOT WORK.

Unless you use an Apple drill.

KIDDING. Kidding, kidding.

As we all knew would happen, social media was waiting to pounce on anything odd and have a little fun with it. Given the scrutiny around Hillary’s health (HERE) of late, it’s slightly ironic that Trump with a case of the sniffles quickly went viral.

Someone even went through the effort of compiling all the sniffs into one video – we’ll watch that before we see Twitter having a field day:

A parody account quickly popped up, and other Twitter users hopped on board:

trumpsnifflessss

Still, quite some way from the most famous sniff in cinematic history:

And the most famous sniff the internet has ever seen:

I’ve never seen Trump sniff his own finger and fall from a tree, but I have seen him mock a reporter with physical disabilities:

I find the behaviour of the monkey more socially acceptable.

The ride-hailing taxi service is now on a mission to develop aircrafts that are able to take off and land without a runway, and fly passengers wherever they want to go.

Oh, and they won’t need pilots because they will be able to pilot themselves. Pretty sweet, right?

Kind of, until you see VTOL X-Plane Phase 2 Concept Video. The aircraft is a bit bulky, to be honest.

Thankfully it’s only phase II, but according to Uber’s head of product, Jeff Holden:

The company is looking into what are called VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) aircraft, which might sound a bit like a helicopter, but they generally refer to planes with fixed wings.

There aren’t a lot of these types of aircraft out there, because it takes a large amount of energy to get a plane off the ground without giving it a running start – you’ve either got to use jet engines (like the Harrier Jump Jet) or massive propellers (like the V-22 Osprey).

This follows Uber’s introduction of self-driving cars to Pittsburgh at the end of last month, but the cars still have a long way to go before they are introduced into other cities.

The planes are only set to be a real thing in about 10 years or so, which is probably a very good thing as they really need to work on the design.

Also, the US has really strict guidelines when it comes to their airspace as well as the craft allowed to fly in it and according to Quartz:

Uber would need develop an entirely new type of aircraft and have it approved by a country’s aviation authority. That seems like a particularly daunting challenge for a company that has only had a robotics research facility for a little over a year.

So let’s see what they have to offer in 2026. Self-driving drones, here we come!

I’m sure there are a great deal of you out there who enjoyed a braai on Heritage Day, which unfortunately fell on a Saturday this year and denied us all an extra day off work.

I’m also sure there were a number of conversations repeated around the country – what’s wrong with the Boks, why do people care about Brangelina so much – you know the drill.

At some point someone might have brought up the #FeesMustFall movement, and depending on who your braai buddies are opinions would have varied greatly.

Over at the Rand Daily Mail is a chap called Justice Malala, who has become one of the more celebrated political analysts the country has to offer. I’m not saying your fireside rant was ill-informed, but Justice might bring a more rounded opinion to the table.

feesjusticemalala2

Hit it:

The truth is that a small, radical, violent elite is intimidating everyone else into silence. Legitimate student struggles — lack of access and funds — have been hijacked by this small minority to wreak havoc at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, where a library was burnt down, and other places…

There is now no institution which has not seen infrastructure burnt down, looting and harassment on a grand scale. Those who hold a view contrary to that of this minority are intimidated into silence…

Case in point this from IOL, a WhatsApp message sent out to all UKZN Pietermaritzburg campus students:

The message read: “Please be warned that if you are seen on campus with a bag or books from Monday to Friday you will be dealt with. We advise you to strike with us or be against us… those who are against will be dealt with”…

“We are so scared,” said an anxious student. “Burning things down is not going to help. Who is going to help us rebuild? This whole protest has just gone from bad to worse. The cause is lost.”

Anyway, back to Justice Malala:

We cannot be for the burning of university libraries and science laboratories while we claim to be for education. We cannot be for progress while we glorify violent, sexist, backward behaviour. We cannot be for our children and yet keep silent or applaud as their future goes up in flames.

It is time to stop this in its tracks. It is time for government to support the vice-chancellors. It is time for student activists to isolate these violent elements. It is time for the police to enforce the law — identify, arrest and prosecute those who break the law. It is time to acknowledge that not all within this movement is right and upstanding, that it has a streak and factions that undermine everything that it stands for.

It might be fashionable to justify some of the things that are happening within the #FeesMustFall movement. But the truth is that a non-elected minority (these are people who are not in the student representative councils, for example) is holding our children, our future, hostage.

The heroes are not those who shout loudest today and shut down those they disagree with. Our heroes, when we look back at this period, must be those who stand up now and say in this democracy there are legitimate spaces for engagement and we must use them with responsibility and care. We need to talk, not burn. We need to find solutions, not try to be rebels without a cause.

It seems to me that many people write off the #FeesMustFall movement on the back of this violent minority, with all of their demands deemed irrational as a result.

The destruction, the burning, the disruptions – these need to be dealt with, as Malala makes clear, because at its (increasingly shrinking and overshadowed) core is something that really may leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.

Who knows how those 20 years down the line will look back at all this, but if the violent elite is left to hold the rest of our students hostage it may not be with too much fondness.

The online retail store just proves how you don’t have to rebuild your house to go green, because minor additions can slowly help you improve your carbon footprint.

After all, with the rising costs of electricity and the detrimental affects humans are having on the environment, I get a little envious when I hear of countries who have an excess of generated power.

Truth is, it takes every individual to make these types of things work.

Having been in the business since 2002, Sustainble.co.za is the country’s longest operating online eco-store, so they know what is up. Not only do they source just what you need, but they consolidate and deliver to your door. Easy as pie.

Here are a few of the really cool products they have on offer, which you can add to your house without any hassle:

LED Lights with a 25-year warranty

Kiernan <![CDATA[Let’s Look Closer At The Outrageous R11 Million Bonus Hlaudi Motsoeneng Just Banked]]> http://www.2oceansvibe.com/?p=317889 2016-09-26T15:00:19Z 2016-09-26T13:20:25Z It must be fun to wield complete, unadulterated control over something like the SABC.

Of course that would be Mandoza funeral ruiner Hlaudi Motsoeneng – if that seems like an odd title to bestow upon the man then you should see his antics from Friday (HERE) before we carry on.

We also touched on the ongoing suspension / redeployment saga in that story, where the SABC look set to once again ignore the findings of both the Supreme Court of Appeals (SCA) and the Public Prosecutor and instate Hlaudi as acting Chief Operations Officer (COO).

A little summary of that from News24:

A letter confirming his redeployment to a senior position as group executive for corporate affairs had already been sent to Motsoeneng…

According to four well-placed and independent sources at the SABC, Motsoeneng will then be asked to act in the vacant position of COO – putting him right back where the courts said he should not be…

The intention to allow Motsoeneng to act in his former position flies in the face of the SCA decision and is despite the presidency releasing a statement this week that it noted and respected the SCA ruling.

That’s obviously disheartening, but let’s talk about this massive bonus that just lined his pockets:

Impeccable sources have independently confirmed that a sum of R11.4 million was this week paid to Motsoeneng in two payments of R5.7 million as commission or a bonus for his handling of the controversial R500 million SABC deal with MultiChoice to create SABC channels on DStv. “And that’s not an accurate amount,” said a source. “What he was paid was R11.4 million after tax, not before tax.”

Highly placed sources also revealed that this was not Motsoeneng’s entire commission package for the MultiChoice deal – which they said would total R33 million over three years

A member of the board insisted that “the full board had never approved” a bonus for Motsoeneng for the Multichoice deal…

“If they paid him that, then it is illegal,” said one of the board members. “It goes against the SABC’s own policy.”

Of course the SABC have denied making this payment (reported on eNCA), but is it really that hard to imagine Hlaudi landing that cash without the appropriate approval?

hlaudsbonusss2

If you’re wondering how one man has so much power let’s head over at the Mail & Guardian, who spoke to a former SABC board member:

“Hlaudi has stripped that organisation of any talent and that guy who is a [chief executive] or [chief financial officer] is totally clueless. That place cannot operate without Hlaudi – he’s made sure of that.

“They can’t simply get rid of him because everyone who is there is so used to being dictated to: ‘Wena turn left, wena turn right.’ Even the colour of the pens they buy is probably dictated by Hlaudi.”

A R33 million bonus and complete power due to working with clueless staff – living the dream, Hlaudi.

But wait, there’s more:

A source said that it was fairly common knowledge within the SABC that Motsoeneng had also been promised a huge “bonus” for his work in allegedly winning back the right to broadcast Bafana Bafana matches on the public broadcaster.

An award named in his honour? Naturally:

Explaining how he managed to implement his controversial 90% local content quota across the SABC’s broadcast platforms, Motsoeneng said he had put the idea to the SABC board but had lost the vote.

“However, I showed them that I might not have a matric but I am very clever. In the end it’s me who has to make a final decision and I did exactly that,” Motsoeneng was quoted as saying…

For his efforts he was given a lifetime achievement award by the South African Traditional Music Awards, which also named an award after him “for life”.

The mind absolutely boggles at the handling of this whole mess, and it just seems so outlandish that one man can wield such control at an organisation like the SABC.

Then again, you only need to look at JZ to know that some South Africans are prepared to close ranks around rotten apples – as long as there’s something in there for them, too.

Then I realised that videos like the one below might be having a minor affect on my psyche.

The latest horror shot doing the rounds involves two taxis. A dashcam captures a taxi overtaking a vehicle illegally, before swerving out of control into oncoming traffic.

I mean, the guy overtakes on the left hand side? What even is that?

You can clearly see one person being thrown from a vehicle, although it is not clear exactly which part of SA the footage is from.

According to Arrive Alive, nearly 650 accidents involving minibus taxis have occurred in the country since 2013.

That’s not that many compared to the alarming road-related deaths we have, but it’s still averaging around 200 a year and involves vehicles that transport large numbers of people at once.

Canadian PM Justin Trudeau is a pretty popular leader, but he does have a habit of botching greetings with the cameras watching.

Case in point in THIS from back in June, when an America / Canada / Mexico three-way left everyone looking a little silly.

This time around it was the Royals touching down in Canada, although wee Prince George was in no mood to dish out the high fives.

The fun starts from around the 20-second mark below:

Here’s The Star with an overview of how the British media ate this one up:

The Mirror wrote: “Superstar politician Mr. Trudeau might have endeared himself to millions online through his outspoken feminism, support for diversity and willingness to embrace Internet memes, but it seems to take more than that to impress Will and Kate’s eldest.”

Similar reports were done by The Independent, with a story headlined: “Prince George leaves Justin Trudeau hanging after he goes for a high-five.”

The Daily Mail shared a story with the headline: “Sorry, one doesn’t high-five with commoners.”

The Telegraph also took note of the incident with a story headlined: “Prince George and Princess Charlotte revel in a little mischief on Canadian tour.”

Someone tell little George he better raise his game – no one likes a snooty brat.

In the last month, Americans have celebrated seven national days relating to food, such as National Baby Back Ribs Day, National Cheese Pizza Day and National “I Love Food” Day to name a few.

While South Africans may not take part in these ad hoc celebrations, the images posted to social media promoting them leave our mouths watering for more.

Debra Nessel, a registered dietitian with Torrance Memorial Medical Center in California, explained:

With these holidays, many people eat up simply because some part of their brain believes they will never have this opportunity again, and that to miss out would be something to regret in the future.

It doesn’t matter how healthy they try to eat, they become a clean-ice-cream-tub club member, no matter how full they are.

And it’s true, the celebration of unhealthy food is much more attractive than that of healthy options. URWhatYouPost.com tracked 185.8 million food-related hashtags on Twitter and Instagram in the past three months, and here’s what they found:

65.9 percent refer to unhealthy foods. The #butter hashtag alone was used more than 7 million times in the past 90 days.

(FYI, #brusselssprout barely brought in 50,000.)

This has led to a phenomenon called “visual hunger”, where we are left wanting to eat something, anything in fact, because we have seen something delicious on our feed. The Daily Beast explains:

Food porn does that by tapping into various regions of the brain, including the limbic system, which controls basic emotions as well as our drive for hunger, explains Manhattan-based addictions psychologist Paul Hokemeyer, PhD. “Social media food holidays manipulate people into believing that food is something to be indulged in rather than something used for nourishment. They fetishize food and make it an object, rather than a tool to be used for the betterment and health of oneself.”

So what do you do?

You unfollow and unfriend all those people who promote unhealthy lifestyles – or you can train yourself to respond to images by saying “Oooooh, that looks good, but I don’t need it right now” instead of “OMG I GET IN MY BELLY!”

The last option is probably the way you should go because it’s always good to know whats on offer, especially from local restaurants such as these:

We’ve seen Making A Murderer blow up, The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story won nine Emmy Awards, and there are no fewer than three specials planned to analyse the now 20-year-old case of murdered beauty queen JonBenét Ramsey.

The six-year-old girl was found beaten and strangled in her home in 1996, and the case captured the imagination of America.

The dramatic effort we’ll focus on here is from the Lifetime network, and Huffington Post aren’t sure it’s going to sit well with everyone:

Unlike CBS’ miniseries “The Case Of: JonBenét Ramsey,” which at least attempts to solve the murder with actual evidence (though it reaches dubious conclusions), Lifetime’s movie steers well clear of reality. It recreates Ramsey’s final days and the ensuing investigation into her murder with actors in the HIGHLY dramatic fashion we’ve come to expect from the network that gifted the world “Liz & Dick.”

In the trailer, released on Friday, young actress Payton Lepinski, playing Ramsey, narrates the unabashedly exploitative tale, which features a lot of serious acting and totally authentic dialogue like “What you do in the next 24 hours is going to decide the rest of your life.”

I’m sure it will get the ratings it desires, but it may fall somewhat short on critical acclaim.

Then there’s those sets who take things just a little too far, like Karl Smith and Kevin Dugar.

Despite their different last names (Karl chose his mother’s maiden name) the 38-year-olds are near impossible to tell apart, and those similarities also carry across into their lives of crime.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports:

Growing up the men behaved like “one person,” sharing socks, shoes and food. By the time the men grew up, they were active gang members who sold drugs and impersonated one another.

twincrimsss

“We was acting as one,” Smith [left above] told the court, according to the Tribune. “Where I was, he was, acting like each other. He pretended to be me, and I pretended to be him.”

Smith testified that he never admitted to the 2003 killing of Antwan Carter, not even when his brother had been accused of the killing and was preparing for trial, according to the Tribune.

It wasn’t until three years ago, Smith said, that he finally wrote his brother a letter admitting to the crime.

“I have to get it off my chest before it kills me,” Smith wrote. “So I’ll just come clean and pray you can forgive me. … I’m the one who and shot and killed those two Black Stones on Sheridan that night.”

“The reason I didn’t say [expletive] at the time was because I didn’t and couldn’t find the strength to do so at the time,” he wrote in a second letter.

Karl has now admitted to the murders in court, murders that his brother has been in custody for since 2003. The thing is not everyone’s buying it though, because Karl is already serving a 99-year sentence for an armed robbery that resulted in the death of a six-year-old.

“He’s got nothing to lose,” Assistant State’s Attorney Carol Rogala told Judge Vincent Gaughan, according to the Tribune, noting that Smith’s confession didn’t “fit the independent eyewitness accounts of what happened”…

If a judge decides Smith’s story is credible, his brother would be given a new trial for the 13-year-old killing, which took place on Chicago’s North side.

There is one person who has no doubt the men are telling the truth: their mother.

“He wouldn’t lie about that,” Judy Dugar, referring to Smith, told the Tribune.

I dunno mom, seems like your terrible twosome are more than capable of a few untruths.

We thought we would see where other Pom-bashers Australia and New Zealand stand on the matter, and it turns out there’s two pretty landmark rulings on the matter.

We’re going to start with Wikipedia but don’t stress, we’ll dig a little deeper:

The terms Pommy, Pommie and Pom, in Australia, South Africa and New Zealand usually denotes an English person (or, less commonly, people from other parts of the UK).

The Oxford Dictionary defines their use as “often derogatory” but after complaints to the Australian Advertising Standards Board (ASB) regarding five advertisements poking fun at “Poms”, the board ruled in 2006 that these words are inoffensive, in part because they are “largely used in playful or affectionate terms”. The New Zealand Broadcasting Standards Authority made a similar ruling in 2010.

Despite these rulings, the terms are considered offensive and derogatory by many British, regardless of context.

Lekker, but let’s talk more about that 2006 ruling taken by the Ozzie ASB:

The community organisation, British People Against Racial Discrimination, was among several complainants who had objected to the use of the word ‘Pom’ as a ‘derogatory’, ‘offensive’ and ‘racist’ slur.

The Advertising Standards Board gave careful consideration to whether the ads breached the section of the Advertiser Code of Ethics dealing with discrimination and vilification.

pombashing2

In deliberating on the complaints, the Board considered that the use of the word ‘Pom’ is part of the Australian vernacular, which is largely used in playful and often affectionate terms.

The Board also found that ‘Pom’ is not used in a way to vilify, or incite racial hostility towards, people of British extraction, particularly when considered in the context of the cricketing tradition and affectionate rivalry between the two countries.

The Board unanimously dismissed the complaints against the five ads.

See, no need to cringe when you hear a local call out a British tourist ahead of the impending summer influx.

While you’re around, let’s all enjoy one more laugh at the Pom’s expense about that Euro exit to Iceland (HERE).

Six self-service checkout counters have now been introduced at a PnP in Observatory, which has sparked fear that a nationwide roll-out will cost thousands their jobs.

The company itself is denying these claims, but even employees at the self-same branch aren’t buying it. Here’s Fin24:

“We are worried,” said a staff member who was helping shoppers negotiate the self-service counters.

Cosatu spokesperson Sizwe Pamla said the trade union federation did not trust Pick n Pay’s promises.

“In fact, we are suspicious,” said Pamla.

“We believe it wants to get rid of its workers. We don’t think it’s helpful in an economy that has collapsed – technically, we are in a recession – to be introducing mechanisms that threaten workers.”

Here’s the first pic that started doing the rounds on social media:

pickpaycashauto

Strategy and corporate affairs group executive David North responded to some concerns in an emailed statement:

North did say that Pick n Pay was “always looking at new ways to help our customers by making their shopping trip easier and more convenient”, and was testing the self-service checkouts to see if they saved customers time at the till.

He said the self-service checkouts were an additional service that would not replace traditional checkouts and it would take six months to complete the trial and analyse the results before deciding whether the retailer wanted to introduce them in other stores.

Just wait until you’re shopping with the folks and you have to talk your dad through using some form of new technology. That right there is when the wheels come off…

Since then he has won multiple awards, including the recent BET Award for Best International Act.

AKA, on the other hand, is a fledgling in comparison.

During the early morning of Sunday, Black Coffee was filmed slapping AKA’s road manager, Tshiamo Letshwene. During the incident, you can see Black Coffee speaking to two men and his temper building to a slap.

Watch:

According to sources, the altercation happened because AKA was two hours late for his performance at 2016 DStv iRock Festival in Polokwane on Saturday night.

screen-shot-2016-09-26-at-9-12-16-am

AKA wanted to then perform during Black Coffee’s set, and his team began soundcheck while Black Coffee’s team was on stage doing the same thing. That did not go down well with Black Coffee, resulting in the incident.

Of course, the arrogant AKA went to Twitter to share his thoughts on the matter:

Now you ask anyone to name their four greatest athletes of all time and you’re going to have some head scratching, but Bolt has never been one to shy away from giving his honest opinion.

Here’s TIME with how the exchange went down:

We asked him to wade in: Who do you think are the four greatest athletes of all-time? Who’s on your Mount Rushmore?

“Oh my God,” Bolt says, before tilting his head down to think up a list. Muhammad Ali, he mentions first. Then Michael Jordan. Followed by Pele. Bolts look up. “And me,” Bolt says.

What’s his case? “I’ve accomplished something that no one has ever done before,” says Bolt. Besides his nine Olympic golds—over nine straight races in Beijing, London and Rio—Bolt also holds the world records in the 100-m and 200-m. “I’m comfortable to say I’m a legend, because I’ve done great things.”

Well it’s not like Ali and Pele were particularly modest, so at least he’s in good company.

I suppose we should all enjoy the Usain Bolt show while it lasts, because all good things must eventually come to an end.

This is according to kung fu Master Li Liangui, who claims he is the last of his kind, and that when he dies “the art will be completely gone.”

Liangui chatted to Quartz about his practice of Suogugong, also known as ‘body shrinking kung fu’.

Although he was successful teaching the practice outside of China, now that Liangui is back in the country there is very little interest from anyone:

There’s a time and a place to speak out against your detractors, and the funeral of a beloved musician is not that place.

Someone should have told (current) former SABC COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng that, because instead of using his time at the podium to honour Mandoza he went off on another tirade.

I guess he can’t turn off his tyrannical rantings, and although much of his rambling is met with approval in the clip below his antics won’t sit well with everyone.

Here’s part of his speech from the funeral earlier this morning:

As for his position as SABC COO, here’s the latest from News24:

On Tuesday, Motsoeneng reported for duty at the public broadcaster an “ordinary employee”, after the Supreme Court of Appeal rejected his bid for leave to appeal against a High Court ruling that set aside his permanent appointment.

“He tended to his services this morning,” his lawyer Zola Majavu told News24 at the time.

The SABC board then recommend to Communications Minister Faith Muthambi that she appoint former COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng as acting COO until December.

This comes after Public Protector Thuli Madonsela found in a report released in February 2014 that Motsoeneng lied about his qualifications when he applied for the post of COO, that he hiked his salary from R1.5m to R2.4m in one year, and purged senior staff.

Despite these adverse findings, Muthambi confirmed his permanent appointment by the board.

Honestly, what dirt does he have on Faith and his other supporters that they’ll basically lift their leg on the Supreme Court of Appeal’s ruling?

More on the mess from IOL:

Internal correspondence leaked to The Star says he has been appointed COO for three months – from September 19 to December 18…

The communications ministry says it has not seen the correspondence…

Opposition parties have said that the board was undermining the Supreme Court of Appeal’s ruling by trying to appoint Motsoeneng through the back door.

The board appeared to be divided after one member of the board, Krish Naidoo, publicly came out against attempts by his fellow board members to reinstate Motsoeneng as the acting COO.

Lies, lies and more lies. Hit it, Zapiro…

Sad that every court ruling has to include such an asterisk, but I guess these are the times we live in.

We know that much of what stems from African shores is often shipped overseas and flogged for profit, but how about bringing some products down south and seeing how they fare here at home?

We asked around, we did a little digging, there was some tapping away on the keyboard – and who knows, maybe we’ve found your latest business venture?

Below are four ideas that a little import / export know-how might turn into serious cash flow – we’ll take our cut at a later stage.

Silversmiths of Northern Mozambique

berryimportsgame

We’re not talking about importing the silversmiths themselves, don’t be daft.

For centuries, artisans on Ibo Island off the northern coast of Mozambique have been hand-crafting silver jewellery using ancient techniques passed down from father to son.

This jewellery is found nowhere else in the world, and it’s the kind of things locals and tourists alike might well gobble up.

Handblown glassware from Swaziland

berryimportsgame234

The skills of Swaziland’s glassblowers have become on of the country’s major tourists attractions.

Both men and women, using age old artistry, have honed their skills and fine-tuned the art of producing animals of the African continent. Even better, many use recycled glass.

You trying to tell me people visiting South African wouldn’t leave with a few whale tails in their bag?

Palm Oil from Sierra Leone

berryimportsgame2

There has been much uproar around the importing of palm oils to South Africa in recent years, given that much of the world’s supply comes from the likes of Indonesia and Malaysia.

Rainforests are cleared to make way for the trees, and species like elephants, tigers, rhinos and the critically endangered orangutans are under threat.’

Palm oil is also produced in Sierra Leone, being farmed in a responsible manner and used to rebuild the economy post-Ebola.

You know there’s a demand for sustainable palm oil around these parts – could be worth a shot.

Blankets from Lesotho

berryimportsgame2345

If you’re a South African you would probably have seen Basotho blankets before, but it’s only recently that they are garnering attention for their beautiful designs overseas.

They’ve inspired designs on the runways of Paris, and some fashionistas have even used them as inspiration for bomber jackets and other items.

I kinda feel like every South African household should have one, given their beauty and our border-sharing with Swaziland.

Worth taking a punt before the market becomes saturated? Seems like there’s moola to be made.

I can see plenty of you sitting there thinking ‘yeah, but who even knows where to begin with the import / export game?’

It’s true, the logistics involved would make most of us shiver at the knees, but that’s why you enlist the help of professionals.

Find your supplier, pick your goodies, enlist the help of Berry & Donaldson – sit back and watch the money roll in.

Here’s what they handle:

 • International Sea and Air Freight Forwarding
 • Customs Clearing
 • Warehousing (Bonded and Duty Paid)
 • Cartage (Deliveries)
 • Project Freight
 • Marine and Airfreight Insurance

Yeah, that will tick the necessary boxes.

Time to start your import empire – just don’t forget about us, we did point you in the right direction after all.

It appears no one had the courage to tell Hillary that, because she went ahead with her appearance on “Between Two Ferns” with host Zach Galifianakis.

Maybe she watched the Obama episode from 2014 and thought she could reach young, undecided voters by chatting to Zach, but she had to know there would be much mocking from the host.

That bit about regret? Here’s CNN:

Galifianakis also asked if Clinton will lead the civil war if Trump wins. Clinton says, “No, I wouldn’t take up arms. I think that might be a little extreme.”

“Oh right, because you were saying before we were rolling that you wanted to take away everyone’s guns. Very cool,” Galifianakis jokes.

“I really regret doing this,” Clinton says.

OK, so I guess she was kinda joking about the regret part. Settle in – good luck sitting through this:

There are no plans to have Trump appear on the show any time soon, which I actually find kind of sad.

Let us now direct your attention to Broc Brown, who at the tender age of 19 already dwarfs the likes of Eben Etzebeth and Lood de Jager.

Brown measures in at a whopping 2,33 metres tall, and he’s only growing taller. That measurement has landed him the world record for tallest teen, and given that he is currently growing at a rate of 15cm per year the sky is the limit.

This below from Stuff:

brocbbb2

Brown, who lives in Michigan, has a genetic disorder called Sotos Syndrome, which he was diagnosed with at age 5.

His mother says he was around 157cm tall when he was in Kindergarten.

“It’s a genetic disorder and there’s nothing that can stop him from growing – I don’t know if he will ever stop,” Darci Brown said…

The disorder affects one in every 15,000 people and has left Brown with a range of health problems, including strain on his heart, curvature of the spine and learning difficulties. He was also born with one kidney and is therefore unable to take painkillers…

brocbbb23

“I just wish the doctors could do something to help my pain,” said Brown.

There are also financial implications that come with being the world’s tallest teen. All of Brown’s clothes and shoes have to be specially made, as he has size 28 feet. He’s also had a special bed and chair made.

Will he soon become the tallest living man? Given that current record holder Sultan Kosen stands at 2.51m tall, that record may come sooner rather than later.

Disney Pulled This ‘Brown Skin’ Costume]]> http://www.2oceansvibe.com/?p=317577 2016-09-23T11:25:43Z 2016-09-23T13:30:53Z We know that 2016 is a year that has already taken a few beloved musicians, and that’s not to mention the political farce going on over in the United States.

It’s also the year of the PC police / social media backlash, and it’s becoming increasingly common to see big companies issuing apologies and pulling products once the Twitterati attack.

Disney is set to release the movie Moana shortly, which has already come under scrutiny for its depiction of Pacific Island cultures. During the PR push they thought a Halloween costume might be a good idea, a decision they soon came to regret.

The lead character, Maui, would be that chap up top – the costume sold by Disney, below:

moanadisss2

The costume was panned, with this from TIME:

The company said Thursday that it is pulling the costume of Maui(voiced by Dwayne Johnson in the film) from its website and stores after it sparked outrage earlier this week. The outfit consists of a brown bodysuit with tattoos.

“The team behind Moana has taken great care to respect the cultures of the Pacific Islands that inspired the film, and we regret that the Maui costume has offended some,” Disney said in a statement…

More on the matter from The Blaze:

While the tattoos depicted in the costume as well as the jewelry were intended to highlight the ancient Polynesian culture, some Pacific Islanders were offended by the ensemble, saying it promoted “Polyface,” so Disney decided to remove the outfit from its stores.

Chelsie Hunan Fairchild, who described herself as a “livid” native Hawaiian of Polynesian decent, said the costume is a perfect example of cultural appropriation…Fairchild said it was wrong for Disney to promote children pretending to be another race.

“It’s disgusting,” she said. “[Disney] literally thinks it’s OK to have children dress up as other races. How is that not offensive at all? … This is inappropriate. It’s not OK.”

Do you agree with Chelsie, or do you think 2016 has gone a little too far with policing costumes such as this?

I’m not Polynesian, so I’ll moonwalk my way out of the room and leave this one well alone.

If your interest is piqued then here’s the trailer:

You know, just in case it comes back.

Or maybe you prefer painkillers as they make life pass by a little easier, a little simpler, a little further away from reality.

It may not be obvious to you, but you aren’t the only one addicted to codeine.

According to a study to be presented at a Public Health Association conference in East London, cough mixtures and painkillers are the drugs of choice for many South Africans.

The sad thing is that many people are unaware that it’s the codeine they’ve become addicted to – until they start constantly looking for their “helper,” that is.

Many abusers shop at pharmacies to avoid being discovered, and some children in Durban are combining cough mix and painkillers to create “toxic party drugs”. What even?

Not too sure what exactly codeine is? According to iol:

Codeine is a methylated morphine derivative that occurs in the poppy seed. It can have sedative and euphoric effects.

Here are a few signs if you have a drug problem:

Please go check yourself before you wreck yourself, although I completely understand it is up to you to free yourself from the addiction.

It’s really boring now, but I guess for many the battle still continues.

But not for Ashley Graham.

Building a career on being shamelessly body-positive, the “plus-size” model stripped down for the pages of Grazia UK.

As the spread progresses, Graham loses more items of clothing until there’s nothing left other than a sneaky little tat.
