Last night saw the closing ceremony of the Paralympics in London. Coldplay performed and were joined by Rihanna and Jay-Z. Their song “Paradise” has become the the unofficial anthem of the Games over the past 12 days. This year saw 4 200 Paralympians from 164 different countries take part. All the action inside.

Last night saw the opening ceremony of the Paralymic Games in London. Professor Stephen Hawking took centre stage and led a host of deaf and disabled artists, local children and performers newly trained in circus skills. Sir Ian McKellen also acted scenes from Shakespeare’s The Tempest in the role of Prospero, and a 430-strong deaf choir had sung God Save the Queen – who also happened to be there. How’s this for a new low? The King of Jordan intervened in the case of three of his country’s Paralympians accused of sex crimes. The men – two wheelchair powerlifters and a trainer – are accused of sexual assault and voyeurism against women and CHILDREN. However, thanks to King Abdullah they were freed yesterday to compete in next week’s Paralympic Games.

Team SA arrived back in South Africa this morning. They landed at OR Tambo International Airport after taking part in the Olympic Games in London. Last night the 2012 Olympics came to a grand end with the official closing ceremony. A scale model of London took centre stage and was wrapped entirely in newspaper. Damien Hirst interpreted the Union Flag by using members of the crowd, and black London cabs performed a taxi ballet.

On Friday, cyclists from the “Critical Mass” cycling campaign defied police instructions not to go ahead with their monthly cycle on the eve of the Olympic opening ceremony. This ended up in brawls between police officers and cyclists in central London, resulting in 130 people being arrested.
