  • DANNY CIPRIANI AND JOSH LEWSEY PUNCH-UP

08 Oct 2008 by Seth Rotherham in Rugby

England and London Wasps rugby players, Danny Cipriani (currently tapping Kelly Brooke) and Josh Lewsey, apparently got into a bit of a barney at training this week.

    Telegraph.co.uk reports:

Wasps pair Danny Cipriani and Josh Lewsey come to blows on the training ground

Wasps team-mates Danny Cipriani and Josh Lewsey made their peace by phone last night after a training-ground bust up earlier in the day led to the England pair exchanging punches.

They have apologised for their behaviour which occurred when a training drill became over-heated and got out of control. Tempers were raised and the session was interrupted.

Cipriani, 20, has only just returned to action after a remarkably swift recovery from a serious ankle injury. His first game was against Bath last Wednesday, five months after incurring a fracture dislocation to his ankle against the same opponents. There were fears his career prospects might be in danger. However, the good work of his medical back-up team and his own well-honed state of health saw him back to fitness six weeks ahead of schedule.

If anything, the training ground incident shows that the competitive juices are flowing, perhaps because of Wasps’ dreadful start to the season. Lewsey, in particular, has been off form and has looked unlikely to regain an England place.

Such face-offs between players are not uncommon and will have been noted wryly by England manager Martin Johnson, who was rarely far from such activity himself when playing at Leicester.

It’s never nice when punch-ups occur between team mates. Personally, I was never involved in anything of the sort when I played at school. We just had such a good vibe going. When you’ve got a try-scoring machine in the team (me), the morale is so high that in-fighting is an impossibility.
