If you’re feeling like a dose of good, solid live performance, head down to the Fugard Theatre to catch Neels van Jaarsveld and co in Athol Fugard’s ‘Die Kaptein Se Tier’. That’s Afrikaans for ‘the Captain’s Tiger.’ But don’t worry too much if you barely scraped through tweede taal Afrikaans, the performance comes complete with subtitles.
The play, which also stars Erica Wessels, Owen Sejake and Graham Weir, has received rave reviews here and here.
It is the tale of a writer who boards a ship looking for adventure and experience to fuel his ambitions of completing a novel. He is enlisted as the Captain’s steward (hence the name ‘The Captain’s Tiger’) and befriends a gigantic, soft-spoken Swahili mechanic (as one does), played to perfection by Sejake. Ultimately, he gains so much more than he bargains for in this epic adventure.
The play runs until February 5th. Click here to book.
