When the world’s greatest living icon sends a message that simply says, “bring back the trophy”, AND your president dresses up in Proteas gear to send you off, you know the pressure is on. One wonders if that dreaded c-word is banned from the Proteas camp as they prepare to leave our shores in search of that ever elusive first World Cup triumph…
This from the Times of India:
Even as his doctors expressed concern that the ailing 92-year-old world icon was getting too many visitors to enable him to recover properly, President Jacob Zuma spent over an hour with him at his home on Tuesday.
Word on the street is that they spent the first five minutes doing the obligatory ‘how have you been’ and ‘what you been up to’, before settling in to debate the number seven batting spot. Not much consensus was reached after an hour of fierce discussion, except to agree that what they need is someone that can actually bat.
IOL reports that President Zuma was in good spirits as he tried to sneak into the team ahead of their departure in two weeks time. Two weeks! Too much pressure.
Said Zuma, “Go teach them a lesson… come back and hand over the trophy to Mandela. I promised him you will do your best and make the nation proud. When I talked about you, he (Mandela) smiled even more broadly. He supports you all the way and will be watching the games as much as possible on television.”
No pressure guys. No pressure.
