If you haven’t heard yet, government spokesman, Jimmy Manyi said recently that he thinks that there is an oversupply of coloured folk in the Western Cape, and that perhaps it is best if they’d shift around a bit.
He made the remarks on kykNET last year when he said: “So this over-concentration of coloureds in the Western Cape is not working for them.”
National Planning Minister Trevor Manual gave Jimmy something of a public spanking for his utterances. The Star newspaper published a letter to Manyi, where Manual calls him a “worst-order racist”.
In his letter Manual says: “Mr Manyi, you may be black, or perhaps you aren’t, because you do not accept that label and would prefer to be ‘only a Xhosa’, whatever the label you choose, I want to put it to you that your behaviour is the worst-order racist.”
Of course, the ANC youth league had a word to say on the matter and has decided that Manual is probably part of a right-wing force.
Spokesman Floyd Shivambu said: “We now do not know who Trevor Manuel represents, because his remarks falls squarely into the political agenda of right-wing political forces opposed to the African National Congress.”
At least someone sees the point here. Thanks Floyd.
I personally think there might just be a chance here that Jimmy doesn’t like that fact that the DA has got a large proportion of the coloured vote, but that’s just me.
Rights group Solidarity thinks that Jimmy is somewhat out of line in suggesting the relocation of swathes of the human populace in the Cape. It sort of makes me think of something Hendrik Verwoerd was quite keen on doing.
Cosatu isn’t too happy about what Mr Manyi’s been saying either, and put out a statement that reads: “Cosatu calls for an investigation into the conduct of Jimmy Manyi as it casts serious aspersions on his suitability for senior public office.”
