Ballem Asked To Stand Down – The Cape Bar Council has asked controversial advocate Nehemiah Ballem to refrain from practising law until the outcome of an investigation into his crude remarks to a Western Cape High Court judge. Cape Bar chairman Alasdair Sholto-Douglas said the full Bar Council had met on Thursday to discuss a complaint lodged by Judge Lee Bozalek that Ballem, questioned about his late arrival at court, replied in Afrikaans: “Jou ma se poes, man, fuck you!” Ja well. Super breeds of germs defeating science – FOR decades, scientists developed new antibiotics to beat bacteria that mutated. But no longer. Welcome to a world where the drugs don’t work. MRSA, a bacteria that causes skin infections and is resistant to antibiotics, kills about 19000 people a year in the US and a similar number in Europe. [Business Day]

No rape in triple axe murder: police – No rape had taken place prior to three axe murders in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Thursday. “The investigation has proved that there was no rape at all,” Colonel Vincent Mdunge said. Oe… [News24]

Fighting rages near Gbagbos mansion – Forces fighting on behalf of Ivory Coast’s democratically elected president, Alassane Ouattara, are reportedly close to his rival’s mansion. Violent clashes are continuing in the economic capital Abidjan between Mr Ouattara’s supporters and Laurent Gbagbo, who is refusing to leave office. [ABC]

Japan radiation leaks into groundwater – Radiation was found in groundwater just outside Japan’s stricken nuclear plant at 10,000 times the normal limit, officials at the plant announced late Thursday. The news comes as Japan’s nuclear and humanitarian crisis following a 9.0 earthquake and tsunami stretched into the third week. [Global Post]

Cape Convention Centre set for expansion into big league – The expansion, part of a R4.5 billion urban regeneration project, is set to include 10 000m of retail space, a hospital, an office tower, numerous basement parking bays, as well as the regeneration of Founder’s Garden by the provincial government, which will connect the Artscape precinct with the new, larger CTICC. A skywalk will be built over the major roads of the area to connect the new building to the current centre. [IOL Property]

SA Govt’s R6bn Libya arms push – The South African government tried to breathe new life into its moribund defence business, Denel, last year by selling R6-billion-worth of major weapons systems to Libya. The deal may have been unconsummated, perhaps because the uprising in Libya made it impossible to proceed, but the planned sale of G6-52 artillery systems, missiles, grenade launchers and anti-materiel rifles will raise fresh questions about the enforcement of the National Conventional Arms Control Act, and the close relationship between President Jacob Zuma and Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi.

Woman attacked by chimp awaits face transplant – Charla Nash, a Connecticut woman mauled by a chimpanzee two years ago, can’t see, touch or smell and struggles to eat through a straw. She’s eagerly waiting for a donor who would enable her to undergo face and hand transplant surgery. [AFP]

Google ‘not surprised’ by Microsoft allegations – Google has said it is “not surprised” that Microsoft has joined in claims that it abuses its dominance of the web search market. Microsoft yesterday added its weight to complaints by smaller companies that are currently being considered by the European Commission. In a detailed blog post, the software giant’s legal chief Brad Smith accused Google of a series of anti-competitive actions. [Telegraph]
