RIM CEO Gets Asked About Giving Data To Middle Eastern Governments, Ends Interview

Classy. Mike Lazaridis, CEO of the Canadian firm behind Blackberry, was interviewed by the BBC yesterday; when asked about the problems they’d had with Indian and Middle East governments, who’d demanded greater access to the security system used by Blackberry, Lazaridis said the question was unfair and walked out on the interview.
The question, of course, in reference to threats made in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, among other Arab League states, to block access to the Blackberry network in their countries if they weren’t allowed to monitor the system more closely; these threats vanished very quickly, and Blackberry continues to work in these states. The implication here is that RIM may have compromised on security for greater coverage – which Lazaridis does little to dispel. Bravo.
