South Korean prostitutes in underwear and covered in body paint douse themselves with flammable liquid.
Pimps and prostitutes alike, from Seoul’s red-light district, are furious with the police. So much so that they’ve now started stocking their brothels with flammable liquid and gas containers. They say they are willing to set themselves on fire if things don’t change. This is in response to “increased patrols, police cars parking visibly in the area and plainclothes officers watching them with binoculars.”
About 259 000 people, 70% of them male customers, have been arrested since new prostitution laws took effect in 2004. Nearly 4 000 prostitutes have left their brothels, while 1 800 remain, and seven of the country’s 35 major red-light districts have disappeared, according to police records.

Jang Se-hee, a lady of the night, explains why this is seriously killing her vibe:
“Thousands of prostitutes have been forced out of business, and we believe it is because of the unprecedented campaign of police harassment. We are the people who eat, sleep and live here. Where can we move? My own income has dropped from R61 000 a month to only R24 000 per month!“
Her pimp, a 47-year-old named Sohn, adds:
“We can turn on the gas and light the flames. We know that we don’t have much chance of winning … but we’re ready to die fighting.”
