Andrew Castle
When Andrew Castle from the UK’s wife told him that she wanted a divorce after 18 years of marriage, he did not take too kindly to it. After devising a home-made electric chair in his garage, he casually invited her to sit down in it “for a chat”. He then tried to hit her over the head, in a plan to knock her unconscious before connecting her metal armchair to the house’s main electricity board.
But poor Margaret, the wife, got up out of the seat and a violent struggle ensued. Andrew landed several blows on his wife’s head with a rubber cosh before she escaped through a side door. The fight then carried on outside their house before a passer-by intervened and called police.
Andrew, bless his crazy heart, immediately ran to his backyard and tried to slit his wrists, but the authorities caught up with him before he could finish.
Officers examined the garage to find a length of electric cable, running from a 13 amp plug, with one end via a lamp which had an electric light bulb in it, to the bare and exposed cable ends of the cable. When switched on at the plug, the live and neutral wires, if touched together, or to the chair, would have completed a circuit.
This week Andrew admitted to attempted murder and was jailed for ten years.
