Workers unable to contain their excitement upon learning that we are now the Strike Capital of the World.
Nice one, guys! South Africa has the highest rate of strikes in the world, a labour analyst said yesterday. We’ve had 1 000 working days per 1 000 workers lost in 2010 – and it is expected to be even worse at the end of this year.
This is partly due to the prolonged public sector strike. So far this year we’ve had strikes in the fuel, cleaning and coal mining sectors and a municipal on is on the way as we speak. Labour analyst Gavin Brown reckons the number of working days which could be lost due to work stoppages could rise by more than 20 % at the end of this year.
He said that this is placing strain on the economy and that it is “highly unusual” to see this level of strike action.
