Akio Toyoda, Toyota’s president, described the freshly-unveiled Fun-Vii as “a smartphone on four-wheels,” which sounds like something you would say to describe a car with lots of gadgets. Except Toyota’s new concept car, unveiled ahead of the Tokyo Auto show is like a smartphone on four wheels because it has giant touchscreen doors.
The Fun-Vii has no clear release date, beyond 20XX, and no set price-tag either – which is understandable, because of the sheer insane expense of a car with back-lit touchscreen pads for car doors. It’s sort of in the same league as the gold-studded iPad.
The concept is crazy sexy and nice, though – the idea being that folk would use the car like a personal computer on wheels, which would allow drivers to connect with dealers and whoever else with a tap of a touch-panel door.
Also on display were Toyota’s electric vehicle, FT-EV III, designed for trips within a 105km radius, and a fuel-cell concept vehicle, FCV-R, with a tentative 2015 release.
Incidentally, Ford isn’t even showing up to this year’s Tokyo Auto Show.
