A highly embarrassed Dutch architectural firm has had to apologise for its design of twin skyscrapers in central Seoul, South Korea, because they look pretty much like freeze frames of New York’s late World Trade Center, as both towers exploded. The design for the luxury apartment buildings has enraged families of the victims of the September 11 attacks.
The design for the luxury apartment buildings was brought into the public eye late last week as US media launched scathing attacks on the architectural firm, MVRDV.
The design doesn’t leave much to the imagination, but the area that juts out in a similar manner to the exploding twin towers, was the area in which pools, restaurants, cafes and a gym were meant to be accommodated.
US media reported that relatives of the victims of the attacks, and those that survived the attacks, said that the firm had no respect for those that died, and that the design was some kind of cheap publicity stunt.
The MVRDV posted the following on their Facebook page:
We sincerely apologise to anyone whose feelings we have hurt. It was not our intention. A real media storm has started and we receive threatening emails and calls of angry people calling us al Qaeda lovers or worse.
The Cloud project was designed based on parameters such as sunlight, outside spaces, living quality for inhabitants and the city.
The firm however didn’t state whether it would be altering the design at all, and it was expected that a final call on the project would be made by March next year.
