Irish low-cost airline, Ryanair knows that sex sells. That’s why they ran an ad campaign last year which showed scantily-clad models in lingerie with the strap line “Red Hot Fares & Crew.” But the advert has been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), after staff members from Ryanair complained. They say it portrays cabin crew as glamour models and that they subsequently feel objectified.
One flight attendant in particular was very upset. Only known as Ghada, she started an online petition which attracted thousands of signatures. Seventeen complainants also lodged grievances with the ASA, which concluded the campaign was likely to cause “widespread offence.”
“I’m a member of cabin crew. I love my job and take it seriously, so I was disgusted to see this Ryanair ad which basically portrays cabin crew as glamour models. My work colleagues, many of whom are male, work hard with me to ensure the safety of our passengers. Safety is our number-one priority, not the brand of our underwear.”
