The Nazis Have Landed: Is It Too Soon For A Film Like Iron Sky? [VIDEO]

Iron Sky, a long-awaited science fiction spoof about Nazis invading Earth from their secret moon base is about to be released in Europe and internationally. While it has gained much support online and even some plaudits at festivals, some critics are wondering if Germans are ready for such rampant fun to be made of one of the darkest periods of their recent history.

Er… quite.

One film trailer that has been doing the rounds for a while is Iron Sky, a German sci-fi spoof about a Nazi invasion on Earth from the moon. Yes, you read that correctly. The film has been in development since about 2006, and aims to be released before June this year. But some critics are wondering whether Germans are going to appreciate such a satricial handling of what remains a sensitive topic.

Here’s the trailer:

Basically, it’s a Finnish-German-Austrian production about a group of Nazi refugees who escaped the end of World War 2 by fleeing to the moon. 80 years later, after they are accidentally discovered by an American moon mission, they stage an invasion of earth, and movie madness ensues.

While the film has garnered great reviews during its various festival appearances, even appearing at the Berlin Film Festival last year, some distributors are hesitant to pick it up.

Lutz Göllner, media editor at Berlin’s Zitty listings magazine, told reporters: “Even 66 years after the end of the war, I’m afraid you still can’t make jokes about Nazis in Germany”.

Part of the film’s budget was crowd-sourced, where producers sold shares in the film to investors in order to supplement the budget. The film is due for release in Germany on April 4, with an international release to follow.
