I’ve heard of the saying, “don’t take a knife to a gunfight”, but taking a gun to your graduation ceremony is just plain ridiculous. A female student at the University of Pretoria was wounded yesterday when she sat down, only to have a gun go off inside her graduation gown. The incident happened on the Hatfield campus.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks said the woman, in her mid 20s, was stabilised at the scene and taken to a nearby hospital. A spokesperson for Tuks, Sanku Tsunke, said the shooting seemed to have been an accident, adding that it had happened near the student centre. He said the gun, “which was in the woman’s possession, accidentally discharged, wounding her in the stomach.”

The matter was being investigated by Brooklyn police.
