Yesterday was Memorial Day in USA, celebrated on the last Monday of every May. This is a great time for politicians to make some noise, including John McCain. His sentiments weren’t exactly echoed by some members of his audience – resulting in a reaction that may have been the biggest display of cojones in his career.
The US holiday is traditionally used for remembering those that have served in the US Armed Forces, but has also become a platform for politicians to make public appearances. Republican senator John McCain took the opportunity to speak outside the Veteran’s Museum and Memorial in San Diego, alongside republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

The heckler who began hurling abuse at McCain was soon grabbed by security and escorted away to cheers and jeers from the crowd of 5 000 veterans present.
Before continuing his speech, McCain seized the moment to hurl an insult back, shouting: “Jerk!’. This was followed by a priceless look of achievement.
McCain is a war veteran himself, and spent five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.
