Earlier today, the Western Cape High Court dismissed an application from the The Residents’ Association of Hout Bay and the Habitat Council to interdict construction of the proposed R54 million Chapman’s Peak building.

The plaintiffs held that Premier Helen Zille and transport MEC Robin Carlisle had not obtained the required environmental authorisation, as stipulated in Protected Areas Act.

Marie Roux, of the Habitat Council:

This wonderful heritage site should not be spoiled by a building that is not for the purpose of conservation.

However, both Zille and Carlisle contend that previous environmental legislation granted them authorisation, and construction of the office space will go ahead.

The construction was initially intended to be completed by July of next year but the disruptions could push it back to as far as July 2014.
