Right now, you could be using the new Internet, and you probably didn’t know. Essentially, the Internet got too small, and we’d have run out of addresses if they didn’t do something about it. But, we’ll let Vint Cerf, Google’s Chief Internet Evangelist, guide us through the jargon.
Google says:
When the Internet launched operationally in 1983, no one ever dreamed that there might be billions of devices and users trying to get online. But like a telephone network that is running out of phone numbers, the current Internet is running out of IP addresses, and if we don’t roll out Internet Protocol v6 (IPv6), we won’t have the room we need to grow and the Internet would become tangled, unsafe and unsustainable.
Vint says of the new Internet: “Today we launch the 21st century Internet: you ain’t seen nothin’ yet.”
Google also says that: “complete transition will take time. Some users may need to upgrade their home routers or possibly download updated operating system software to enable IPv6 in parallel with IPv4.”
But here, listen to Vint:
As usual, South Africa is a little bit behind when it comes to these things, and Telkom has not officially announced when they will be rolling out IPv6. However, you can check if you’re ready for IPv6 HERE.
