Apple Maps is in hot water yet again, this time not because some poor guy tried to get to Constantia and ended up in Turkey, but rather for revealing sensitive military information. Taiwanese authorities have asked Apple to take Google’s lead, and rather post low-res pics of sensitive places.

The area in question is Taiwan’s new $1,4 billion early warning radar station, a military facility capable of picking up missiles fired at the country from as far away as western China. While a spokesperson for the Taiwanese military has conceded that they could have taken better measures in camouflaging the facility, he has also requested that the pictures be blurred in the interests of protecting the country’s military assets.

The reaction came after a local newspaper printed pictures showing the base, identifying it as a “top-secret long-range radar base” in Hsinchu. A formal submission is yet to be made to Apple, but it will ask for lower resolution pictures to be used to protect the sensitive nature of the information. It is believed that the satellite image was taken roughly a year ago.

The base is not yet active, but the 10 storey facility is expected to go online later this year. It uses US early-warning technology, and local sources state that the radar installation can monitor targets, determine their speeds and fire missiles to intercept them.

Apple has not yet commented on the matter.
