Last week, marijuana legalisation bills were successfully passed in both Colorado and Washington. Awareness surrounding the growth, distribution and consumption of weed is growing by the day and it is expected that more states will soon follow.
H. Lee (a pseudonym) is a photographer who has spent an entire harvest year on marijuana farms around California’s Humboldt, Mendocino and Sonoma counties. The below images are part of her Grassland exhibition, and documents the harvest 2010 to harvest 2011 season.
The photos themselves show sleepy farms that look like any other small crop producers, but are notable for the relatively rare access granted to take them. Growers don’t tend to allow themselves or their operations to be photographed in large-circulation photos. No faces or personal details are visible, but Lee says she tried to be as honest as possible about what it felt like to be there around the growers.
What I tried to do was capture the dark and the light. It can be a dark place; people have guns. It’s not scary but it is a very cautious community.
