At least two Zambian football team players were injured last night after their game against Bafana Bafana at the FNB Stadium in Soweto when Bafana Bafana supporters stoned the team bus after the match.
Bafana Bafana were beaten 1-0 by their Zambian counterparts, and reigning African champions in the Nelson Mandela Challenge last night.
From post match reports, it seems that Bafana Bafana were outclassed, but it’s not clear what led to the violence.
The Football Association of Zambia said late last night:
Safa president Kirsten Nematanani has apologised to his Zambian counterpart Kalusha Bwalya and entire Football Association of Zambia for the attack on the African champion team bus.
Kennedy Mweene and Felix Katongo suffered injuries as the Zambian bus was hit by huge rocks which shattered the windows. The bus was attacked as the team left the FNB stadium for the hotel. Our photo shows Nematandi [back to camera in the picture above] checking Mweene’s injury after he received treatment on the bus from the Zambian squad medical staff.
All over the world, football has been marred by violence of late, and this seems to be just the latest incident in which the sport’s name has been dragged through the gutter.
