Earlier this year, Debbie Calitz and her former boyfriend, Bruno Pelizzari, made international headlines after they were released from captivity in Somalia. The pair were held captive, and sold between various pirate gangs, over the course of nearly two years before that.
But on Friday Calitz made news again – this time for all the wrong reasons – after being arrested during a police drugs raid at her home in Pretoria. It is believed that she used her Constantia Park flat to grow dagga and powerfully hallucinogenic magic mushrooms. Six others were also arrested.
According to police, Calitz tried to use her celebrity status to prevent officers from arresting her and her accomplices. A police officer on the scene said she appeared to be extremely proud of herself:
She was throwing her name out like it would mean something to us. She was carrying on as though we would turn around and walk out. When we tried to explain to her why we were arresting her, she told us that we did not know what we were doing. She also kept on saying that she was not hurting anyone or breaking the law.
They will all appear in the Hatfield Community Court today on charges of drug possession.
